MX Running Windows in a VM

#1 Post by TheLamerLinux »

So I'm taking a college class that is require and that is a Windows 10 OS class...

One of the requirements that you HAVE to use Windows and have it installed on your computer... So I somewhat did that lol.

This is the closes I'm putting Windows on my college laptop. I'm not getting rid of my beautiful MX Linux just for an 8 week online class.

But I didn't want just have a Windows wallpaper, of course I want my MX branding lol.

So here is the screenshot of my college/main laptop and my Windows 10 setup. Hope y'all love it :)

I took a mandatory "computer literacy" class that requires Windows® and ended up borrowing a laptop just to get the stupid class done. But I was put off by the requirement, which simply excludes Mac, Linux, and BSD and locks everyone into using a single vendor. That's not computer literacy, that's just Windows® literacy.

But when you think about it logically..

"please click alt 0254 to obtain this letter"

That just doesn't work on all systems.

My point? A teacher cannot teach properly if everyone is using a different computer. Basically the same as when in school everyone had to have the same book, print version and all.

I love it. I have to use Windows software now and then for professional reasons, and currently use a W10 laptop (dual with MX) for that. But it would be a lot easier to just fire up a VM. What did you use for an install medium?
Production: MX-23 Xfce, AMD FX-4130 Quad-Core, GeForce GT 630/PCIe/SSE2, 16 GB, SSD 120 GB, Data 1TB
Personal: MX-25 Fluxbox, ThinkPad X1 Carbon gen 9 with i7
Other: Raspberry Pi 5 with MX-23 Xfce Raspberry Pi Respin

I used just Windows 10 Home x64 installation. I also went to turn some animations off to make the VM run smooth and used an offline account.

I made the VM dual core with 4GB of ram I only got 8GB in this laptop

I've been doing the Win in VBox thing for years, Win7, Win10 and sundry others. Genealogy software you know...

As for Windows install media to use in VBox, @Jerry3904, MS provides...

I'm doing this atm (unsuccessfully so far), is/was there a walkthough you used to create the windows VM? Like Jerry I’ve always dual booted before, so a known good guide would be really comforting.

Thanks,
Michael
