Please update Chrome. I received a message in Chrome that the current version of Chrome that I have is out of date. I have Version 122.0.6261.94 (Official Build) (64-bit). According to the MX updater there are no updates. According to Google version 124.0.6367.78 is the latest stable version for Linux.

We do not package chrome at all. We install from the Google repository
Perhaps the repository has had some change. Will check on my system tonight

In the meantime I just installed the Flatpak version because I needed to pay my bills online. I usually wouldn't use Chrome but because of the blithering idiot CEO of my bank requires that I have third party cookies enabled because of their gross incompetence. I only use Chrome to go to my bank and no other sites due to security concerns.

your repo definition looks correct. not sure why its not updating.
maybe
Code: Select all
sudo apt update
apt policy google-chrome
and
output will provide some info.

After this command I get this.
Code: Select all
Mauser@mx:~

NOTE: This is only a simulation!
apt needs root privileges for real execution.
Keep also in mind that locking is deactivated,
so don't depend on the relevance to the real current situation!

I never feel comfortable using the command line because of very bad past experiences with it. Twice I ended up completely destroying the installation which required complete reformat and re-install of the O.S. Many other bad experiences as well. I hope I did this right.

When was the last time your machine prompted you to fetch a new update? From the looks of it you may have problems with /tmp having odd permissions or maybe have something else mounted there, and it may have been that way for some time.
Can you browse to /tmp in Thunar and create a new file there, or does it give you an error message when you try it?

I don't recall but when checking the history it says 2024-03-21 18:00:55 which doesn't make any sense because I received updates a few days ago.
I can create a file and it gives me no error.
I did have a lot of trouble a while ago with empty ghost files being created on my desktop when sending E-mails that involved bad file permissions. Then I was advised here after everything was working fine to run some kind of command for a reason which I don't recall why that broke MX Linux that it would on boot up as root and wouldn't boot anymore under my user name. I reverted back to the previous file permissions and then my computer started working fine again.

When was the last time your machine prompted you to fetch a new update?
Can you browse to /tmp in Thunar and create a new file there, or does it give you an error message when you try it?
I don't recall but when checking the history it says 2024-03-21 18:00:55 upgrade.
I can create a file and it gives me no error.
OK, a month isn't too bad. I'm pretty sure that Chrome didn't skip v123, so I was wondering if maybe you haven't been able to upgrade packages for much longer.
I did have a lot of trouble a while ago with empty ghost files being created on my desktop when sending E-mails that involved bad file permissions. Then I was advised here to run some kind of command for a reason which I don't recall why that broke MX Linux that it would on boot up as root and wouldn't boot anymore under my user name. I reverted back to the previous file permissions and then my computer started working fine again.
When you run a command with "sudo", it runs with superuser privileges. Thus it doesn't make sense that you can create files in /tmp but the system superuser account cannot. Likewise for things that prompt for a password before they can run, like Synaptic.
/tmp should have mode 1777. In Thunar you ought to be able to find the /tmp directory, right-click it, choose Properties from the context menu, and go to the Permissions tab. It should say Owner: root (root), Group: root, and the permissions for Owner, Group, and Others should be "Read & Write" for each of them.
If that's not the case, try this:
It will list the mode and permissions for / and only print the line for /tmp.

I don't know what mode 1777 is.
tmp says: Owner: root(root) Access: Read&Write
Group: Mauser Access: Read&Write
Others Access: Read
It won't let me change the file permissions because it refuses to let me open the File System as root because there is no such option.
As for your command it says this:
Code: Select all
Mauser@mx:~
$ $ ls -l / | grep tmp
$: command not found

Before when I still had a problem I didn't see any check at that time when the title said Solved even though I didn't mark it Solved at that time. I have since fixed the problem with my computer which is why I now put a check on #16 to mark it as solved. Something weird happen on the forum that caused that problem.

I notice that your main repository is the R.I.T. mirror. I've had similar problems to what you have reported here in the past when using that mirror, so I suggest that you switch to the Salt Lake City mirror instead.

I'm a little surprised that there's no option for "Open root Thunar here" when you right-click on something in Thunar: empty space in the display panel, or on one of the directories in the sidebar. I suspect that the "Others: Read" access may have been causing problems. Even though "sudo" runs commands as the system superuser, the superuser can invoke programs as other accounts. I have an "_apt" user account in /etc/passwd and, I'm just spitballing here, I bet apt, dpkg, and Synaptic use that account to run package management actions, like, for instance, creating temporary files in /tmp to validate signing keys when checking for updates.

MX Repo Manager has an option to choose the fastest mirror from among a list of repos. I'm not sure there's an easy way to disable any of the repos on that list. The best thing I've found if you want to block any specific mirror, even if it could end up being the fastest option in MX Repo Manager, is to manually edit
/usr/share/mx-repo-list/repos.txt.

In this case, reliability is a more important factor than speed. When a user first installs MX, the main repository is selected automatically by geographical proximity; IE the closer a user is to a mirror, the faster, in theory, his / her connection should be, but this doesn't take into account the actual number of hops it takes for a request to make the return trip (user --> repository --> user). It also doesn't consider whether mirrors located at universities and colleges see their reliability suffer in the interval between one term ending and a new one beginning , and a myriad of other human and physical factors. If the OP does switch his main repo to SLC, he might experience an imperceptible speed loss, but that would be compensated by his not having to repeat actions when an update is not available in a timely fashion or the requested package isn't available yet.

switching repo will do nothing for the google-chrome issue that started this thread. lets keep on target here please. the issue is not the repo, its local. Mauser has chosen not to share what he did to fix the issue, so this issue is done.

It does actually, Both @Eadwine Rose and I got the updated version of Chrome prior to the OP posting his issue. The most logical answer for this anomaly is that the OP's main repo is out of sync.
