I have used XFCE since I started using Linux. I usually set up 4 work spaces One is my every day things.Another is where I play with programming. Others are for momentary tests.
NB: The doctors say I have essential tremors. My hands and fingers shake. I can no longer read my own writing and I've found my left hand is not as shaky soIuse it for the mouse.

#1 When my finger touches the center scroll wheel on the mouse and the cursor happen to be on the back ground (usually is!), .it switches me to another work space!
#2 If I try to open another copy of an app, especially Firefox or Geany, it will either move the already open one to this work space or switch me to that work space.

Would one of the other DEs isolate the work spaces? Or not keep jumping to other work spaces?

I see that you have our Test Repo active. You should only activate it to grab a package and then deactivate it. Otherwise. when it produces updates, it can mess with other components in your system.
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

That's because you have Window Manager Tweaks set to 'Use the mouse wheel on the desktop to switch workspaces'.

A solution to #2 exists using the panel's docklike taskbar plugin, but there may or may not be other solutions specific to how you normally launch your applications. Please specify how you launch your applications; list multiple methods, if applicable.

Best of luck,

Greg.

@ BV206: Thank you. That, and a couple others located there, took care of inadvertent work spaces switching or pulling open apps from other work spaces. I don't remember seeing those options before this.
search bar therein.
@Greg Branno:n: Most frequently, I double click on the desired file in thunar. Occasionally, I'll use the Start menu or the search bar therein.

Now. I will watch to see if other frustrations are pending.
