Realtek 8188eus(after getting a solution actually rtl8188fu) wifi usb not detected after driver make and install

Posted: Tue Apr 07, 2020 12:33 pm
by Vipul88
I have updated kernel to 5.1.2 from mx package installer stable repo by searching 5.1.2 in it and installing two packages after that.
I have followed instructions mentioned in the github link as follows,
https://github.com/quickreflex/rtl8188eus
The command make and sudo make install works fine,
Lsusb shows realtek semiconductor corp.
Iwconfig after make and make install adds,
usb0 no wireless connection
After which I reboot and iwconfig does not show usb0 anymore
It just shows l0 and eth0
Command I have used
Cd rtl8188eus
Make
Sudo make install
Reboot machine.
All this should work but no detection after this.
Please someone help me.

Please read How To Ask For Help then run MX Tools/Quick System Info and do a right-click paste into a forum reply. (Quick System Info automatically copies the information to your clipboard, already formatted properly for pasting into the forum so all you have to do is a right-click/paste, not a copy/paste.) Thanks.

Installing a driver wouldn't usually cause any issue like that. If it's not the correct one the relevant hardware just wouldn't work.
Did you do anything else? Hard shutdown perhaps?

After installing the driver I rebooted then nothing opened whatever I opened it crashed brave crashed, falkon crashed, so opened terminal and run the uninstall script from GitHub page and reboot. Now whole system is in the state in mentioned before. It freezes now so I have to reboot again. And it's same till now.

Could be a kernel issue. That 4.19.0-6 kernel is outdated and vulnerable anyway. You should install Debian 64 bit (4.19) which at this time is 4.19.0-10, from MX Package Installer, Popular Apps, Kernels category. Then run MX Boot Options and select it as the default, then click Apply and reboot. If that doesn't fix your lockups you have something else wrong with your installation that probably isn't even related to wifi drivers.

Another thing I see: per your Quick System Info your CPU temperature was 54 degrees and the maximum temperature allowed by your CPU before it does a thermal shutdown is 67.4 degrees. However, temperatures reported by inxi aren't necessarily all that accurate. I recommend that you right-click on your panel and install the sensors plugin or change your conky to one that shows CPU temperature and monitor it. It's possible that your browsers combined with whatever websites your loading are causing your CPU temperature to climb too high and that's what's causing the problem. 54 degrees seems rather high for a desktop computer's CPU: mine only gets that hot when it's under a big load.

It's a freezed screen. And that is right after boot ,it freezes there.
It is definitely due to installing and uninstalling drivers please refer GitHub page you will understand what happened due to it.

This what I did earlier right after last command I rebooted and from then on all apps were crashing and then I uninstalled drivers as commands from rtl8188eus GitHub and then it was totally unresponsive and resource hog.

I,too think that the issue shouldn't be related to installing a driver. Also this one is proven to work (not only with MX).

"Maybe" for you have 2 additional repos.. or something else ...

If it was a clean MX install and then you installed the driver this way, I've no doubt it would work flawlessly... (Maybe you try that on a tiny partition, say 8 GB ).

Yep. No matter both are same versions..

Anyway, on Grub you'll see them as "MX 19 blahblah on sdaX" and "MX .. on sdaY"

You can also label their partitions on Gparted, say, the current one as MX and the new one as TEST or so ... that will make things easier in general, to recognize which is which..

I have a test MX running without swap my query is,
Do I need to apt update and upgrade before installing drivers?
And update to kernel 4.19 0-10?

Not a must but would be better. (recommended by me :) )

P.S. You can even install the 5.6 kernel from MXPI .

P.S. In case you decide to remove one of the MXs and let one only, you may need to start MX Boot Repair first and give the Grub's control to the one that will stay. (Or later do it on live-session if you forget doing that).

https://ibb.co/sjd3X1q => https://ibb.co/6W31fCc => https://ibb.co/NVRpYgQ

Also remember that you can take a snapshot with "MX Snapshot" when everything's fine, and have your own iso under your hand somewhere, so you won't need to do them again and again ..

Yes, if you use MX Live USB Maker to write it to the thumbdrive in full-feature mode. I always keep a spare thumbdrive set aside, and redo and reburn the snapshot about once a week. I also back up everything in my home directory including hidden files and folders to an external hard drive. Then if something happens I can reinstall my personalized MX along with the apps I've added, restore all my data, and I'm up and running again with little or no data lost or wasted time reconfiguring MX and reinstalling apps from scratch. What would ordinarily be a disaster becomes a mere annoyance.

In a nutshell: MX Snapshot is one of the best things a pc user can do in his/her life :)

You can either start it as live-session and use "your own distro" from usb, or install it back on "any pc" (with same architecture) back when needed :) (Can be used as a whole system backup)

P.S. In case you can't see an install icon on live-session when you want to install it back, open a terminal and: sudo minstall

Also one can use Rufus on Windows or "dd" or "cp" on any Linux distro terminal to write the iso (other than MX Live USB Maker)...

I have ungergone the disaster scene once in past, I have made a post for it too it was due to dual boot and windows repair wiping my whole drive to blank and me being newbie to MX did not know it's full potential. At last I was able to recover all things I needed but I realised the importance of backing up.

Never connected even once. I assumed it's showing wifi signals so it is working. Checked a day later to connect for the first time and not once got connected.
it is all ticked right. enable networking , wifi, notifications all are ticked right.

While you're at it, select a fixed channel, preferably Channel 1 , rather than "Auto" .. Apply ...

i dont have any bluetooth devices to begin with. still disabled blueman.
i have a router i dont know what to change in 192.168.... but changed mode from b/g/n to b only and tried connecting the hotspot it does not connect. if i change in edit connections the channel and band setings for the desired wifi signal and press save, the rtl8188fu just makes new connection with same name but a number added in suffix. for example
before editing connections wifi signal name shown is marshal, after editing connections and saving , and then i try connecting by going from panel and network then an extra signal with same name but a number added is shown in edit connections and the one i saved earlier is just not used to connect i.e marshal 1.

Hi, folks.
I've got the very same trouble with another old machine I'm installing MX Linux 19.2 (running with kernel 5.4.0-3-amd64); it is meant to connect Internet through WiFi using that USB WiFi dongle, but it doesn't recognize it, probably due to driver missing... I have copied all the content from the CD which comes with the device (surprisingly, it supplies even the driver for Linux, but it comes as .tar.gz file ...!), and it is the same model rtl8188EUS.
Any tip about how to install the driver from that media?
Or, instead, would be easier to download it from GitHub and follow the procedures described herewith above?...

Thanks in advance!

In fact, that was just according to the model name (nothing to lose) but the best is the QSI or at least

Code: Select all

inxi -Nxxx
or lsusb when the device is attached, so that we know the exact chip no and what's needed ...

Also, have you right-clicked on the Network icon on panel? (Check all 3 boxes: "Enable ..." )

Thank you, too. Sadly this shows only wired (ethernet) card. What about lsusb ? (when the device is attached)

Edit: Saw you edited the post above and it's here:

Vendor=0bda ProdID=f179
Driver=rtl8188fu

So, it's exactly the same device with the correct driver. Then, there must be something else.

Oh: If you didn't:

Code: Select all

rfkill unblock all
If not again, enter Bios Settings and check if there's something "disabled" related to "network" ... (Also check if there's a tiny wireless button to switch off/on or the Fn Keys)

That's normal. It gives no output, but silently unblocks if there's something "soft-blocked". It should be fine after reboot :)

Ok, I've plugged the wire to my own Desktop, so I can work and do handle other stuffs; the older desktop (SEMPRON) keeps not connecting through Wifi; however, and quite oddly, I've found out the dongle is working! It finds my Wifi net (and others around), but it fails to connect!! I've checked the usual details about SSID, band (2,4 gHz), security (WPA, WPA2), password... and nothing! The 'connecting' icon just goes round and round, and fails to connect. It fails even with the open Wifi net in the neighborhood...

Just to put a few of "gasoline on the fire": I've found this site referring to rtl8188EU wireless adapters; They have being problematic to work properly in Linux, indeed...

So, the driver is loaded and the device's working.

I'd say this from the beginning: From Menu : Session and Startup => Autostart Apps: uncheck Bluetooth (Blueman) (so that it won't conflict with the wi-fi) https://docs.xfce.org/_media/xfce/xfce4 ... ostart.png

P.S. The names are similar but that one is another model with a different chip number. We also solved that several times in the forum :)

You can also:

Code: Select all

echo "blacklist rtl8xxxu" | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8xxxu.conf
Reboot.

Yes but those (links) are what you already did :)

Your device began working. Just there's something else that prevents you connect to an Access Point.

This one is "so fine"

Code: Select all

pedro_lucas@bento:~
$ inxi -Nxxx
Network: Device-1: NVIDIA MCP61 Ethernet vendor: Micro-Star MSI type: network bridge
driver: forcedeth v: kernel port: ee00 bus ID: 00:07.0 chip ID: 10de:03ef
Device-2: Realtek type: USB driver: rtl8188fu bus ID: 1-2:2 chip ID: 0bda:f179
and from now on you don't need to search what to install etc. (It's just a connection issue now but not driver .. )

P.S. If you'd turned off the internal wi-fi device: turn it on, too .

Yeah, the dongle is "alive", and finding all available Wi-fi nets, but still with some unknown issue impeaching connection..
Wifi_demesg & lsmod results.jpeg
P.S.: I tried to delete the "Wifi connection profile" I had settled before with SSID & password of my net and, when I tried to select it again form the list of available nets the dongle is "seeing", then I received the password request!
But again, it was unsuccessful on connecting... dmesg returned practically the same results after...

If the "circles" as if "being connected" are still there, you can try a different kernel: Say, 5.6 (I'm also on currently) from MX Package Installer (You'll see in the first tab (Popular Apps): "Kernels")

Also enter Router Settings and try these:
  • Change 802.11 mode from "mixed" (or b/g/n) to b/g or g only (discard the n as some devices have problems with that)
  • Change the channel from "Auto" to a fixed one, preferably Channel 1
  • Change Security from WPA/WPA2 to WPA2
Reboot

I'll plug th wire into the machine again and install the package firmware-realtek, and see what happens...

HI, I've just made it as per your suggestion: I did the kernel upgrade to Debian 5.6 (more specifically, 5.6.0-2-amd64), but it didn't work...
I prefer not to mess with Router (modem) settings. It could bring other issues to connection of my other devices (and also, the Wifi troubled machine isn't meant to be used here, but rather another house, within a different Wifi network)
I decided to give a try to a Windows driver; MX Network assistant is easy to use, and installing of "ndiswrapper" was smoothly (wire connected, of course). But the App failed to apply a driver from the files within the CD which accompanies the dongle (I copied all its content to the HDD); although it supplies drives to all versions of Windows (from Xp to Win 10, both 32 and 64bit versions), the App failed on reading the *.inf files with installing instructions... I've got stuck, again..!

The last thing I can say (for sure):
  • You're getting tired for nothing: Yours is not a driver issue from the minute you installed the fu driver and the device began working.
  • Linux drivers are always better when available.
  • Ndis was designed to work according to XP (drivers).
  • You need to use either Linux drivers or Ndis. In case you'd like to turn back (that I recommend) remove Ndis via MX Network Assistant.
In case the modem is ZyXel: In my case I needed to add 0x as a prefix to the password (when typing to connect) exactly as displayed on modem settings . Say, when I typed password it wouldn't accept that but only 0xpassword. But that was only for wep encryption.

oh, I would love to get "tired for nothing' all the times I get troubles with malfunction of devices over Linux !! ::)
I put Ndis as "blocked', but I can simply uninstall it through the same Network assistant; that's the easy part..
The dongle is identified as "LV-UW06', and the maker is "BGN' (a generic name for more one "made in China' cheap accessory...), there is no more information available on the case of the product, neither on the mini-CD which comes with it (the one for drivers installation, a thing that usually isn't necessary when using it with Windows, where this cheap pieces of c***p work out-of-the-box!)...
I can try that "0x" before the password; something has to work, eventually! Or, instead, I'll have to buy another Wifi dongle, but some based on another chipset than Realtek...

Thanks for all assistance, pal! I shall talk with you later about other "projects", like using "runit" as init system in my own machine (does it make it more fast and responsive?), and about other issues I couldn't yet solve satisfactorily (I'm struggling with " no sound through HDMI " since I started to use MX Linux -- but that's another story!!

Yes, requires a new thread :)

P.S. Remembered one more thing: Disable "Secure Boot" in Bios (if there's such an option of course).

Hi, I'm passing here for a last time just to report; I've got back another Wifi dongle I had lent to a friend, and made a test. It worked "out of the box" ! I'm not sure about which chipset it uses (probably Ralink), but the system immediately identified it and installed the due drivers (rt73usb, rt2x00usb, and rt2x00lib; and the system pulled ''ndiswrapper" again without my intervention (?), although it seems be using Linux drivers only...)
Well, what matters is Wifi is working now, without "shenanigans"..
My conclusion: Realtek "sucks"! Even with the correct driver(?), Realtek chipsets do have intricacies which make them not feasible to use (with Linux). Given that Wifi adapters are cheap, there's no reason to spend time trying to make a troubled one work... Better get another already proved!
I thank you , Huckleberry Finn, for all your interest and kind assistance!! Surely, We'll still chat a lot about how to make MX Linux gives all we deserve!!
Regards!

I have RTL8723DE wifi, for which I do need extra drivers on MX Linux but installing them was a piece of cake and it works fine. So it's foremost the FU variant which seems problematic...

Good to know, tony! It's one option more for those who needs it! But anyone who decides to use Linux must be aware that not all devices available in the market will work out of the box...!

Vipul88, here are the specifications of the Wifi dongle which works out of the box:

Code: Select all

pedro_lucas@bento:~
$ inxi -Nxxx
Network: Device-1: NVIDIA MCP61 Ethernet vendor: Micro-Star MSI type: network bridge
driver: forcedeth v: kernel port: ee00 bus ID: 00:07.0 chip ID: 10de:03ef

Good luck, and regards!

Thanks. Ralink works on linux drivers so ndiswrapper is unnecessary. Anyways this will help people better understand about what really is the solution in these scenarios.
To conclude rtl8188eus aka rtl8188fu is having problem which are beyond us to solve. So stay away from them if you're using linux.

i had the same problem on antix linux
it got solved here is the summary

SUMMARY

Problem: My USB WiFi adapter was not getting recognized by antiX 19.3, therefore I was not able to connect to WiFi

-> I was asked to execute this in terminal ~ inxi -Fxxxz ,for getting all information about of my system to check if the drivers are already available in antiX or if I have to update the kernel or install specific firmware.

-> I was asked to execute this in terminal ~ lsusb , for checking what chip set is present in my WiFi adapter
After executing this was one of the output
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 0bda:f179 Realtek Semiconductor Corp.
therefore It ended up being a realtek rtl8188fu.

-> Many have had problems with it and someone created a .deb installer for both the firmware and kernel driver, but I need at least kernel 4.19.XXX
Xecure checked in antiX 19.3 and the firmware is NOT included. To get it to work, I would have to install antiX on the System (if not done), update the kernel and test if the wifi USB adapter works out of the box. If it doesn’t, I can get the .deb installer from https://github.com/kelebek333/rtl8188fu

Copying and running the commands one at a time from the first gitlab link should be enough to install both the driver and firmware.

Then I can follow the other optional instructions to disable some features, as recommended. The set of instructions for disabling MAC Address Spoofing is only relevant for Network Manager (not used by default in antiX, which uses connman).

-> I did exactly as stated above
1. updated the kernel
(I needed to connect though Ethernet or using your phone (connected with USB), to install the 4.19 kernel, run Package Installer (white icon in the panel), search for kernel, and install the kernel-antix one that in the description mentions LTS (4.19.XXX).)
2. copied and ran the commands one at a time from the first git lab link.(https://github.com/kelebek333/rtl8188fu
3.then all problems solved I went to connman and I could see WiFi option now (for more clarity read the article by Xecure https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic ... ntix-19-2/ and watch the video)

hope this migth help MX users to come to a proper solution

Section 3.4.2 of the manual has detailed troubleshooting steps for solving that very problem.

Thanks. Jaym sar, will check out, don't have the wifi dongle though, the new one is sufficient for me. But will check it when I can.

I got the old system back git the 5.8 antix kernel on it after a full upgrade to 19.4 and with rtl8188fu usb the wifi network were visible but could not connect if I were to remove the rtl8188fu usb and connect the ralink one it connected and worked fine.
I refered the 3.4.2 section but can't seem to get a concrete path later
