As 2019 arrives, I thought it might be fun to guess what it might bring.

Remember to stay away from "inflammatory topics." :bagoverhead:

Well, I know I am finishing 2018 as a convert from Debian Stretch to it's offspring, MX Linux. I reckon in 2019, MX Linux will be my "go to" system.

The 2019 will end with MX 18 as the most used distribution and with the most stylized MX 19.

I personally will try my hand at building a children's educational/ learning platform (using MX18+). My target is grades K to 5 (in the US).

Excellent! I am always surprised at the lack of civic and historical knowledge that many of our youth have, Not only elementary and high school students but college graduates as well. Don't they read?

2019.. it will change my whole life around. My two years sick leave will end and I will get the boot, and then some disability stuff will have to kick in. I will still get loads of tests, maybe knee braces added to my collection, and I hope not, but if there are a few more stupid doctors out there that know diddly about EDS and manipulate my joints too far there might even be a wheelchair in my future. *rolls eyes* Not if I can help it though! Too bad you can't smack ignoramuses.

On the plus side MX will continue, I will continue to be here and will still annoy everyone online like I have always done. I will hopefully publish my first book, I hope to have my granny for another year (she'll be 94 come January) and maybe I will have been able to build myself a whole new computer. :smile:

Definitely will!

I'm sure I'll be around with questions when the time comes.. mostly like: is this supported ootb in Linux? And.. which of these two should I get on this hardware?

:laugh: It's going to be interesting. My mate used to help me with this.

@richb
Why should people bother learning to read, write coherent sentences, or communicate directly when they can txt... IMHO & FWIW :p

@Eadwine Rose
I wish you well, healthwise especially. My dad turns 90 in March. It is great having members of their generation to keep us honest. ;)

If I have time, I will do what I have not done since 15 years, "to give a little something to the free software community" (a common phrase in Arch Linux).

A minimal Gnome spin with MX tools, Thunar and other MX 18 apps. Based on Buster (gnome 3.30). Currently works fine with 800 upgraded (stretch to buster) packages, 600 more to test. :) This may also help MX tool development (such as MX Snapshot and MX Boot Options which need upgrade in coming 18.1) and general upgrade from stretch to buster. Currently when upgrading the libsystemd0, it removes the whole gnome-shell, which Xfce users may like. :)

Happy new year 2019

We don't use that word here. We are Beaver fans, not Duck fans.
Just a little rivalry.

MX becomes top distro on Distrowatch and stays there. Debian stays near the top also. Ubuntu sells to Microsoft and Mint is thrown in crisis until they go full Debian base. Tech companies will continue to invade our lives. Video Streaming overtakes Cable and Satellite TV.

@eadwine rose.. like you I hope to complete my first book in 2019. Unlike yours, mine is 'somewhat less than serious'. It is about a cow... a magical cow. It is never too late to have a good childhood. :hmm:

Definitely not! Go for it :)

I am in the proofreading stage right now. I have printed the thing (over 100 pages of A4) and am removing the dumbass stuff. Really... you don't see that when reading off a screen :laugh:

:popcorn: There are a zillion and twelve Ubuntu-based distros that would all have to switch to a Debian base. That would be a good thing! But I have to admit, I like Ubu's installer a lot better, maybe it will finally find it's way UPstream and make Debian-based distros a whole bunch easier to install!

I wonder if your last prediction hasn't already come true! Except for rural areas, perhaps, where some of us have to rely on satellite Internet and some are even still using dial-up (just for e-mail since it takes hours to load a single web page at 14.4 anymore).

My predictions?
  • School will get easier but not better.
  • More families will home school their kids - harder, but better.
  • Technology will get scarier and more threatening, more people will go off the grid in vain attempts to escape it.
  • Eadwine Rose's new book will become a classic and be made into a movie! :clap:

Now that Dell is going public, and ubuntu is going public later in 2019, I think any absorption of Ubuntu will 'more likely' be by Dell. That will put them in a better competitive position with IBM/RedHat/CentOS/Fedora. Although Jeff Bezos may decide his cloud business -AWS (a big user of ubuntu) needs to have ubuntu in Amazon's suite of companies (and perhaps they'll merge Ubuntu with Whole Foods). :lipsrsealed:

As for Microsoft, I think they'll swallow Oracle (the other "Open Source Company") :eek:

I hope 5g changes things for rural folks. We have 2 Internet options living in town, but outside of town people are stuck with dial-up :(
Vanilla Debian installer is kind of horrible. I had it fail on me doing an install recently at the end of the process. It needs completely overhauled or just replaced with a simpler version.
I have heard Direct TV will be moving away from satellite and going completely over the top with Internet and a streaming box in the near future for their service. They already have Direct TV Now for over the top streaming.
Agree that technology will get scarier.
And I want to see the movie based upon Eadwine Rose's book :)
