KDE remote folder trouble - cant save a file to a remote folder

#1 Post by ar_ciscor »

Greetings!
I'm having a trouble with my fresh install of Mx Linux 23 - KDE

I've two PCs:
- one as a file server (via SMB) and printing server. All ok, i can reach the files in the shared folders and print from all my local devices (celphone, tablet, windows pc, etc.)
- the other, my workstation, can access the remote files and folders in the server (via Dolphin remote places), but I' cant save directly to a remote folder, they don't show up in any file browser of any app when i do "save to" or "save as" (as well when I try "open file" from the app, no from dolphin)

Anyone has the similar trouble?
Here goes some screenshots for clarification.

Thanks.

Spanish version:
Hola!

Muchas gracias.

Re: KDE remote folder trouble - cant save a file to a remote folder

#4 Post by ar_ciscor »

Well, I arrived to a partial solution.

In first place, from https://askubuntu.com/questions/1150404 ... ile-picker I tooked the "Permanent solution" way.

To make all apps launch with the environment variable set, create a KDE session environment variable (see KDE UserBase wiki for reference):

1. Make sure you have installed xdg-desktop-portal and xdg-desktop-portal-kde
2. Make sure the path $HOME/.config/plasma-workspace/env exists

Code: Select all

$ mkdir -p $HOME/.config/plasma-workspace/env
3. Create a new .sh file in the directory, with any name and the content export GTK_USE_PORTAL=1 KDE will execute any .sh script found in that directory on startup and maintain the environment variables set in them.

Code: Select all

$ echo "export GTK_USE_PORTAL=1" >> $HOME/.config/plasma-workspace/env/gtk_use_portal.sh
4. Reboot/Logout and login again[/i]

This solved the issue in a 80% of apps.

So, to achive a temporary solution for the other 20% of apps, needed to configure and run smb4k, for local folder mount an smb remote folder and then be able to access from any file picker / file chooser (gtk, qt, etc.).

Hope helps anyone in my situation.
=D

This is interesting. For me, smb4k does not work. I had tried it but not gotten any results.

So, its not that you cannot save, the issue is that you dont see the shared locations to save too?

I have a custom samba config, combined with a NAS maintaining master browser and then avahi as the link to tie it all together... but its not perfect and still needs a little work.

Glad you have found a solution!

I usually keep it very simple. The owner of the remote folder has the same login ID and password of the machine having the file copied from.
