New Laptop with MX23 Freezing-Crashing

#1 Post by kd4e »

I've now had two incidents of my brand new Acer Aspire 3 freezing up during normal use (I don't game or video edit).

The laptop is unresponsive to "esc", or any of the usual ctrl-alt-backspace/esc/delete or to alt-F5.

The only option is 10 seconds on the power button to force a power down - then power up - not good.

This may or may not be related to the timing-out problem (sound and video settings lost & hdmi monitor disconnected despite all screensaver & energy saving disabled).

I'm not sure where to look for the cause of this instability.

Taking the rams out the re-seating solves such random / unknown freezing issues most of the times. (Though mem-test shows everything's ok).

Meanwhile:

Partition:
ID-1: / ... used: 102.46 GiB (87.9%)

Though this may/may not be related, make some cleaning before it gets worse.

( "Disk Usage Analyzer" and "MX Cleanup" will be useful. )

Also update the kernel. If might be driver issues. A more recent kernel might give you better results.

The ram is soldered in, so we can check that one off.

I may have to order a larger ssd or offload some rare-use content.

I'll try those two utilities, shortly.

Thanks!

EDIT: Just looked at Disk Usage and removed a bunch of old junk. I now have 100G free space. That should eliminate lack of space as a cause.

QUESTION: Would MX 23 make good use of a SWAP area to supplement the limited ram on this laptop?

Would not the new release of MX-23 have included a very recent kernel?

That is the latest stable kernel yes but MX also has the ahs (advanced hardware support) kernels for newer hardware.

Yes. You can also look at enabling zram:

Sort of. Certainly recent for Debian but not recent enough for your hardware. Debian's kernels tend to lag about a year behind what's current on the market because of the emphasis Debian puts on stability. For your Ryzen rig you should be using the Advanced Hardware Systems (AHS) version of MX 23 which comes with a 6.4.xxx kernel. Once that is installed, you should upgrade to the Liquorix 6.5.xxx kernel and headers that are available in the Enabled Repos section of MX Package Installer (MXPI). My HP 15 is very similar to your Acer and that is what I am using. For reference, here is my QSI:

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

Re: New Laptop with MX23 Freezing-Crashing

We just added a newer Mesa to the MX 23 AHS video driver stack, and it looks like it's working a treat, so you'll get all those benefits if you add the ahs section with MX repo manager and do an upgrade.

I would also remove any of the default dkms packages we install by default to support various non-kernel hardware drivers, since they just make kernel updates take much longer as they rebuild for a new kernel, and I don't see that you need any in the QSI.

Kernel upgrades aren't automatic except for Liquorix kernels if you install their image and header metapackages.
MXPI = MX Package Installer
QSI = Quick System Info from menu
The MX Test repository is mostly backports; not the same as Debian testing

Wow ... OK re. AHS ...

So, do I first add this ...

Code: Select all

#ahs hardware stack repo
#deb http://mxrepo.com/mx/repo/ buster ahs
to this
/etc/apt/sources.list.d/mx.list
Open mx-repo-manager, go to the last tab, and enable the “ahs” repo.

Then do a “dist-upgrade”.

Then reboot.

Then go to MX Package Installer and check the most recent Liquorix and let it install - then reboot, again?
