Brother MFC-J870DW

Hi Everyone,

I've been a Windows user all my life, and this is my first time ever using Linux. Please be patient with me as I'm just a 1 day old user, and need step by step instructions. I chose Linux MX because it was the only one among all available distros that configured my 2 laptops hardware without any issues. I installed on 2 very old laptops (Dell Inspiron 1501 with a 64 Bit AMD Sempron processor and a Dell Inspiron E1505 with a 32 Bit Intel Centrino processor ) the latest Xfce kernels 64 bit and 32 bit versions respectively. Both laptops recognized and print correctly to my Brother multi-function (Printer, scanner, fax and copier) network printer MFC-J870DW. However, neither of the 2 laptops have been able to recognize the scanner nor fax over the network.

I went to Brother support website for the printer (https://support.brother.com/g/b/downloa ... Dg0OTQyNjU.) and downloaded and installed (I just clicked on the downloaded file and followed the installation instructions) on the 64 big laptop the "Scanner driver 64bit (deb package)" V 12/21/2021 (0.4.11-1) and tried to scan with the Document Scanner app, but it didn't work. I then downloaded and installed the same way the "Scan-key-tool 64bit (deb package)" V 01/25/2021 (0.3.1-2), but it didn't work either.

I then installed gscan2pdf since I read somewhere in this forum to try that application, but it didn't work either.

I tried to follow the "How to Install" instructions at the Brother website for each driver despite I believe that MX installed them when I clicked on them, but anyway, I don't know how to execute them.

Can someone help me install the driver or software needed to scan and send faxes?

I would greatly appreciate your help.

I do normaly install brother related printer and scan-driver using a script mentioned in the MX Wiki MX Wiki - Brother which seems to work always for me.
Sometimes the brother provided printer driver do work better than the one's which maybe available with the system. In case it is network located printer/scanner, I found the most reliable way to have a fixed IP-address of the printer/scanner.
In case of USB-connected device the small number of tests I made with brother printer/scanner on USB seem all to work. I think I made some experiments with ScanKey to trigger the scan but as I not really need these function, didn't looked much into this, b/c I normal start the scan from MX Linux PC.
Also sending fax was something I didn't test much, b/c I prefer to send fax manually .

For scanner, installing the .deb driver is usually not enough. You then have to run some commands to point the driver to the location (IP address) of the scanner. The commands can be found in the the download page for the scanner driver of your Brother model.

Pay attention to the part addressing network users. Those are the commands to point the driver to the IP location of your scanner/MFC.

Thanks Fehlix for the reply! I tried to follow your Brother-Printer-Installer-Helper Script, but I wouldn't know what to do it or how to execute it. It's completely out of my league.
Anyway, I was able to install the printer and scanner following the simple instructions at the Brother's website for my printer, and voila! it work perfectly! And now I have them installed in both of my laptops (32 and 64 bits). Thank you again for your help! I greatly appreciate it!

asqwerth wrote: Wed Jul 05, 2023 12:23 am For scanner, installing the .deb driver is usually not enough. You then have to run some commands to point the driver to the location (IP address) of the scanner. The commands can be found in the the download page for the scanner driver of your Brother model.

Pay attention to the part addressing network users. Those are the commands to point the driver to the IP location of your scanner/MFC.
Thank you asqwrth for the guidance on installing the drivers. I was able to install the printer and scanner following the simple instructions at the Brother's website for my printer, and it indeed work flawlessly. Now I have them installed in both of my laptops (32 and 64 bits). Thank you again for your assistance! I greatly appreciate it!

Suggest open a new thread with details and a descriptive topic title

* QSI Quick System Info

* Printer Model

* Show printer settings (maybe capture printer settings window)

This is to avoid hijacking other users thread, which is already marked as solved.
Thanks
