Whilst trying to resolve an openvpn issue I noticed MX Linux reports a much older version of openssl than an arch and ubuntu system I have access to.

OpenVPN is working fine on my MX image and as this is my main system I have no issues, what has puzzled me though is that if I ask openVPN for its version within the info it also reports openssl version.

Oddly MX openssl reports 1.1.1n whereas arch reports 3.1.1 and Ubuntu reports 3.0.2

I'm guessing that as MX reports 1.1.1 which appears well old that maybe it is merely reporting incorrectly although if I type version from the openssl> prompts that also shows 1.1.1n

To reiterate, no problems with MX, just wondering why the openssl version appears to old.

Re: Old version of OpenSSL  [Solved]

MX-21 is built on a debian bullseye base and uses debian bullseye repos. Debian bullseye packages which use openssl have been built against openssl 1.1.1 so if we upgrade it those packages won't work.
Debian does keep backporting the security patches to it until EOL so don't worry about security issues just because of the version.

Only to add that the recently released MX-23 has openssl (3.0.9-1) available

I'm suspecting it is the later openssl that may be causing my openvpn connection issues and as MX is working I'll stay with what I have for the moment.

Thanks for your reply and explanation.
