MXLinux plasma version and libreoffice file picker problem

#1 Post by noesnada »

I'm using the latest version of MXLinux KDE and when I save a file in libreoffice I don't get the dolphin file picker or the standard gtk picker. I get a much more basic file picker that does not show any of my bookmarked folders in my file system. It's harder to navigate. I've seen this picker before but normally I only see it with really basic apps.

I'd expect to see the dolphin file picker or the gtk file picker, but I'm getting this other one that I'm not familiar with.

Here is what I get.

Image

This is not the dolphin file picker, but it would do.

Can anyone tell me why this is happening, and how I can change it please. I did search the forum but did not find a post on the topic.

Many thanks.

With all help requests, as per forum rules (which, if you haven't, please read), please share your full Quick System Info, do not edit.
If need be, you can do this with the LiveUSB, thanks.

Sorry. I should have done that without being asked. It's below.

And thanks for your reply.

I'm in the middle of searching it up online right now, but don't want to break my system either, as right now it's working great.

Your lack of a swap partition is cause for concern. There are a lot of folks touting the idea that with enough ram available you can forgo creating a swap partition or file, but the reality is that some applications still expect it to be there (even though it may never be used) and can give unpridictable results when swap space is not present. The good news is that you can add a swap file at any time and here’s how:

https://www.digitalocean.com/community/ ... -debian-11
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

Hi. Thanks.

I've never used swap in any distro, as this machine has 128gb of ram, and my laptop 64.

Could this be causing the file picker problem?

No, swap would not be a factor in the file picker.

Thanks. I kind of thought that.

I am used to seeing the gtk file picker with libreoffice in all of the distros I've used (gtk and qt) but I've never seen libreoffice use this horrible picker before.

so this is very irritating, and I've never noticed I guess.

libreoffice-plasma is the integration package, and its preinstalled. however, it appears its completely ignored by libreoffice.

running

Code: Select all

SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=plasma libreoffice
gets us where we need to go, we just need to make it automatically use the environment variable.

Thanks for your reply, and please excuse my ignorance, but I'd better ask.

I take it I should just paste that into the terminal?

If I'm correct, is there a way to reverse it if the result is not as expected on my system. What file does it modify?

Wow. I just went ahead and pasted that into a terminal. It opened up libreoffice and all of a sudden libreoffice looked like something from windows 98 :-)
