I am planning to move away from windows to linux and have found the MX linux to be the most suitable for my needs so far. However I am new to modern linux distros and to test compatibility by running live on a HP EliteDesk 705 G4 Mini Desktop AMD Ryzen 5 Pro 2400GE have been unsuccessful. I disabled the HP secure boot and and enabled legacy boot with uefi. The machine goes through the boot process ok and I get the loading screen with the progressive dots and then a blank screen. The only video option is via display ports that I have connected to a display port capable display that shows the boot display so is working ok. Anybody had success with these machines and if so what do I need to do to enable video?

You don't "have to" use Legacy , both are fine, whichever you like: Legacy/Uefi ..

Can you access the Welcome Screen ?

If yes: type nomodeset in the "Boot Options" are after others (you can even change them all to this: quiet nosplash nomodeset ) ... then press Enter to go on.

In the meantime: The AHS version may be better:

MX-21.2_x64 “ahs”, an “Advanced Hardware Support” release for very recent hardware, with 5.16 kernel and newer graphics drivers and firmware. 64 bit only. Works for all users, but especially if you use AMD Ryzen, AMD Radeon RX graphics, or 9th/10th/11th generation Intel hardware.

Just btw: @Jerry3904 the "5.16" part may need editing at https://mxlinux.org/download-links/ :)

Here's a possible solution from the Linux Mint forums:

OK downloading the ahs version now. Will try this and see how I get on. Thanks for the quick help. I used to run linux 10 years ago but have been on windows since due to required software. Retired now so free to ditch windows.

Ok, first try to boot as always (without nomodeset etc.) , if still not, then try with nomodeset.

If you're using Windows: Rufus is the recommended one to write the iso.

In case you're able to access the desktop only with nomodeset you can go on and install. Then on the installed system "Quick System Info" from Menu.

It's nice to hear you were able to install and boot.

Assuming you already tested the mouse on another machine (batteries are full and it works etc):

When it's attached:

Code: Select all

lsusb
(It may be considering/seeing that as a flash drive)

Btw: If you still have Windows: Don't forget to disable "Fast Startup" there (as it's not a real shutdown, it keeps devices engaged)
