Be sure to include the quick-system-info with your report.

If posting nvidia-installer (ddm-mx) issues, please post the contents of /var/log/ddm.log.
If posting remaster issues, please include the contents of /var/log/live/live-remaster.log
If posting installer issues, please include the contents of /var/log/minstall.log
If posting issues with MX-PackageInstaller “Popular Apps”, please post contents of /var/log/mxpi.log or /var/log/mxpi.log.old (whichever contains the log of your issue).

By the way, the gui for quick-system-info now has a pretty nice log viewer function.

Hi, @dolphin_oracle,
thanks to the team for the hard work.

First try: went very nice.
It was on a setup with two separate BTRFS partitions, each on LUKS. Each partition contains one subvolume (@, @home). LUKS containers were created by mx-install.
Seems working, except Timeshift seems forced to use another (dm-1) partition, it is weird though, because in log it sees dm-0 device, where the root is.

Later I will try the same, but with only one partition with two subvolumes on it.

Thank you in advance.
Andy

Please share QSI as intended in the software, not as attachment, thanks :)

I have thought in QSI the button "save information selected... to an archive file" is intended exactly for that purpose, as QSI info is all there.
minstall.log and other logs I have attached are important as well, are they?

the subsequent installs will be on the same HW.

This install was just like previous one, with the exception, the root and home subvolume were on the same BTRFS filesystem.
edit: just forget to write the result: install fine, Timeshift still insisting that root partition is the other one, not chosen to use in this install.
Will try to delete it.

its OK for an attachment, but it is easier to have the info directly in the post. that doesn't work for some log files though.

Installs fine on HP desktop, intel 4th gen in EFI mode, with windows detected and present on grub menu on reboot. Looks real fine, thanks for the hard work.

some small remarks:
  • installer did not pick *any* ESP partition by itself, is this as intended ?
  • grub background is still MX21's, is this as intended ?
  • i think a default menu shortcut to "system settings" would be useful ("add to favourites", can't remember if i added it myself in MX21)

Third install: recycled both LUKS containers created from previous install. (FS Formatted during install).
This feature - ability to use precreated LUKS containers is very important.
Thank you.

Otherwise, no other things tested (yet).

Timeshift still not recognizes root, I will wait patiently for making Timeshift snapshots working.

Andy

Hello,
first serious problem:
Yesterday I have installed 6.3 kernel, turned my laptop off. Today I have booted it at morning, do some light browsing, then close the lid, move it to another place, opened the lid and the laptop is frozen.
Blackscreen (no backlight), numlock stuck.
I have to do forced restart. Which logs do you want?
(I have encountered similair behaviour in RC2, default kernel, after the same treatment, always.)

Edit: restarted, attached logs.

Both in RC2 and now in RC3, the icons of all the folders are not shown correctly, only those of the personal folder correspond to the theme, I attach 2 images, one of how they are seen in MX 21.3 KDE and another of how they are shown in MX 23 RC- KDE.

Installed RC3 on all new hardware last night without issue. I noticed vs RC2 this version of the installer is a bit more polished. QSI below if you're interested.

A few issues I have noticed with RC2 that I am continuing to investigate w/RC3:

The logout screen looks "squished". Less so than it was RC2 (from memory) but still a bit off. I'm using 16x10 monitors wich might contribute.

I cannot get on board SPDIF audio to work (analog outs work fine). I assume at this time my MB is just too new. Oddly SPDIF shows as an option in all the audio GUIs but it doesn't show in alsamixer. One noticeable difference with the on board audio is it is connected via USB instead of PCIe, which seems like an unusual architecture choice. Audio from the on board AMD GPU is working fine though.
EDIT: This is a known issue with the audio chipset, realtek ALC4080. It seems it is problematic even on Windows. As best I can tell, even though it's been out for a couple years now there is not a standard way to address all it's features. There are several open issues currently at https://github.com/alsa-project/alsa-ucm-conf/issues.

I can't get a custom color theme to "stick". Normally I use the Breeze Dark theme but change the color of window title bars to make the active window stand out in a sea of other grey windows. If I make the change and save it, pick the modified theme nothing happens. This is a plasma issue with a workaround available, but untried by me as of yet.

It works if you start with systemd. It looks like Plasma developers are all into systemd, both Firewall and System Monitor work fine if you boot with systemd.

That's not something we (or at least I) can fix.

MX is acting weird on my laptop (logs from install in posts above.)
Firefox and the whole desktop environment become frozen. I switched with ALT+F1 to console, did login and run HTOP, killed FF. I had to kill kwin, too.
(laptop did run fine many months with MX21, even with Windows, but I added another, used SSD, on about 50% TBW lifetime, prior playing with MX23)
So, to rule out potential HW causes, I decided to mess with my main PC.

In this main PC I have added another two NVME SSDs there about a month ago, to be able to not touch the SSD with "production" MX21 later - it resides (currently) on nvme0n1 (the numbering was shifted after the add, because I have swapped SSDs between the sockets 1 and 2. Third SSD is attached via PCI-E x4 adapter.)
On one of them is already new installation of Windows 10, running well. (some gaming). (nvme0n1 currently, in the socket 1)
The third, nvme2n1 is still virgin.

And here my woes begin:
RC3 KDE did install, but apparently there is problem with GRUB or efivars. (no entry was added).
I even wasn't able to trigger boot with rescue menu of live medium (maybe because of Ventoy - I will supply the error later here:)
I made bootable USB with MX-LiveUSB, booted:
Boot Rescue Menus -> GRUB-EFI bootloader ->

Code: Select all

mx @[fat] (hd4,1)/EFI/mx/grubx64.efi
boot @[fat] (hd4,1)/EFI/boot/bootx64.efi
boot @[ext_] (hd4,7)/grub/x86_64-efi/grub.efi
Choosing first two options yield "error: not a valid root device."
Choosing third booted functional system.

I see I can try reinstall grub from the commandline, should be pretty easy but I have to sleep. So maybe tomorrow.
Anyway, installer is broken with my setup.

My layout on that added SSD is a bit unconventional: I pre-made 500 MB EFI partition (nvme0n1p1) about a month ago, when I was installing Windows, but somehow Windows refused to use it, and made its own 100 MB, as the second partition.
Now, I was telling the installer to use that 500 MB partition for GRUB.

Please, if you need more info, ask me. I really DO want to use MX23, and still am unsuccessful.

Here are the logs:

I found a detail. I took Switzerland as localization in the installer. I checked the configured paper size with

Code: Select all

cat /etc/papersize
and the result was "letter".

That is not a Problem which is related to MX-23. I experienced that also on my MX-21 System. I know the issue is easily fixed by the user with

Code: Select all

sudo paperconfig -p a4
But to be honest as I switched from Windows to MX-21 that was the point which annoyed me most. Everything else worked so fine and smooth, but my prints and my scans were borked because of that. I really think, that the paperconfig should be set correctly by the installer according the chosen localization.

Hello @dolphin_oracle,
because above mentioned problems I was trying to use MX-BootRepair (again),
but, this reminds me as it always was: it was never able to unlock LUKS container in MX-BootRepair. Even if unlocked outside of it, it does not recognize root. Never ever worked for me on encrypted drives - 1, 2, 3 years in the past.

Is MX-BootRepair supposed to work on encrypted drives?
(I have still left /boot partition unencrypted, but it would be nice if the tool worked even in the case of encrypted boot.)

You made a wonderful installer, perfectly customizable, which opens the world of encryption even to "less power users",
so it would be nice to have this tool functional for them, to help them maintain their encrypted system.

Thank you in advance,
Andy

Network shares can be accessed without entering credentials. This is different to Xfce/Fluxbox versions.

Video cannot be played from a network share. Again, this differs from the other versions.

Neither of these are show-stoppers, but I thought worth mentioning.

Grabbed a screen shot of the "squished log out screen" mentioned a few messaged back. As you can see the user name "Media Maker" is right on top of the icons (more space needed to even it out). I am using 16x10 monitors so that is possibly a factor.

Also the other two items I mentioned are not on MX. I will edit my original post to make that clearer.

With MX 21.3 I can run without problem the .RUN files for example FreeFileSync_12.5_Install.run or the Telegram executable, but with MX 23 KDE and XFCE, it does not allow me to run it, not even by command line and granting all permissions. In the repositories there are these applications, but in old versions and I prefer the most updated ones, also every time I run the ones installed from repositories it asks me to update them. How can I run these files in MX 23?

NOTE: Sorry, the file was broken, I downloaded it again and it works with double click.

Ran into a rather troubling issue but also might be kinda good news since I might have found what was causing another issue. You guys know when I was complaining about an unresponsive mouse during intensive loads? Well I think I might have been able to isolate it down to a memory management issue.

The easiest way I know to guaranteed trigger this issue right now is to install the Glasgow Haskell Compiler, enter ghci in the Konsole, then type in without quotes, "reverse [0,(-1)..]

This will cause a MASSIVE spike in memory usage as it's calculating literal infinity. So much so that it will fill the RAM until it can't fill it anymore. Then, it will start making the system incredibly unresponsive. Like 5 seconds just to open a menu. The expected behavior should be to reserve a certain amount of memory for basic processes like GUI interaction. I tested this on systemd and I'll go ahead and try it now on SysVInit.

EDIT: It's generally unresponsive on SysVInit as well.

Yes, it works with systemd. Thank you.

Considering your comment, I would recommend to change the default upstarter from SysVInit to systemd in the installer of the KDE flavour.

I’m reading your post to mean that it may not be a good idea to run Kde/Plasma with the live USB anymore since you can’t run systemD with it?

I like a lot of text system monitors showing in the panel, but the ones available by default either took a lot of space on a horizontal panel (NetSpeed Monitor, I'm looking at you), or just didn't work on this laptop, where the same widgets in MX 21 worked pretty well.

I found that "get new widgets" and installing the "Resource Monitor: Fork" widget in the panel allowed for showing a lot of different values in a compact form, including CPU frequency, temperature, usage, disk I/0, network traffic, RAM usage, and swap usage. YMMV depending on hardware and kernel, of course.

Due to other issues reported in the RC2 thread, I have switched from sysVinit to systemd, as recommended in the responses.

Now I am getting

Code: Select all

Failed to start NetworkManager.service
although when I do

Code: Select all

sudo /usr/sbin/NetworkManager --no-daemon
it is reported to be already running.

Please advise, thanks

PS: I did the switch from sysVinit to systemd by installing the package systemd-sysv as recommended here
Maybe it's related?

I am also getting the same result in MX 21 with SystemD and failure to connect. It could be that some change that was made in MX 23 was also migrated down to MX 21 that is causing this issue.

we think systemd is processing the sysVinit script for network manager before it does the network-manager.service version. why I don't know, but that's why network-manager is running despite the failure message.

we are pushing a change to the sysVinit script that will cause the scripts to exit if systemd is running at PID1. in our tests, this allows systemd to start the network-manager.service version normally.

thanks for the report.

Thanks for the report, there's going to be a network-manager-sysvinit-compat package update after which if you reboot it should work normally.

So, it turns out that the out-of-memory system halting issue has been around for a VERY long time in the kernel. Thankfully though, I did find that there are several open-source tools available to address this issue. Would the developers be open to adding one of these to the default install to ensure better system stability?

I just noticed this, but I don't know how long it's been there. At boot I get a brief error during boot (between GRUB and the MX Logo - real neat BTW) about a USB hub not having any ports. Everything seems to work, but I haven't tried to plug something into all my ports. Any ideas if this should be ignored? Relative section from DMESG and QSI follow.

RC3 is working great as expected, however I am seeing one small issue with wayland sessiosn not working after installing the Nvidia driver using ddm-mx.

Issue:
Wayland session does not finalize the login
Wayland session loops the login back to the login screen

Expected result:
Wayland session logs into the desktop enviroment (KDE)

Reproduction steps:
[*] Install RC3
[*] Update all packages in Konsole
[*] Install Nvidia driver (latest from Debian repo)
[*] Reboot

I’m running Debian 12 with Wayland and nvidia on another system just fine. The only thing is that SDDM will not work with Plasma and wayland, so another login manager should be used.

Ohhhh the issue was SDDM? I was not aware. Assumed it was something with the drivers. Well, that's good at least.

Yup, the OTHER option of course is changing from Wayland back to x11 for Plasma on SDDM.

Hello! Thank you all SO much for all your work. I've been using MX Linux for years and love it... first post here, though.

I'm posting here because I couldn't find a Bugzilla space for it. I have solved this issue as detailed below, so hopefully it's a valid problem and corresponding solution. I also didn't include the Quick System Info because I thought that looked like overkill. I'll post it if you need it.

RC3 installed and humming along great overall. Installation went perfect with a standard path through it.

The Problem:
I have been adding PPAs recently to try getting a few straggler programs installed/tested. I was having this error pop up when running "add-apt-repository":

Problem with one PPA example:

Code: Select all

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:appimagelauncher-team/stable
Result is terminal is roughly this (not sure if this paste is for any PPA specifically, I've tested several):

Code: Select all

Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/bin/apt-add-repository", line 362, in <module>

    self._lpteam = self.lp.people(self.teamname)
                   ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
AttributeError: 'NoneType' object has no attribute 'people'
Solution:
After much messing about, I came across this tidbit that got me to a solution:
Check that the python-launchpadlib package is installed and up-to-date. This provides the underlying Launchpad API access.
So, I looked up "python-launchpadlib" in Synaptic and it was listed as not installed. I installed it and now PPAs are installing without a hitch.

I hope that's a decent report.. don't know if it's a bug somewhere or what. I just hoped it helped someone!

Cheers!

Python3 / PIP error: externally-managed-environment

This is a new one on me. I've always been able to install python packages with PIP in prior MX's, but now it's giving me an error that I have an "externally-managed-environment" and PIP will not install anything without doing some seemingly extreme acrobatics. Example:

Code: Select all

pip install python3-discogs-client
error: externally-managed-environment

× This environment is externally managed
╰─> To install Python packages system-wide, try apt install
python3-xyz, where xyz is the package you are trying to
    install.

If you wish to install a non-Debian-packaged Python package,
    create a virtual environment using python3 -m venv path/to/venv.
Then use path/to/venv/bin/python and path/to/venv/bin/pip. Make
    sure you have python3-full installed.

If you wish to install a non-Debian packaged Python application,
it may be easiest to use pipx install xyz, which will manage a
virtual environment for you. Make sure you have pipx installed.

    See /usr/share/doc/python3.11/README.venv for more information.

note: If you believe this is a mistake, please contact your Python installation or OS distribution provider. You can override this, at the risk of breaking your Python installation or OS, by passing --break-system-packages.
hint: See PEP 668 for the detailed specification.
Although this particular package IS available as an apt install, in the past many have only been available via PIP. Is this a feature? Or a bug? If the former, how will the apt packages be kept up to date?
