Additional steps needed to allow install of MX on a new Win 11 computer

#1 Post by j2mcgreg »

With Windows 11, Microsoft has added a couple of hurdles to make installing MX on your new rig a bit more difficult. Here's what you have to do now to prepare for the install.
1. Set up Windows 11 as minimally as possible, but do create a Microsoft account if you don’t already have one.
2. Log into your Microsoft account and locate the Bitlocker key. Write it down or print it out
3. Disable Fast Boot
4. Turn off Bitlocker. If this goes awry, you will need the key from step #2 in order to proceed. You may also need the key if you try to disable Secure Boot before
you turn off Bitlocker.
5. Access the computer’s bios and disable Secure Boot. Note: on some computers, you have to create an Administrator’s password in order to access this control.
6. Adjust the boot order to give priority to your USB drive
7. Reboot
Now proceed with the install as normal.

HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

I think it would be a good idea to get this into the documentation somewhere. User Manual or Wiki.

So much for technology making life easier. Thank you for posting on how to remove the Spyware/Malware known as Windows 11.
I am command line illiterate. I copy & paste to the terminal. Liars, Wiseguys, Trolls, and those without manners will be added to my ignore list.

Maybe that should be the MX Linux slogan? How is: "Removing Windows spyware worldwide!"

I was just joking, really! Someone in another thread had suggested "It just works!" but that one also falls short IMHO.

A quick expansion & correction on one of your points: 3. Disable Fast Startup in Windows AND Fast Boot in the PC motherboard BIOS/Firmware.

The best explanation I've found [no source attribution, sorry] of Fast Boot:
What is Fast Boot in BIOS? Fast Boot reduces your PC's boot time. With Fast Boot enabled: Boot from Network, Optical, and Removable Devices are disabled. Video and USB devices (keyboard, mouse, drives) will NOT be available until the operating system loads.
This post and responses jogged my memory of my starting the writing of this topic's guide in December 2021. Life intervened with my wife being hospitalized twice pausing a good portion of my free time fiddlings. I did finish a guide for Adblock and posted it to the MX facebook group just before she got sick.

I had totally lost track of my "Dual Boot - Linux & Windows on a PC together" guide and this past November started on "MX Linux and Windows file sharing" guide after a recent (Nov '22) discussion in the MX facebook group and later here. Coincidentally both printed out are 7 pages but the "Dual Boot - Linux & Windows on a PC together" will be much larger as I have placeholders (Image-insert – DiskManager-01.png) for pictures (done in a file folder) to reduce ink usage.

I'm more than willing to share either as a Doc/PDF with the MX Dev's or their designated reviewers, just not publicly as replacing early copies with finished works is impossible on the internet. The Adblock guide is in the MX facebook group's files section.
