Brave No Longer Launches On MX Linux

Posted: Thu Oct 19, 2023 8:51 am

Brave failed with update 1.59.117 at the same time as many other users. Removing my profile did not resolve the problem so I reluctantly switched to Firefox while awaiting a fix. 1.59.120 arrived today but unfortunately Brave still will not launch. I have a blank ‘default’ profile so I know it is not extensions or themes. I am at a loss for what to do. I will include the error shown when launching from a terminal.

Your lack of a swap partition is cause for concern. There are a lot of folks touting the idea that with enough ram available you can forgo creating a swap partition or file, but the reality is that some applications still expect it to be there (even though it may never be used) and can give unpridictable results when swap space is not present. The good news is that you can add a swap file at any time and here’s how:

I have been running this configuration for something like 5 years. Why would it suddenly be a problem now?

Since an update to Brave is the root cause of your problem, I think that you should be querying it's developers. What we do know is that a lot of stability problems appear in MX when swap space is absent and disappear when it's present.

No, that doesn't work either.

Hmmm - thats peculiar

I'm currently running the brave.appimage .from: https://github.com/eljamm/Brave-AppImag ... /v1.59.120 ..

FWIW - heres a recent thread regarding chrome official in the affected versions: https://support.google.com/chrome/threa ... de-5?hl=en

Have you possibly not updated for some time?
Did you possilby update from a notification? A notification directly from Brave and not update via MX-Updater or one of MX's native updaters/installers, e.g MXPI, synaptic, etc.

I don't really know this stuff, but others had a similar problem a month or two ago. IIRC, one may have updated via a notification, others I'm not sure what happened.
IIRC, uninstalling and installing (or reinstalling, not sure) seemed to solve the problem.
Also, check MX-Repo Manager, is the Brave repo enabled?

Again, I don't really know this stuff, but uninstalling and installing (or reinstalling) – I'd think it'd enable it's repo.

Greetz!

Yes, I always update from the MX Updater, never from an application menu.

Yes, the Brave repo is enabled.

Yes, I tried uninstalling and reinstalling including reinstalling the Brave repo.
