Vivaldi problem — can I pin a version to prevent update? [Double Solved!]  [Solved]

I don't know if this is an issue for anyone else, but I found that, after the latest round of upgrades, Vivaldi browser kept crashing. It may be connected to the Startpage app (Web Search), but this happened in both the current vivaldi-stable (5.2.2623.34-1) and vivaldi-snapshot (5.3.2643.3-1). It started whenever I closed a Startpage tab (with a segmentation fault), and it segfaulted when I ran it again, even after a reboot, though just before it crashed I could see that the Startpage tabs were still there. It didn't happen when I opened it in incognito mode (presumably because then it opens without any saved tabs). I went to the Vivaldi site and downloaded the previous version (5.2.2623.26-1), and installed that, after deleting both the later versions, and I was able to close all the Startpage tabs without incident, though I can't say for sure if that is the issue.

My immediate reaction is that I want to pin the current version I have of Vivaldi to prevent any updates until such time that I am happy the problem is resolved. Is there a way of doing that?

This all happened in MX21.1-AHS-XFCE. It did not happen in my KDE version because I hadn't done the full update yet, and when I did, I unchecked Vivaldi-stable in Synaptic. I will provide the QSI if needed, but I think this is a Vivaldi problem, not an MX or Hardware problem.

i have heard of doing such a thing with apt-mark hold, but it might be a good idea to wait and see if a developer or packager has a better (possibly more mx-specific?) idea.

editing to add: in Synaptic Package Manager under the Package tab i see an option to Lock Version.

Synaptic has that option. Other than that, to prevent anything being included in updates, the terminal command is:

sudo apt-mark hold package_name

(package_name in this case would be vivaldi). If you want to resume updates, do:

sudo apt-mark unhold package_name

hello davemx
you are using synaptic,
in its menu bar "Settings > Repositories" a window will open "Repositories."
uncheck the box next to the entry repo.vivaldi.com until a time you decide to upgrade vivaldi, then recheck the box when you are ready for upgrade vivaldi.
uncheck the box, "OK", "Reload"

unmarking the box for the vivaldi upgrade worked for you once; you can continue to do that, or uncheck the repo.vivaldi repository. Both methods will afford vivaldi no upgrade.

I will use the apt-mark hold method. I only used synaptic on this occasion because I knew it had an option to manually cancel an individual update. But thanks!

Brilliant! The package name is actually vivaldi-stable, but that worked!

I've saved the deb file for the version I have working, in a safe folder. So if I decide to upgrade and get the same problem, I can uninstall it, and re-install the one that works!

Double solved! Looks as if there's another build, 5.2.2623.36-1, and the issue has been fixed!

@davemx Yes, vivaldi-stable, my bad. By the way, there's also a snapshot version. I remember when I used to have stable Vivaldi as my default browser, there were problems with a certain version, so I additionally installed the snapshot which worked fine. The deb file can be downloaded from

https://vivaldi.com/blog/desktop/lots-o ... ot-2643-3/

I used to like Vivaldi for the endless way the UI can be customized, but it feels as if the whole thing is getting more and more bloated now, they seem to build into it everything but the kitchen sink and for me, it takes quite a while initially starting up. Currently, I am a LibreWolf guy :-)

The snapshot was also available in Synaptic. I did try that, with the same problem (see first post in this thread). I guess they may have fixed that also by now, but I'm happy if the Stable one is working. There are almost too many features in Vivaldi, but my reason for using it is the side panel. I've tried other browsers with side panels, but last time I checked, Vivaldi was the only one that did what I wanted it to!

Ah okay, hadn't realized snapshot is in the repos. I remember Vivaldi's downloads side panel which I found useful. Firefox had something similar too, as an extension, until the latest browser upgrade which brought us what was billed as download dialogs which would speed up the workflow. In fact, they achieve the opposite (though fortunately there are ways round that). But the useful downloads sidebar addon is no longer to be had, presumably because it doesn't work with whatever changes have been made by Firefox to implement their latest "improvements".

I do wish browser devs would not constantly change stuff that works perfectly fine, make it work less well, and then insist it represents vast progress :-)
