User experience - loosing account permission (apparently)

Hi,

I am using MX Linux for a long time now, but lately I have been experiencing a rare issue. Sometimes and it is not always, it seems that simply I "loose" permissions as user in such a way that, for example, if I click on the "close session" icon on the system tray, the controls corresponding to "restart", "shutdown" and "suspend" are dimmed so I cannot use them. Of course, I installed the system with my user, so it is needless to say that my user has superuser privileges.

Likewise, if I try to lower the screen brightness for example, it does not work.

If I try and use Ctrl+Alt+F1 to open a TTY, I login, and use "sudo reboot" and the system does not ask for password and simply reboots. After the system is up again, the issue dissapears. I mean, the close session control works, the brightness works and so on.

Below you can find my quick system info:

Moved to correct subforum, you are not asking for help sitewise.

@zopeck

Code: Select all

Partition:
  ID-1: / raw-size: 198.04 GiB size: 193.87 GiB (97.90%) used: 174.47 GiB (90.0%) fs: ext4
    dev: /dev/nvme0n1p5 maj-min: 259:5
This partition is too full. You have to move a bunch of stuff out of there or soon your system will lock you out entirely.

Hi j2mcgreg,

So, according to your experience, how much free space do you think the system needs in order to work properly?

Thanks.

You never want it to be more than 80% full.

Ok, thank you very much for your prompt answer. I will try and get the free space needed and then do a follow up. I will let you know the results as soon as I can.

Best regards,
zopeck

Hi!

Well, I freed up some space, so I now have about 24% free disk space, and since the last time I wrote, today the issue showed up again. So, this should mean that the issue is not related to lack of free space.

Please let me know if you have another idea so as to guide to a solution.

If you need further information I will be more than glad to provide. Thanks in advance. Best regards,
zopeck

There is a known issue with "user rights" and admin abilities - typically happening when you logout and then back in.
viewtopic.php?t=81139&hilit=authentication

So far, there is no 'fix' that I am aware of ... other than.. I lock and never log out.

The issue appears to show up every time you log out on some computers and 'once in a while' on others. Timing appears to be somewhat of a factor... but not 'the issue' .

Hi CharlesV

Thanks for your help. I did a Timeshift Backup and launched the lightdm upgrade. Will do a follow up and then let know here the results.

Cheers and keep it up! Best regards,

Hi,

Today is Wednesday 11th, it's been 3 days since update, so far so good, but perhaps it is a little bit too soon to tell. Think need say 4 to 6 more days to let the issue have time and opportunity to express itself...

Time will tell. Regards to all.

Oh! And I just almost forgot!:

DW cannot fool me... MX Linux is the best distro. Let's keep it up!

Hello everybody,

Today the issue manifested itself again

It happened right after logging to the system. Just like all the times before, and as now I am used to check the logout button just to check, with great grief I verified that the restart and shutdown buttons were dimmed, and, just like before, if I tried to use the brightness controls, the brightness did not work.

One thing that I noticed is that I have compiz active and that sometimes it seemed to have certain issues loading the various scripts that activate the window effects, so, just to make the test, I deactivated compiz to see if it is related to the problem.

Will continue to do the follow up and let you know if it has any kind of effect in relation to the "permissions" issue. Regards,
zopeck

There have been other reports of odd behaviour by folks who are using the 6.11,10-1 kernel. You might try using Boot Options in MX Tools to roll back the previous kernel: 6.10.11 and see if the problem disappears.

Hi j2mcgreg,

I will wait perhaps two or three days, and see if the problem persists, and if so, then I will try and apply what you suggest. Thank you very much.

I will let you know the results of either path. Regards,
zopeck

Hello everybody,

Today is day 5 of the follow up test, where I disabled compiz, in order to check if this could be the reason why I experience the issue of "loose of permissions" as detailed before.

Well, till now, the issue did not manifest itself. May be compiz is the one to blame? Currently I am using kernel 6.11.10-1-liquorix-amd64. Compiz is ver. 0.8.18

I think 5 days is a reasonable time to wait for the issue, isn't it? The validation itself then, could be to enable compiz again, and wait, say 5 more days and see.
Now I will activate compiz again and wait for the results. I will let you know.

Regards,
zopeck.
