Attempts to connect to a Windows PC using Warpinator fail
Attempts to connect my MX 23.2 PC to a Windows 10 PC using Warpinator (Version 1.4.5 for MX; Version 0.4.1 for Windows) fail with “No other computers found …” displayed on the MX PC. The Windows pc displays a ‘No devices found’ message within the Warpinator window, even after a rescan. If I attempt to connect to a PC running Linux Mint 21.3 (Version 1.8.3) on the same private network, via Warpinator, connection is successful; bidirectional transfers are possible. Again the Windows Warpinator cannot find any devices, even with the Mint PC on-line.
I am using the same Group code and port numbers on all three PCs.
To the best of my understanding the Firewall rules in Windows reflect those in use on the Mint and MX PCs – they have been created to allow In & OUT via TCP and UDP on my chosen ports - but only on my Private network.
Although there is no ‘connect to server’ option in Thunar, I have tried connecting using "smb://WindowsHostname/Windowssharename/" in the Thunar address box. The attempt fails with: “Failed to open "File System". Failed to mount Windows share. Invalid argument" - whether I use an anonymous or registered user login. I don’t understand if the Domain name has to be the same for all 3 PCs and I don’t know how to set it on the MX PC.
I have searched for a ‘problem source identification’ procedure or troubleshooting guide but can find nothing of relevance or that works. None of the forums posts on this topic, on Windows, Mint or MX support sites, have provided advice which successfully addresses the problem. Where should I be looking to understand how to solve this problem?
For further information: I have been trying, perhaps 3 or 4 times a year, for the past 15 years at least, to get Linux and Windows to talk to each other on my Home/Private Network. Never succeeded once. (I used to use an Iomega Home Media Network Drive as an intermediate 'staging post' for file transfers, but that broke after SMB 1 was deprecated. I now use USB and an SD card to transfer files the 80 cms or so between Linux and Windows PCs. We are in the 1980's, aren't we?) I really surprises me that it is proving so difficult and that there is no documented procedure, written at the non-expert level for the typical home user, to achieve this connectivity. I don't believe I'm the only person in the world with this requirement - especially given the impetus to move from Win 10 to Linux (often to MX or Mint) resulting from Microsoft's latest 'jest', which prevents some applications from running on older hardware.

Re: Attempts to connect to a Windows PC using Warpinator fail
The Warpinator Github page has a section called "Troubleshooting tips" and a subsection called "Solving connection issues" that I encourage you to read and follow carefully.LateJunction wrote: Fri Feb 02, 2024 5:08 am I have searched for a ‘problem source identification’ procedure or troubleshooting guide but can find nothing of relevance or that works. It sounds like you've already done some troubleshooting with respect to checking ports and IP addresses, but that page is written by someone with far more Warpinator experience than anyone you may find here. It even mentions there's an option to have Warpinator automagically add firewall rules for you if you use gufw.
In short:
- On each machine, confirm that Warpinator is running and listening on an external IP address. Use "netstat -na" on Windows and "sudo ss -plant" on Linux. Verify that the Warpinator binary has state LISTENING on 42000/tcp and 42001/tcp.
- Assert that each firewall is explicitly allowing connections to ports 42000/tcp and 42001/tcp. Test this with telnet from a separate machine.
- Run identical versions of the software on each endpoint. If you run different versions of Warpinator between two machines, you have an obligation to yourself to read the changelog of every intermediate release to ensure there isn't a compatibility problem mentioned by the developer.
It depends on what you need from a heterogeneous home network. Microsoft has a vested interest in making sure that people using their software want and need to buy more of their software. It's good for them when people can't or won't adopt other platforms. Integrating Windows into a UNIX environment is possible, but it's really only meant for big companies, spending big bucks, and the only motivation is to integrate with the UNIX solution in order to eliminate it.LateJunction wrote: Fri Feb 02, 2024 5:08 am We are in the 1980's, aren't we?) I really surprises me that it is proving so difficult and that there is no documented procedure, written at the non-expert level for the typical home user, to achieve this connectivity. I don't believe I'm the only person in the world with this requirement
Samba servers exist that allow you to integrate Linux and Windows networks pretty effectively, but it is far from an easy or a simple service to setup and maintain. I've never used Warpinator, or Magic Wormhole, or demonsaw, but to push files around on my network I use SyncThing and it's been pretty reliable for me for almost a decade. It seems similar to Warpinator and uses 22000/tcp instead.

Most useful advice and insightful analysis - thank you. Parts seem to have come from the writings of Sun Tzu, so I'll pay close attention.DukeComposed wrote: Fri Feb 02, 2024 8:11 am

Re: Attempts to connect to a Windows PC using Warpinator fail
The Warpinator Github page provided no new insights that might explain this connection failure, aside from the option to run Warpinator in debug mode. This provides no output under Windows but the output under Linux might mean something to the developers (but sadly not to me) so I have submitted a 'bug' reported to GitHub, knowing full well that it is not a bug; but I might get some feedback (probably ending in "... off").
To me this looks like a configuration anomaly with my specific instance of Win 10 - but the chances of getting any response from anybody in the Windows support community on a problem with Warpinator - or indeed on getting Linux to communicate with Windows, which is the substantive issue here - are probably vanishingly small.

Re: Attempts to connect to a Windows PC using Warpinator fail
I use warpinator and also win10 workstations .
I assume you have tried with all firewalls off (both windows and MX ) ?
And all machines are on the same network? (ie no NAT between them etc )

Re: Attempts to connect to a Windows PC using Warpinator fail
Try starting it from the terminal. It might give some extra hints as to what is going on. There might be a command line option to make it more verbose in initializing, error reporting, and debugging.
Starting with --help gives a LOT of info.

Re: Attempts to connect to a Windows PC using Warpinator fail
Hmmm seems Warpinator wants systemd to start "failed to commit changes to dconf: Could not connect: No such file or directory". Reboot in systemd and it opens.
Warpinator can 'see' (finds, gets IP, and resolves name) my Virtual Box Mint 21.3 instance but cannot connect. Time to reboot 2nd PC in systemd!

Re: Attempts to connect to a Windows PC using Warpinator fail
Did some testing. Hosts: MX 23.2 Xfce, Mint 21.3 VBox on the previous PC, MX 23.2 KDE. Systemd it seems is a requirement (Ubuntu is the 'Home OS' for Warpinator).
There is no difference if Warpinator is from MX Test Repo or Flatpacks. Both are version 1.6.4. The install recommended was ticked.
Here's where it gets weird.
MX 23.2 Xfce below
MX 23.2 KDE
Linux Mint VBox
FYI: this candle is burning on both ends - Linux Mint Forums - Networking - Attempts to connect to a Windows PC running Warpinator fail

Here's where it gets weird.
- Firewall Off/Disabled on BOTH ends all works OK.
- Enable/turn ON a firewall on MX 23.2 Xfce and it fails to connect universally (MX 23.2 Xfce <---> MX 23.2 Xfce broken as well). 1
- MX KDE 23.2 has no issue. Ditto for Mint 21.3 - both work with firewall ON/Enabled
