Windows 11 Pro dual boot

#1 Post by chrispop99 »

Machines supplied with Windows 11 Pro usually have BitLocker set by default. (This is a technology that encrypts the boot drive.) If intending to dual boot MX Linux with Windows, Fast Boot must be turned off from within Windows, then Secure Boot must be disabled in the BIOS. However, when exiting the BIOS, the machine will reboot to a screen requiring a recovery key. This will be sent to your Microsoft account. If you hadn't set one up, you can't continue to boot.
To avoid this, before disabling Secure Boot, in Windows right-click the boot drive, select More Options, then turn BitLocker off. It will take a while to decrypt the drive. You can then go to the BIOS, turn Secure Boot off, and the machine will boot OK.
Note that this will reduce Windows security as the drive will no longer be encrypted
Tested with a Dell XPS 15 9500.
