Urgent help needed - graphical interface unresponsive when using Dell trackpad

#1 Post by monamtb »

Hi all,

I have been running KDE 21.1 as my productive system.
Today, all of a sudden, no more mouse actions would work.

Can't even open applications from the latte dock anymore, nor can I call up the menu when clicking on the menu button for shutdown.

Luckily know how to switch to a terminal via CTRL + ALT + F3, logged in as root, and typed shutdown - h.

After reboot the problem persists.
Can't use the trackpad, but most keyboard commands work.

Any idea what can be wrong?

Is it possible I used a keyboard combination that started this by accident??

Any help is greatly appreciated since I can't work with the system now.

Even logging in as root has the same issue with using the trackpad.

If it's a wireless mouse, replace the battery.
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

Or use a different mouse to rule out the mouse device.
Mixed of desktops and laptops, I have a Gravis Ultrasound Classic card (unfortunately its ISA-slot based) ... - I must be a dino. :popcorn:

I think that you should switch to a mouse, temporarily and then post your QSI (MX Tools --> Quick System Info).

Is the first mouse (not trackpad) a wired or wireless one using bluetooth or RF USB receiver? If it is wireless, remove the RF USB adapter, or wired mouse, and just check to see if the trackpad works normally. When I connect a wired mouse, my trackpad is disabled. If the trackpad is working fine when there are no other mice involved, then its something else.

If you have any bootable live media (no matter what Linux) boot with and make sure it's a hardware issue or not.

Great suggestion, Charlie
I had a PC Linux OS on a USB stick with KDE.

Same issue here while doing the live session.

Weird thing is, left click on the trackpad has no effect - right click works but when choosing a menu entry I have to use the TAB button to go through the menu because I can't choose them by using the trackpad mouse pointer.

Keyboard seems to work fine, but I can't start any applications accept for using keyboard keys.

Hi J2mcgreg,
I'll be darned....
Had a Logitech mouse lying around by chance - plugged it in - and now it works again fine....

Could it be that using legacy mode instead of UEFI mode causes these kind of problems???

Trackpad issues still persist - only the logitech mouse works - clicks on the trackpad have no effect.

@monamtb

Since you are using MX 21.3, you can go to MX Tweak --> Other tab and switch to the libinput driver and see if it gets your trackpad working again. Note that this option is no longer available in MX 23.
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.
