videodownloadhelper--companion app problem again

#1 Post by Seeker »

Hi all:
After having received kind assistance here re updated vdh, I again had a problem using it today. Got message that companion app needed, although had installed it. So I downloaded vdhcoapp-linux-x86_64.deb to my downloads folder, opened a terminal there (as directed, as regular user, not as root) and typed vdhcoapp install. That generated "file not found". So I moved the file to desktop and did the exercise again, in the downloads folder, this time typing vdhcoapp-linux-x86_64.deb install. Got message that the action is not permitted. What to do? tnx in advance for kind assistance!

Maybe preface that command with sudo.
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

Just right-click on the deb file and : "Install Deb Files" or 'Open With "Deb Installer" '...

"as directed"? Who is providing those directions, because they are not correct, in several ways.

There are several ways to install deb files in MX, but the easiest is simply to right-click the file and open it with one of the file manager actions that will install deb files, or use MX Deb Installer. All debs require root or sudo passwords to install; that's just the facts.
MXPI = MX Package Installer
QSI = Quick System Info from menu
The MX Test repository is mostly backports; not the same as Debian testing

They mean the previous thread but confusing the instructions with the tar.bz2 file :)

Run ./vdhcoapp install (not as root) after extracting the binaries (not necessary for .deb).

Hi all: I just went to my desktop, where I moved the file. Right clicked on it and selected deb pkg installer. it went through the motions but said pkg is already installed. so don't understand why vdh didn't work and I got the message that companion app is needed. will try again tonight or tomorrow and let you all know what's what.

Which version of MX are you having this problem on?

What browser is it? You may need to manually copy the file from here to there in home ( i.e. I had to do so on Slimjet (based on Chromium))

i.e. copy

Code: Select all

~/.config/chromium/NativeMessagingHosts/net.downloadhelper.coapp.json
or

Code: Select all

~/.config/google-chrome/NativeMessagingHosts/net.downloadhelper.coapp.json
to the other browser's in .config ...

(Finally open a new browser , then the extension settings and make it recheck)

If you're having this much trouble with an application, you might want to consider reading the software's wiki and following their troubleshooting steps linked there. They have more information about this software and a support forum that should be able to tell you what's wrong.
