It looks like a good replacement.

One of its benefits over Skype is it is far more secure.

Methinks uTox could be a useful open source addition to MX Linux, and it wouldn't add bloat.

Asking because back last Fall, I tested both; each had separate merits / strong points. (I would have been unable to choose one over the other.)

Some times ago i read that Jitsi can be Linux replacement of Skype.

Jitsi is in our repos and that's what we recommend in the Users Manual based on forum feedback about alternatives to Skype. I have intended for a long time to test it with a Skype user, and will get to it in the next couple of days.

Just now (on 3rd July) made two video calls with my skype 4.3.0.37-1 : no problems.
What is the truth?

Hrm.. figured I'd give it a go.. and it's (4.3.0.37) running like normal. Haven't made a call yet, but I am pretty sure that will work as well.

Oops, I seem to have created a bit of a kerfuffle.

Last week I was listening to a talk radio show and someone phoned in and heaped praise on Tox after mentioning that Skype was being discontinued on Linux. I simply thought I'd give Tox a mention as its uTox client is ultra lightweight.

https://tox.chat/clients.html µTox is the lightweight client with minimal dependencies; it not only looks pretty, it runs fast!

I haven't tried it, I simply thought it might be a useful addition to the repositories.

No kerfuffle at all, people just trying to understand the situation. The 4.3 Skype had lots of problems for lots of people.

Bottom line, if you want it to work, uTox. If you want it to be pretty, and don't mind installing a lot of other dependencies, qTox is actually a good client too.

qTox is the pretty sister with issues, uTox is the smart sister that moved out first.

I noticed that Skype now has a browser app - https://web.skype.com/en/. thereby bypassing the need for a o/s specific app.

I have not used the web app since I very seldom have had the need for skype so maybe someone else can comment on whether it works or not.

I also found a product called Wire, which works for a friend who refuses to use Microsoft products. Wire has all o/s desktop apps including linux (debian rep., ubuntu, and AppImage) as well as a web app! The URL is https://wire.com/en/. So far we are using it without issues but since I use Skype seldom and wire not too often I cannot say if one is better than the other.

I have the browser extension in Google Chrome but never had occasion to use it, do not even have an account. If someone wants to try it PM me with details of your contact info and I will activate an account and we can give it a test run.

I looked at that a couple of days ago, but no video was available. Didn't spend much time on it so maybe I missed something

i use wire every day both with my computer and my android smartphone. i am very happy with it and i surely recommend it for varius reasons. moreover you can use it through rambox http://rambox.pro/ if you want. i suggest to check rambox too.

i think that those people who made wire worked before for skype
one of my contacts is an iphone user and some contacts windows users. that means you can communicate with everyone with end to end cryptography (and they made it available before viber and whatsapp)

You're perfectly right about us needing a proper alternative to Skype, and IMHO it would absolutely be worth testing both µTox and qTox. Wow, both of them even feature audio and video conferencing, and are available for a number of platforms - that's really cool!

I'd be happy to test both of them once they are available in the MX Test Repo.

Just noticed that qtox v1.6.0-obs is available in MX-17. Hope that helps.

Installed and started nicely after I fully updated MX-17, including everything from MX-17's Test Repo. Looks like a nice piece of truly Free/Libre Open Source Software.

Might very well be worth testing it. Nice feature is that it relies on a peer-to-peer kind of infrastructure. Means that when, e.g. in case of a natural disaster (like here: https://mxlinux.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=43034), in case part of the internet is down, one might still have some chance of calling for emergency services' help in some way. Big advantage in reliability, for company use also.

Second advantage is that there seem to be no central servers necessary. Big advantage towards Skype AFAIK. To my knowledge, when Skype servers break down, you are all lost. (I might be wrong in this respect.)

Anyone tried qtox out with another user?
