antiX Advert Blocker

#1 Post by figueroa »

This is a post about the included sources for advertisers to block via the /etc/hosts file found in the antiX Advert Blocker found in the MX Package Installer's Popular Applicatons (where it is named Advert-Block-antiX). When running the application one can choose between the following:

mvps.org
someonewhocares.org
yoho.org
adservers.org
UNBLOCK

I was able to find https://someonewhocares.org/hosts/

DuckDuckGo led me to http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.htm, though the file there does not match by about 1000 lines.

I found https://pgl.yoyo.org/adservers/, and the list there matches closely but not identical.

I'm obviously not going to find anything under adservers.org though in antiX Advert Blocker this is by far the longest list by thousands of lines.

Then, I found the script at /usr/local/bin/block-advert.sh

Studying the script confirmed the first three sources, and revealed the adservers.org source to actually be https://hosts-file.net/

I'm seeking to learn, thankful for this script which is obviously still being maintained, but suggest that the script could provide a little more transparency in the GUI regarding the sources.I am using it, and I'm using the generated /etc/hosts file from MX in my heavily used Gentoo desktop. Happy user.
