Can we spoof distro for running some specific launchers?

#1 Post by shenkun »

Hey,

So recently I have to appear for an online test and I am on Mx Linux. But the test launcher explicitly wants Ubuntu 14, 16 or 18.. Ugh all 3 out of support. I don't want to install or liveboot Ubuntu for running it now. So, is there any way that I can spoof my Linux distro so the launcher would think I am using a Ubuntu instead of Mx Linux..

I tried searching it online but it feels this is first of it;s kind..

Install VirtualBox (MX Package Installer, Popular Applications, Misc) then install Ubuntu in a virtual machine.

Ubuntu 18.04 is still supported, as far as I know.

You might be able to spoof the OS, but without knowing exactly what the test launcher is reading, good luck with that.

My pc is pretty beat up handle a VM. I will liveboot the distro if nothing works.

How much RAM does it have? And how much free disk space?

Also, is it a proctored exam? If so they're probably not going to allow you to run Ubuntu in a VM because for all they know you could be looking up the answers in MX or something, so you'd have to either run Ubuntu on a live USB or back up MX, create a personal snapshot, then install Ubuntu temporarily and put MX back when you're finished.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure they'd find out if you're not using Ubuntu and I don't know of a way to safely "spoof" Ubuntu on MX as I think it would entail installing Ubuntu's kernel at the very least, which would mean installing their repos, which would totally hose your MX installation. They may also tell you to install packages/versions that Ubuntu has and MX/Debian don't.
