Neither XFCE nor KDE Plasma booted from the USB stick on older Lenovo PC as eg X1 Carbon (some kind of QSI below).
Similar on othe Lenovos of about that generation.
I have tested 4-5 different USB sticks, tested create the sticks in some different ways - same result: it looks like the PC is connecting to the USB (some USB have indicators) but nothing on the display.
Other OS works fine, as MX 23.6, latest Manjaro.
The very same USB sticks works fine with newer PC (like the Lenovo Slim Yoga).
oh, yes, the QSI: I use similar command on the installed OS:

Can you describe what not booting means? For instance, do you not see a grub menu at all, or do you get a grub menu but no desktop? Or something in-between.
Thanks for the QSI-substitute!

I was able to install MX 25 Beta1 on an HP laptop but I can't install it on my main laptop which is a ten-year-old Dell Inspiron 5558. The funny thing is that the latter had MX 23.6 installed before that, albeit with some problems.
Does that mean that my hardware faces issues?
I'm attaching QSI using the live USB.

while it could be hardware related, the /var/log/minstall.log file might be useful to see where the installation process failed. what sort of problems did mx23 have?

How can I disable yakuake and its F4 shortcut?
That is completely anoying me!
I heavily use krusader, which has F4 shortcut to edit files. Even with krusader being active, F4 opens the anoying dropdown shell

I had the same problem with a Lenovo X1 Carbon. with MX 23.6 working on it, but MX 25 refused to even boot. Also reported that but seemingly it was not taken seriously (@Jerry3904). Which in a way could be understood: there are now 10+ pages with reports and if some few older PC cannot take the Beta-1 that is a minor issue. For us with these PC it is of course irritating.
From my experience with Spiral-Linux (based on bookworm), I have an idea which might be working on MX23.6 too.
An upgrade to a new stable Version ( from bookworm to trixie ) is easy to to with Synaptic.
Disabling a few things in the Repositories, checking only the stable repo (which is of course trixie now) , applying the upgrade with Synaptic
and trixie is installed.
Afterwards changing "bookworm" to "trixie" in the fasttrack and other repos which can be seen in the repo-gui and that is all.
It worked very well.
MX25 uses the common debian repos and only adds the mx-repo. So that must be done with Synaptic too .... and then it should work on your Lenovo X1 Carbon.
Since I am a Noob, I would like to ask the developers if my idea is worth trying it before I would try it.
I have my personal data on a separate data-partition which is not affected by new installations of Distros on other partitions.
Since I have a working MX23.6 Xfce on one of my partitions, I will try it for myself when I find time.
Here is the link to the description how to use Synaptic for upgrading

An upgrade to a new stable Version ( from bookworm to trixie ) is easy to to with Synaptic.
I would recommend waiting for official instructions (
@dolphin_oracle when do you think we should publish them?)
The issue is not that simple because of how we have systemd-shim set up in MX23 and is not available in Debian Trixie the user will have to choose to switch to systemd or to sysvinit and there are some extra steps involved in that.

I think we will publish them a little closer to RC, if not RC1.

The only error-message in Synaptic when I changed "bookworm" to "trixie" in the repo-gui occured with the mx-repos.
It said that the keys are wrong. I don't remember the exact words.
Right now the upgrade takes place with the mx-updater.
Ok, something went wrong.
When booting into the upgraded partition, I end up in an endless cycle.
A screen (black background) where it says: "Welcome to MxLinux! Powered by Debian"
Second line: "mx-xfce login:"
I type my username, then a prompt for the password, type in my password .... it does something,
then starts again with "Welcome to MxLinux" Powered by Debian" etc.
Since I don't need this now corrupted partition anymore, I will delete it for further use , maybe installing MX25-beta KDE on it.
I like the MX25-beta Xfce (systemd) . It works fine.

I can't install it on my main laptop which is a ten-year-old Dell Inspiron 5558. The funny thing is that the latter had MX 23.6 installed before that, albeit with some problems.
Does that mean that my hardware faces issues?
Maybe would be good, if you describe what "can't install" might mean.
Also do you know the differenc of UEFI ESP install and legacy boot installe, b/c you Live QSI shows you booting in legacy BIOS/MBR boot mode.
Code: Select all

But the main drive /dev/sda is on GPT partition table, where legacy MBR install may have difficulties to boot. And I'm not sure the Installer is really helping here in sorting out this situation.
