Hi all,
I've done something and it's broken the package installer. When I try to install anything I get a message like this. In this case I am trying to install Strawberry. Any help would be happily received

E: rtl8821ce-dkms: installed rtl8821ce-dkms package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 10

We need your computer’s complete profile before we can proceed, so you need to post the output from the QSI utility. The Quick System Info (QSI) utility is located in MX Tools and its output is automatically formatted for use here in the forum. Run the QSI utility, click “Copy for Forum” at the bottom and then just paste it here in your thread.

It may be that your main repository is not as up to date as it should be. You can use Repo Manager in MX Tools to switch to Alblasserdam, The Netherlands which is the closest one to the UK which is owned and operated by the MX Team. After the switch, reboot or log out/ login, update and retry installing that package.

I tried that and I re-set to the original APT sources just in case that helped but seems that I have a bigger issue.

You can try fixing the broken packages with Synaptic : Edit --> Fix Broken Packages

It also may be that your use of an Ubuntu ppa in the past has irreparably harmed your system. Other than that both are Linux distros and both use the apt packaging system, there are no other commonalities between the two. We advise our users to refrain from accessing ppas because of the potential harm they can cause.

Thanks for your help. But Fix Broken Packages didn't do anything. The screen flashed for a split second, but nothing happened.

I am not sure what a ppa is, so if I have used one, it wasn't intentional.

A ppa is a Personal Package Archive. When you use apt, the areas / locations where software is loaded from. There is a kubuntu ppa in one of your repos, so that is probably what is being referred too. You should make sure that is disabled in the MX Repos .

To clean up broken packages, try these, one at a time in a terminal.

Code: Select all

sudo apt update --fix-missing
Then

Code: Select all

sudo apt update
and try to install what you were after.

If it still is not working, then try

Code: Select all

sudo apt install --fix-broken
and try then update and try to install again.

From your QSI:

Code: Select all

No active apt repos in: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/kubuntu-ppa-ubuntu-backports-mantic.list
Do you remember how you obtained that package? It easily could be the broken one.

Hmm, I tried installing Amarok from their website, so that might be the reason. It didn't install so I just moved on to another music player.

I tried the clean options but they didn't make a difference.
