Drivers for hardware that is 20 years old (or more)
Why do these need the latest software or distro? It is not like they are usable on the internet, so what is the security risk of using an older release?

I have a ThinkPad that uses one of those drivers, it was slow but usable 12 years ago but now? (I keep it because it was given to me by a friend who has since died)

Shiny New Stuff Syndrome, not just for hardware.
