System continues to grow up, MX-23

The system continues to grow. I was downloading some videos from YouTube that I immediately deleted, that's all I can consider as the cause of this latest disproportionate increase...

QDirStat changed to a new format, perhaps more understandable, but I still don't see where the problem could be.

*The issue cannot be in 'Downloads' since I have the same things installed in MX-19 as in here and over there I only have 36% of the space occupied.
I have cleaned the system with Bleachbit, MXcleanup and a command that removes configurations, etc:

Try with ncdu command

sudo apt-get install ncdu -y

I decided to reinstall the system, the copy is much cleaner, I also enlarged it a bit more, to 45 GB.
I just have to be more careful with video downloads, etc.

It's still a mystery to me why the system grows out of control (I no longer download videos to it but directly to a USB stick) -- and no less mysterious how 'Bleachbit' can clean up 'sometimes' more than 5GB at a time:

Paste the echo command in a terminal and press Enter (that will add the maxsize value (limit) to the end of the related file). If you like you can also do it something smaller say 1M .

Just "add" the parameter (after a space) , so , it'll become:

quiet splash pci=nomsi,noaer

Yes, you can first delete those huge ones (either with such software or manually with root Thunar (or terminal of course) )

What we do is to prevent the inflation of them (from now on) ... Telling it to limit the size and also not to use :

PCIE advanced error reporting , and

MSI interrupts system-wide.

That one is used generally when keyboard / touchpad are not working. If there's still such a problem you can again add that.

I was reading something about it, although as usual I don't understand it well, I think it said that the 'logs' didn't stay in the system for long, that they were "recycled" ... anyway bleachbit cleans everything, it just does it "when 'he' wants".

Yes, that's all what the above "logrotate" is about :)

You can also use "MX Cleanup" of course (rather than Bleachbit). Safer.


(... So, what we do is: Limit the size, and say when it exceeds 1M it'll create a second (new) file to go on... however the number of files are also limited (to 4 by default, which we can change), that means: it'll be cleaning all the time "by itself" as a result (removing the oldest file and creating anew)

2.88 GB are from the previous backed up kern.log and syslog.

As I didn't want to confuse you more and more, I didn't suggest these, however "if you like only" the below will be more effective:

  • Code: Select all

    sudo rm /var/log/{kern*,syslo*}
    This will erase all (for those 2 only) and they'll start anew.

  • Code: Select all

    sudo sed -i 's/weekly/daily/g' /etc/logrotate.d/rsyslog

    Code: Select all

    sudo sed -i 's/rotate 4/rotate 1/g' /etc/logrotate.d/rsyslog
    These will change it from weekly rotating to daily and decrease the number of backups from 4 to 1
  • Also this will add the maxsize line (with a smaller value while we're at it) into the script ("among the lines" rather than to the end):

    sudo sed -i '/^\tmissingok/i\\tmaxsize 512k' /etc/logrotate.d/rsyslog

I'd advise also seeing what said logs actually contain, as logging gigabytes of stuff means something is hammering the logs pretty actively, to say the least. Even if you get the logs rotated in such a way they don't take up the space they previously did, you probably want to see what is the root cause of this much logging, and find a solution for that as well.

At first I thought it was due to the high activity I do in downloading videos in general to the system, but now I switch to the option of downloading them directly to a USB, and the problem continues, and I'm tired of it ... -- maybe it's "normal" and most users don't know it, or don't consider it because they simply have too much space in the partitions, or don't clean the system using Bleachbit, the only tool that really cleans thoroughly ... (after a total shutdown ...).

:smile: hehe, weelll... On the other hand, maybe you'd be surprised how many power users frequent these forums or this very thread. As for myself, I'm using MX as a base for my personal private Linux environment (for audio/music and development use, centered around commercial production software, live bootable, built as a direct continuity without any reinstalls during a bit over four years now, having in-place upgraded the underlying Debian and MX system twice already). Maintaining the master copy of this system in a virtual machine keeps me very aware of any anomalous allocation of disk space in the system.

Anyway, so, what did the logs contain?
