I did try vivaldi once and the resource usage was atrocious when compared to firefox on certain things..To me personally it looks like vivaldi is attempting to cram extensions into it's browser..the features are nice i will admit but the bling is not of interest to me and looking at the forum it is full of bugs which have not been resolved for years...

With 16 GIGS of ram, resources do not concern me that much. Typically use 3.5 GIG with Vivaldi running. Bugs? I have not experienced any.

@dotw May I suggest you try the MX-21.3 XFCE live ISO (supported to June 2026) and see if the Firefox performance improves. (I would still turn Hardware Acceleration off)

Thank you very much for mentioning brave browser.
Didn't know, that it exists. Firefox has been the only browser I used for many years.

Tried it and I'm very pleased about its behaviour. Its true, some webpages have smarter output than using firefox.
I also like braves configuration. Its userfriendlier than firefox.
What really bugs me (but its the same for firefox and chromium): the browser don't use and respect window manager defaults.
I use kde with dedicated virtual screens and sometimes I'd like to switch window between one screen and all screens, which is a one-click-action with window-manager driven windows. Using above browsers its impossible :(

Hello, dotw.

I'd like to support siamhie's advice.

I have got some doubts that a machine from 2013 will profit from using a kernel 6.1.0 instead of the MC 21.3 default kernel 5.10.0.
I am also a bit suspicious whether it was a good idea to follow Pjotr's instruction, which aims at Ubuntu based systems (that use systemd), on the Debian based MX Linux 21.3, in particular as you seem to start it up using SysVinit, which implies that systemd is not used.

Apart from that, have you taken the time to try what I had suggested in my post above perhaps? (3 steps in the lower half of the message)

Karl

There's also "SRWare Iron", which is lightning fast and somewhat like "Brave" but lighter on resources. No "Tor" integration though, but still a valid option IMHO...

If privacy-focused browser is needed, then one can go with LibreWolf as well. It is Firefox fork, but comes with enhanced protection by default.

Though only thing which I don't like about this browser is that it doesn't opens in full-screen unlike other browsers.

1. Disable resistFingerprinting (settings>LibreWolf)
or
2. open about:config and change these two values (privacy.window.maxInnerWidth) (privacy.window.maxInnerHeight)

Years ago I downloaded the source code for it, they put it into a .zip split into four files, over 600MB, and when I merged them and opened it there was trash files and ads and all kinds of junk in it.
Ever since then I have considered them a shady outfit that I will not trust.
