A thank you

#1 Post by Steve »

I would like to thank all of you for your help over the last year. @AV_Linux_MX_2022 you taught me to ‘fish’ and some of how the sound system works👍🏻
To all those who tried to help my sometimes foggy mind…thank you.
And all the MX team that makes it happen :number1:
Moving to Debian. More kiss (keep it simple stupid) less welding😳 No x runs no odd noises occasionally.

Hi @Steve, and in my case anyway you are quite welcome and your support has been very much appreciated!

You have identified something that quite often happens when trying to make things work for 'everybody'... they don't always work better in individual cases.. AV Linux is MX with some extra welding and a lot of duct tape and chewing gum and it's efforts to get people on the road to production often mean there is a lot of stuff that one person may use and another may not so I completely understand and agree with your assessment that once you get what you need figured out then you get to a point where you know your needs better than anyone else and can do your own thing. Even my own personal ideal system would not really resemble what AV Linux has become over many years, all the best with Debian and of course we'd love to see and hear what you're up to!

*A final note, once PipeWire has fully matured and seen a lot of testing I hope there will be no difference between MX and AVL on the Audio side, in fact I think MX with a good PipeWire setup, the added Multimedia Packages and continued access to Liquorix kernels will make AV Linux unnecessary and hopefully my role will simply be as a User with multimedia experience and perhaps the Enlightenment spin if I get it tamed...

I hope you keep doing AV Linux, but if you get tired of that, or consider that it's a chore, and if indeed it's going to be easy to set up MX to do whatever AV is doing I suggest looking into adding an entry to MX Package Installer, you could probably have an "AV Linux mods" or something like that, that in one "install" click could install all the extra apps you want to install (you might need to make sure all the required apps are in the repo), including desired kernel, and also apply your desired setting. MX Package Installer is pretty flexible, you can set a Pre-install stage where you can enable repos for example or download .debs from some URLs, then install the packages and have a number of commands that you can run in Post-Install... see the .pm files in /usr/share/mx-packageinstaller-pkglist/ for inspiration.

I have a handful of scripted utilities (mostly yad stuff) that I should get onto a github page and eventually into MX Packages (or as you noted a dedicated Repo) and that would also close a lot of gaps, I need to put a lot of thought into it before making any big changes. I just think as both projects get more in common there is less need for duplication and I don't care or need my name in lights, if MX is 90% of it my name is fine print anyway...lol. Might as well be 100% MX but I've needed to work through the process and get experienced with how you guys roll and you roll so well I'm not really needed all that much and that's a good thing, unity is always better than fragmentation IMHO. A big hurdle was the need for a specialized JACK Audio setup and if PipeWire does what it says on the can that hurdle will be removed..
