Firefox does no more start after upgrade to v103
Firefox does no more start after upgrade to v103
on 2022-08-08 I made the automatic update of MX-Linux 19.4.
Then firefox, which has been upgraded to v103, did no more start. When hitting the side icon for firefox, the mousecursor turns to waiting rotation and after maybe 30s turns to normal; no firefox and no error message does appear, just nothing happens.
I made deinstall and reinstall of firefox, same result.
I could reproduce that behaviour by a complete setup:
I made a complete new setup of the machine, using liveUSB on my USB-stick made in Sept. 2021, deleting partitions on hdd, formatting, installing that old mx-linux.
result: firefox on hdd did work, probably version 87, like on liveUSB
I made the big update from sept. 2021 to now, 305 objects to be updated, including firefox v103 (103.0.2~mozillabinaries-1mx19+1), then firefox did no more start, behaviour same as described above.
If there is no better idea, I will wait for another firefox version and try that. In the meantime I use my liveUSB. Thank you for building a live system which runs from USB; that helps a lot.

Re: Firefox does no more start after upgrade to v103
Did you re-use your old 'home' partition when you reinstalled? If so, there is a hidden file in there named .mozilla. Rename that, then see if Firefox starts.
Note that any configuration changes you may have made will be lost. If it doesn't fix things, delete the new .mozilla folder that will have been created, and restore the old one to its original name.

Re: Firefox does no more start after upgrade to v103
Hello, Stephan.
As I run MX Linux 19.4 and Firefox 103.0.2 here without experiencing any Firefox start problems, I cannot imagine that Firefox 103.0.2 as such is incompatible with MX Linux 19.4.
Please, open a terminal window.
Type firefox and press the enter key.
The messages, which will be displayed inside the terminal window, might be interesting and tell why on your MX Linux 19.4 system Firefox does not come up.
Please, mark all messages, displayed by the command firefox in the terminal window and share them with us.
Thank you. And regards,
Karl

Thank you all for your answers. Here are more details:

when I made the setup of the machine I removed all partitions, nothing was left. However I had problems with installing, as the progress was either very very slow (it seemed to stop at 7%, an hour later still 7%) or it did hang complete). I finally succeded after changing the liveUSB system to german and doing some work using firefox and others on liveUSB; then the next try to install on hdd was successful. FWIW mx19 is june 2026. mx17/18 was june 2022, and just ended.

Re: Firefox does no more start after upgrade to v103
The reason I thought 19.4 would have been desupported on june 2022, is the welcome mini tool. Looks like it is not actual and needs an update. See screenshot.dolphin_oracle wrote: Mon Aug 15, 2022 9:53 pm FWIW mx19 is june 2026. mx17/18 was june 2022, and just ended.
