Forum Dark Mode

Hello folks,

Just my opinion here.
The MX Forum looks like it stayed on 2001.
I mean it is super confusing and dear God on mobile devices it's even worse.
To be honest it's ugly.
I have used (and still use some) Manjaro, Zorin (IMO are the best looking) Linux Mint (also stayed on 2001) forums.
I see forums from other distros like Endeavour, openSUSE, Solus, Cachy OS etc and they all have the same base (I guess is Discourse forum software?).
They all lo great on all devices.
And most of all they have Dark Mode option...

Question:
Has anyone responsible ever considered changing the forum layout base to make it more modern?
I mean the forums I mentioned are feature pack and super intuitive to use and are great for mobile devices.

I get lost in this forum (same thing on Linux Mint). Have to circle around to find easy stuff.
And no Dark Mode... it hurts my eyes lol.

I always use dark mode in EVERYTHING when available.

I'd just use an extention like "Dark Background and Light Text" for a Mozilla based browser, or something similar from the chrome store for chrome based browsers

Your question is better directed here as that is the software used. https://www.phpbb.com/

Then you should probably invest in some computer glasses:

If you use Firefox, you can set Colors to always override, then set this website to be what ever color you want. (including 'dark mode')

I am sure other browsers have this ability too, and you can set to your desired colors.

For example Vivaldi

Aside from the fact that those tools bork this site up as well....

Yep lots of them and they never end with providing a dark theme.

I can't speak for extensions from the chrome store, but using "Dark Background and Light Text", currently with Librewolf, but also previously with various incarnations of Firefox, I've never had a problem with the forum being displayed irregularly. Here's what I see when using the extension.

The native dark modes available in the web browser I would suspect work better than the extensions since they are are specifically written for the browsers

Hi,

To be clear I'm happy with how things are and I don't have a dog in this fight.. On the topic of phpBB Forums and dark themes I will mention I'm a member at linuxmusicians.com and they use phpBB as well. They have a phpBB add-on 'board styles' Plugin enabled which allows members to choose how the board appears and offers a few choices. The default forum look is similar to the MX default and I find the options are a great way to transform the somewhat dated looking phpBB default into something much more modern without requiring any special web extensions etc. since it's the native forum software. Here is a screenshot of the dark theme option 'Prosilver', pardon the Windows screenshot I'm working in my Win partition right now...

I like that I can easily play around with text, link, and background colour combinations in this extension, but, yes, I belive you are right. Since most browsers now feature their own built-in dark mode option, add-ons for that purpose are becoming superfluous.

FWIW phpBB offers some 80+ dark themes. Presumably the webmaster here is able to make one or more selectable by readers here in their accounts.

Never a problem using Firefox dark mode that's in toolbar setting bottom of page - manage themes (if you didn't know) , still got Dark Background and Light Text addon some sites don't go to dark so instead of using the default setting found use of invert setting for pages like that that is good to fix problem.

Dark mode gets my vote.
I get impression it is not a standardized thing and users have to opt for it themselves.

That may just be the way it is - but even likes of Wikipedia give it as a browser option

Dark (just right)

The Firefox extension Dark Background and Light Text is working great for me.

Super easy to add site exceptions compared to the other two under discussion here in this thread.

Do people visit here for the modern looks that change over time or Do they visit for the information found in searches, the help received when their computer stuffs up, if anyone doesn't like the look Well change the thing there are settings and addons available at the click of the mouse I think the content is more important than the look that can be easily changed to suit the individual, Keywords D.I.Y.

I agree. I don't really care that much how a forum looks as long as I don't have trouble reading the text. I want a forum that gives me accurate information to help me when I have trouble. In my opinion this forum and the Zorin forum are the two best forums I have found for Linux users. Both are friendly and give good advice.

So will it be installed/enabled?? I stay up late at night and would like to have the option to view websites in Dark Mode rather than Light. Thanks!
