WiFi Problems

I'm in the process of switching to MX. I made my laptop dual boot and things are going well so far. I'm having problems with my Wi-Fi. My home network has two available networks, I can only connect to one, when I try to connect to the other it says Authentication required by Wi-Fi network Passwords or encryption keys are required tp access the Wi-Fi network "name". I'm 100% sure I've entered the password correctly and I've tried multiple times. I am also having the same problem at school. I get the same message when I try to connect to the school network.

I'm brand new to Linux so if someone could help, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks

Maybe it's a simple thing: You can check the box "show the password" when typing. Also if you use a usb device, and click on a network to connect, it may bring the other device as default. In my case it's so.. but this is due to xfce 4.14.. It was normal on xfce 4.12 - MX 18.3 )

(the one over the password field, click on it and select device..)

Or.. You can right-click on network-manager icon "edit networks", then select & "delete" the ones that don't work. And try to connect anew..

I would ask for "Quick System Info" but it seems to be an authentication issue rather than drivers etc..

Or, you can also try to connect them one by one (first stop the other working connection, then click the other one...)

I tried all of that and no luck. I'll include my quick system info just in case. It's really weird to me because I connect all my devices at home and school with no problems. I disconnected and reconnected my windows computer to check the password and there was no problem. Same at school. I can't figure out why it says it's incorrect.

Meanwhile, can you do this: Edit the post (pencil icon) then select the info from "System.." to the end then click the icon < / >

Code: Select all

Then it will look like this and be readable & occupy less space
Also when trying to connect, be sure bluetooth is off.

When you do:
  • Right-Click Network Icon on panel
  • Select Edit Connections...
  • Double-Click the Connection with security issues
  • Click on the WiFi Security tab
What is the Security field set to?

You probably want WPA & WPA2 Personal.

I tired this, the security is set to WPA & WPA2 Personal.

Bring up a terminal window and do:

Code: Select all

dmesg -Hw
Bring up another terminal window and do:

Code: Select all

sudo nmcli monitor
Try to start your failing network connection.

Share any interesting messages...

Thanks for helping. Still no luck. The first command create a ton of output. I don't really understand. Some was red, which seems like an error

Code: Select all

[ +0.137589] ath10k_pci 0000:02:00.0: firmware: failed to load ath10k/pre-cal-pci-0000:02:00.0.bin (-2)

For the nmcli monitor command I got this

Code: Select all

wlan0: deactivating
Networkmanager is now in the 'disconnecting' state
Connectivity is now 'none'
wlan0: disconnected
Networkmanager is now in the 'disconnected' state
There's no primary connection
wlan0: using connection 'Home'
wlan0: connecting (prepare)
Networkmanager is now in the 'connecting' state
wlan0: connecting (configuring)
wlan0: connecting (need authentication)
wlan0: connecting (prepare)
wlan0: connecting (configuring)
wlan0: connecting (need authentication)
wlan0: connection failed
Networkmanager is now in the 'disconnected' state
wlan0: disconnected
I'm not sure what else I should include.

In fact, I'd suggest reinstalling driver etc (Qualcomm Atheros is one the most problematic ones) but I quit the idea as you said it connects to some networks..

The one that needs authentication is the built-in device QCA6174 (wlan 0 )

Can you unplug & plug the usb device and when connecting select that device above password field?

Are there any special characters in the password(s)? Are you sure your keyboard is configured correctly for all of the characters?

Perhaps try connecting from the "live" environment to eliminate misconfiguration.

You're primarily interested in what gets added to the end of the dmesg -Hw output, not the initial stuff (for now).

I'd run:

Code: Select all

dmesg -Hw
Enter a string of "===" and hit <Enter>:

Code: Select all

===================================================================

Then when you try to Connect, concentrate on what comes after the separator line.

Also I can connect to my school network by plugging, but the wifi keeps saying the same thing.

The USB device is just a mouse. I tried unplugging it and connecting. No luck.

Can you physically turn off the wifi device (button) then reboot when off, and when still off:

Code: Select all

sudo modprobe -r ath10k_pci ; sudo modprobe ath10k_pci
Shutdown pc (when still off), switch on the device, start pc..

Still no luck. The network it does connect to says 5G while the other one doesn't. Does that make a difference?

Ok, I seem to have fixed it. Going with the 5G thing I went into the settings and changed the Band to 2.4 GHz and now it works. I'll try the network at school tomorrow. Band was set to automatic before not 5G, but hard setting it 2.4 worked. Who knows? I'll update tomorrow when I try at school.

Thank You to everyone who tried to help. It's really nice to know there's a community of people out there to help with MX. You guys are great!

You did very well. Because those wifi devices generally have problems with either the 801.11 "n" mode or 5G.

So that, in router settings changing to b/g or g only from b/g/n make them work, also channel from auto to 1 or 11.

Also when you start bluetooth, it uses 2.4GHz too, therefore they work like a jammer for each other with the wifi. So use one of them when needed.. Bluetooth or wifi ..

Try changing the channel on the WiFi to sort that out, since WiFi operates over a range of frequencies depending on the channel selected. Bluetooth operates at 2.45GHz, so select a wi-fi channel that doesn't clash with this range. Alternatively just use 5GHz WiFi. It will probably be faster too since that channel won't have as much traffic on it, and the carrier is at 5GHz, but you sacrifice the range. In just a single-house/building environment it should be fine though.

:
When you run dmesg -Hw in a terminal window (at a CLI prompt of a TUI), you get: (CLI = Command Line Interface, TUI = Text User Interface)
  • The display of messages from the kernel ring buffer
  • -H (--human) Enables human-readable output, colorizes the output & formats the timestamps for humans.
  • -w (--follow) Waits for new messages when it gets to end of the buffer.
  • You can break out by typing ^C (<Ctrl>-C)
The cursor sits at the bottom of the terminal on a blank line waiting for dmesg to push more output.
Turns out, what you type is displayed in terminal window and ignored by dmesg.
You can use this feature to "decorate" the output on the screen by inserting separator strings,
comments, markers, etc to break up the output into recognizable chunks.

Here's an example from one of my systems:

Code: Select all

$ dmesg -Hw
:

I typed in these lines before carrying out the noted actions:

I find it makes the output more readable, to me at least.

I hope that provides some edification and enlightenment. ;)

To be clear, when you say "by plugging", do you mean plugging in an Ethernet (Cat-5) cable?

That's a different network interface, utilizing different technology.

Code: Select all

$ nmcli device
DEVICE TYPE STATE CONNECTION
wlan0 wifi connected XXXXXXX-Net
eth0 ethernet unavailable --
lo loopback unmanaged --
