Install fluxgui

New to MX Linux. Using 21.1 on a Win7 32 bit machine and for life of me can't work out how to install fluxgui.

Understand that PPA approach a non-starter and without systemd boot option not possible to install Snap store so that approach is out now, too.

Is there another approach that will work that is relatively simple?

Did try Redshift but even with Geoclue also installed could not get location coordinates populated so a no luck so far. In any case, much prefer F.lux which I have been using on Windows for years.

Any help much appreciated. Thank you.

Till then: Have you tried sct ? It's used manually but so simple, light and does the job..

MX Linux has the capability of booting using systemd. Select Advanced Options from the GRUB screen.

Meanwhile, (though this is MX 19 at the moment) it's already in Stable Repo, no need to ppa etc.

Code: Select all

$ apt list flux*i
Listing... Done
fluxgui/mx 1.2.1~git20190816-1~mx19+1 all
Edit: On MX21 it doesn't look available. So maybe Admins change this thread into "Package Requests" for MX21 ...

On the website I read this:
Fluxgui doesn't work on most modern systems, and there are no plans to fix it.
BTW: the README has elaborate installation instructions if you haven't looked at it yet.

Thank you for the replies.

1. sct sounds like a good alternative. Can you provide more details about how to use it?

2. It seems that systemd is no longer in the advanced options for 21.1.

3. Couldn't make much sense of the README, but thanks. I may be in over my head here.

Not sure if it is relevant but am using MX from a live USB with persistence.

You can install sct no matter you use it or not, it's so small and won't be running in the background all the time:

Installed-Size: 22.5 kB
Download-Size: 6,438 B

Description: Set screen color temperature
sct is a small C program to change the screen color temperature. It can be used to reduce or increase the amount of blue light produced by the screen. sct sets the color temperature of the screen via xrandr like redshift. Unlike redshift, it is only 80 lines of C and will not change the screen temperature automatically.

Code: Select all

sudo apt update ; sudo apt install sct -y
You can first try from terminal , i.e.

Code: Select all

sct 2400
to reset to normal, just :

Code: Select all

sct
You can assign key(s) from "Keyboard" (I did so)

say, F8 for the command sct 2000 , just hit your key

and another key (say F7 or F8 +Esc or whatever .. but single keys will make it even simpler) to reset to normal: command only sct )

_______________________________

Also Fluxbox users can do it in ~/.fluxbox/keys :

i.e.

Code: Select all

#Screen to night mode
Control F1 :Exec sct 2000

#Screen to day mode (reset)
Control Escape :Exec sct

Meanwhile, this may be useful: https://iristech.co/what-is-the-best-color-temperature/

P.S. You can also create launchers/icons with those commands and put to desktop / panel and just click.. for a few values If you like and one to reset ...

Brilliant! Thank you. Just tried it on a test Linux Mint USB live install and it worked as advertised so assume it will work on MX, too.

Stlll love F.lux's functionality but life is short so unless there is an easy way to install on MX think I will just use sct.

Much obliged for your help.

I'm a bit concerned by your statement that systemd boot isn't available in Advanced Options (from your Grub boot menu) on your MX system. That sounds really off.

Please post your Quick system info, which you can find in Applications Menu or MX Tools window.

Is this what you mean? I may have it completely wrong but pretty sure there isn't a systemd boot option in the Advanced Options in the Grub boot menu. I seem to remember reading somewhere that systemd support was dropped in 21.1.

FWIW, I am booting from a live USB with persistence.

Curious to learn what you make of this.

Thank you.

Nope. Just, no systemd on live-session. :)
