Hello,

I have this small machine, 15GB, which I can't find a system to install because of its small capacity, someone recommended me to try with antiX, but I don't see how to download Xfce4 the desktop I need, I can't fine nothing about it on this site:

http://antixlinux.com/download/

I installed MXlinux but it is too big, just after the first update, without install apps ...:

You want small, you can get antiX with fluxbox, icewm, and a few others.

I doubt @anticapitalista is going to make an Xfce antiX. So.. you will have to fiddle with that on your own to see if you can make that happen.

if its available, its in antiX's package manager or in the packeinstaller application. antiX does not prebuild an xfce version.

no matter what you a run, 16gb isn't a lot. might be better off getting a big sd card and running off of that rather than the internal storage.

although even with that mx system, you've got almost 5gb free, and that includes a 2gb swapfile on partition. you've got room for quite a bit, if you avoid flatpaks anyway.

You could try, to install onto the internal drive, like you would install onto an USB-stick.
So to say an internal IiveUSB.

There was that thread from just three days ago where someone was asking for a KDE antiX install and anticapitalista said they only do window managers.

There is the MX Linux 23.1 Minimal Xfce respin by dolphin_oracle.

When installed and updated, the / has 6.6 GB usage. That is with the Virtual Box extensions, Firefox (207 mb), Bluetooth admin applet & 2 Bluetooth utilities (8,634 KB).

You might want to see if you can upgrade that Kingston SATA III SSD M.2 16GB drive.

Without Xfce4, I'm disabled, handicap ...

I had no other choice but to continue dealing with MXLinux, with which, after installing the most basic things I need, and removing, as far as I know, some things ... and cleaning the system, now it looks like this:

Code: Select all

keos@mx:~
$ df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
udev 1.8G 0 1.8G 0% /dev

tmpfs 380M 12K 380M 1% /run/user/1000
keos@mx:~
$
Maybe I will be able to continue bringing out some more things ... :alien:

Oh, that would be ideal, but I do not know neither the card selection nor the procedure ... I would not know how to do in order to install the system ...

For example, for this little machine, I ask you, could this be the card to use?:

If your insistent on using a drive that only has 16GB and want the XFCE desktop as an installation medium
you can look into openSUSE Tumbleweed XFCE. 4GB after install and updates.
* direct link was removed

Otherwise XFCE can be installed in antiX as I showed in post #9.

I have several distros that I have installed on 16GB M2 SSD drives....

Likely Void XFCE would suit your needs, takes just under 3GB disk space.

It'll work just fine. I formatted mine as ext 4 file system. You can use ext 2 . Might have to run a live gparted session though to run a check on file system from time to time as ext 2 though.

On the MX installer. Is there not a drop down menu for like /home, / , esp? All I did was click and point.
Grub went on esp partition on my install.

On Distrowatch it says:
...rolling-release development model with daily updates ...
Does that mean I'll never have to upgrade to a higher version?

If you don't mind the word 'stability' dropped out of the description!

Ask any Arch Linux user how often they have to do post-update repairs. Stability is why many choose MX Linux.

Linux Jargon Buster: What is a Rolling Release Distribution?
Rolling release is a model in which updates to a software are continuously rolled out, rather than in batches of versions.

The rolling release also comes at the cost of testing. You may have surprises when the latest update starts creating problem for your system.

I think it would be best to spend a little more $ and...

https://www.androidcentral.com/how-upgr ... chromebook

Well, I've tried other distros like Manjaro, Antergos in the past, I think it's called Endeavouros today, something like that, and I've seen that discounting the times I've broken them -- most of the time -- there have been moments when without doing absolutely anything those systems have 'sort of self-destructed' themselves, and that's why I've stayed with MX, until today...

But it seems that things have been changing a bit lately and there are distros like openSUSE Leap that claim to be very stable, in fact I'm trying it out.

openSUSE Leap XFCE comes in at 8.3GB.

It's worth noting

Code: Select all

MX-23.3 XFCE= 11GB
antiX-23.1 XFCE= 8.5GB
Debian 12.6 XFCE= 9.7GB

Back to post #9

How do you manage to install Xfce4? I assume you are having two desktops, one of those offered by the system by default + Xfce4, installed by you... isn't that right?.

@keos Yes. I booted up to the IceWM desktop and opened Package Installer.
Then I went to the Enabled tab and searched for xfce and selected the meta-package.
(I think the one offered under popular was the base install)

I'm always looking for different ways to answer the main question here ... xfce4-panel is my idea of a killer app ... and I found this elsewhere in the forum (or a forum):

https://sleeperos.sourceforge.io

The basic functionality is there but I haven't done much with it yet.

Downloading raw Antix and drawing in Xfce via the Package Manager--particularly the no-polkit version--has not brought me a lot of joy, personally and for what little it's worth.

It's not turnkey like the Manyroads version once was. It feels, let's say, untested and pretty unloved.

Which I guess it is. ; )
