Boot your laptop and on the Grub2 screen select and run Memtest. Your graphics card utilizes a portion of your installed ram and it may be that some of that ram is failing. You will have to run Memtest for several hours to get a decent result. Ram usually fails a bit at a time, rather than going kaput at once. The sporadic nature of this problem could be a situation where the ram controller sometimes can sometimes circuit around the problem area while at other times it can't. Anybody who has run a live session from a DVD will have noticed that the panel and Thunar load in advance of the main screen. In your case I believe that there is always sufficient good ram to fully launch those items, but sporadically not enough to launch the main screen component.
