Chrome hogs default browser

#1 Post by Aronticuz »

Background
new computer, new install of MX21 on internal SSD and an irregular patter of behaviour noticed.

Reported behaviour
KDE Plasma reports my chosen app for Web browser as LibreWolf but Google Chrome starts up instead of LibreWolf
KDE Plasma > Personalization > Applications > Default Applications > Web Browser > LibreWolf

So if I type a URL in LibreOffice Writer > writer applies the URL formatting Ctrl+click on the Writer link > website opens in LibreWolf
On the other hand in wxMaxima > Help > wxMaxima help > opens in Google Chrome
Also in wxMaxima > Help > Maxima help > opens in Google Chrome

QSI and attached

I have the same answer here as I do for your other thread:
https://forum.mxlinux.org/viewtopic.php ... 25#p722525

Install a liquorix kernel. You may have to experiment a bit to find which one suits your machine the best because your machine is about six months newer than my HP 15. After installing the new kernel, reboot and see how many of these ancillary problems have also disappeared. I can say, with all honesty, that my HP 15 was unusable before installing the new kernel and that I had temporarily reverted to Win 11.

Reason: missing upper case letter
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

Big thanks @j2mcgreg yoo da man dude!

EDIT: as a ps: another anomaly just encountered is ... (expecting the wrath of a moderator any time soon) ... is:
Hibernation:
(A) computer power switch > select Hibernate > it goes into hibernation with a black screen
(B) Meta or mouse click > Power?Session > Hibernate goes through the usual usuals until a second or two before power down when an image of the desktop appears on screen momentarily before the power light goes off.
I guess these are kernel related too?
(but reporting here just in case ... relative newbie to MX n all that)

Well this moderator doesn't see anything wrong as it is a continuation of the problems that you have so far encountered. In this case though, I suspect it's a bug in the hibernation program because it's been reported by other users.

Ah - I will not report it f there is prior knowledge ... on the other hand ... bit the bullet ... took the plunge .... started 6.2.9-4 liquorix ... systemd ... it seems a bit whizzy

Ummm...did the Liquorix kernel fix the default browser issue? Because I have my doubts that it could have--seems more like it's a desktop environment-type problem, maybe restricted to wxmaxima?
MXPI = MX Package Installer
QSI = Quick System Info from menu
The MX Test repository is mostly backports; not the same as Debian testing

Thank you my friend .. it does look like a Maxima wxMaxima sorta thing
The behavior carried over to 6.2.9 - maybe maxima has specified Chrome somewhere in its code?

Cannot seem to find the NumLock key setting to turn it on - was sure it was in MX Tweak but ...

Oh - installed the kernel, version 6.2-12~mx21+1 and opted for Also Install "Recommended" Packages (forget to note what they were)

Ah - I will not report it f there is prior knowledge ... on the other hand ... bit the bullet ... took the plunge .... started 6.2.9-4 liquorix ... systemd ... it seems a bit whizzy
Try it without SystemD to see if there .is any improvement
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

Chrome still fired up and KDE Plasma still shows LibreWolf as default browser - again it isn't really a problem as I do use both browsers as and when needed.

On the other hand I think I will run with non-System D option - it seems so damn quick!

QSI non-Systemd

Thanks to everyone who responded (and to moderators everywhere for their ever enduring patience)
I'll class this as solved as it seems related to Maxima and wxMaxima and, tbf it was offered as on a FYI basis.
something like that could mean a lot to someone somewhere
