System Tray Icon Size

Posted: Tue Apr 11, 2023 2:41 pm
by richb
In MX Tweak System Tray icon size appears to have no affect. A native Plasma setting on the systray has a small icon setting or size with panel height that does work. Actually this was the same on MX 21

Widget sensors do not display. Individual Core Usage, Total CPU Use, Memory Usage. And when right clicking to open the specific monitor the following message pops up.
These do display properly in MX 21.

non-displaying widgets

I discovered the problem re my previous post.
In order for these monitoring widgets to show information, plasma-systemmonitor must be installed which it is not. Even though they are in the default widget list plasma-systemmonitor must also be installed.

Thanks for the info, I will add it to the next build.

apparnently the size settings have changed since whenever tweak was set up. I think I can revise, but please confirm that there are only two options now. scale with panel and small.

Yes, there are only those two options. Of course in MX Tweak there are several sizes but they have no affect. In my opinion a size option in MX Tweak is really unnecessary. Opinions may vary.

Downloaded and ran the ISO in Gnome Boxes on MX 21. It's very quick and easy to set up and delete a temporary VM in it compared to Virtual Box. It would be perfect if I could figure out how to transfer files between hosts and guests in it.

Unlike the XFCE version, the correct resolution is automatically detected, so I get a resolution that fills the available VM display. Also, KDE desktop effects, such as "slide-back", also work in Boxes. More to come...

Running the MX23 alpha2 KDE in virtmanager on MX21 KDE. It is looking good.

Libre Office Writer does not apply the Application Style from KDE System Settings, neither the default style "Breeze" nor others. The application style in Libre Office is 2006-ish.

Libre Office does not use the language from System Settings. In 'Tools> Options > Language Settings > Languages' the Locale Setting is right [here: German], but language for User interface is not. In KDE System Settings it is right, and these settings work in Dolphin and Firefox.

A minor thing: Resizing icons in Dolphin (with scrollwheel or with slider at the bottom) is much more fluid in MX21 KDE (on metal and in VM) than in MX 23. It is not bad, it is ok, but not as fluid.

Here are the first ones:
1. Dolphin is missing those great Service menus
2. I couldn't change the background image for monochrome login screen (works in 5.24.7)

My suggestions for MX23 KDE:
1. replace simple-scan with skanlite and skanpage
2. include krename (some Dolphin services depend on it)
3. include nala
4. rethink about including apt-notifier by default (and disabling discover notifications + systray icon; discover got better, but still sucks... and muon was removed from debian 12)
5. include qml-module-qtquick-xmllistmodel (required by some widgets) and playerctl
6. replace strawberry with audacious (in qt mode)

And I love the new boot logo animation!

I'm fine with krename, not sure about nala, many people complain about multiple ways to do things "apt, apt-get, aptitude, nala, discover, mx-packageinstaller" -- and I personally use nala and like it...
I'm also file with qml-module-qtquick-xmllistmodel
Not sure about simple-scan... I will need more feedback about that, that's also what Xfce uses.

I won't add apt-notifier, discover is the default app manager in Plasma and people expect that, people who prefer apt-notifier you can install that by themselves and take a snapshot if they want to install it like that on other systems.

Discover is integral to Plasma and should be kept. There are graphics available in Discover and not elsewhere.
I am a fan of nala and would be fine with it added.

OK, will add: krename, nala, qml-module-qtquick-xmllistmodel.

What do you guys think about simple-scan.

What about "replace strawberry with audacious"

Is playerctl used for other things if we don't add audacious? Should I add it anyway?

before adding nala, I think we need to confer as to whether that is a blanket add across all versions or just this one.

I would have to try audacious. I know clementine and strawberry integrate with the pulseaudio/pipewire sound controls, but i haven't tried audacious. I presume that it does. again, the question of changing apps might cover all versions. I'm sure we will be discussing app changes. the graphics viewer in the Xfce release has already been mentioned as well.

I know clementine but not familiar with strawbwerry or audacious. (Not into those type of applications).
I tried to install simple-scan. It shows as available in the repos, goes through an install process but does not ultimately show as available??????

Here's description from https://github.com/altdesktop/playerctl
Playerctl is a command-line utility and library for controlling media players that implement the MPRIS D-Bus Interface Specification. Playerctl makes it easy to bind player actions, such as play and pause, to media keys. You can also get metadata about the playing track such as the artist and title for integration into statusline generators or other command-line tools.
Regarding Audacious... They recently switched from GTK to QT and the 4.3 version (not yet in repos) also supports Pipewire. I've been using it since the early days - no libraries, no indexing, no fancy stuff. https://audacious-media-player.org/news ... 3-released

SimpleScan gave me headaches on various machines (all running MX21 KDE Plasma 5.24.7) and that was the reason I switched to KDE apps (it's been a year or so). No problems at all since then. However SimpleScan just works on XFCE :)

Document Scanner does the job efficiently and nicely in my case.

Is strawberry installed by default in that ISO? I thought I had to install the MX version when I booted the ISO?

Richb, Strawberry is a more actively developed fork of Clementine.

Anyway, the MX 23 version is 1.0.17, a few releases ahead of Debian the last time I looked, and theirs is still built with Qt5. When I tried that, Strawberry cmake said that Qt 5 builds, while they work, are no longer actively supported, and recommended a Qt6 build for more features, so that's what I did for MX 23. XFCE users will want to also install qt6-gtk-platformtheme so that qt6 themes will match the GTK 3 theme...

could testers please remove the following packages, reboot, and see if your keyboards, mice, touchpads, etcc... still operate?

xserver-xorg-input-evdev
xserver-xorg-input-kbd
xserver-xorg-input-mouse
xserver-xorg-input-synaptics

that should leave xserver-xorg-input-libinput installed and taking over from the legacy drivers.

Can you check if skanlite now scans in pdf? In the first mxkde to be released, we started with skanlite in the development /beta stage but then found it didn't give any option to scan into pdf format.

Is strawberry actually better than clementine at this stage ? Can it import clementine's config ?

For users installing while keeping their home folder, they'd have to redefine their preferences, playlists and re-scan their audio collection which can take time...

There is no way Strawberry can use Clementine's config. There is a workaround, but it's pretty complicated:

https://wiki.strawberrymusicplayer.org/ ... Clementine

Personally I would stick with Clementine.

Skanlite in 5.24.7 offers to save scans in some 20+ image formats including pdf (if that's what you were asking?)

Edit: just checked... same in the MX23 KDE Alpha

The first MX-KDE was MX19. Skanlite scanned in tons of formats then, but not pdf. It was in the first test alpha (perhaps that was a dev-only internal alpha) until we found it did not scan in pdf.

If it's now providing pdf in MX23, then there's been an improvement and perhaps @Adrian can consider it again. However, I think those who use Plasma more often than I should chip in with their preferences. I have not much skin in this game.

Just took a look at skanlite on mX 21 and it does have more options than Document Scanner. I do not see a save as pdf option. I will boot to 23 and take a look. But from what I have seen on 21 I would vote for it to be included.

Skanpage does have a save as pdf option that does work. If there is a desire to have that option, and it seems like a good one to have, skanpage is the way to go.

I agree. I will replace simple-scan with skanpage... speak now or forever hold your peace.

Clementine vs. Strawberry debate is continuing, I will listen to more arguments.

Any app replacement requests? I particularly look to replace anything non-KDE/Qt with native apps. Or make a better app selection in case there are two or more alternatives, like in case of skanlite and skanpage.

skanlite is more like simple-scan and skanpage is for multipage/book scanning. I'd vote for having them both.

Both support save to pdf. I've been using them for more than a year now and I always save scans to pdf

I stand corrected. Both have save to pdf. Missed it the first go around in scanlite. But do we still need both? If one is more for multipage it still can do single pages.

I agree, I don't want both of skanpage can do what skanlite can do. Is anything missing in skanpage? Just that skanlite is simpler it's not a reason to install two scanning apps.

After checking the "User Installed Packages" I found some more suggestions:

1. system-config-printer
If not installed it could raise an error/warning when adding network printers -> like this: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=218143
I only have HP printers so I cannot confirm if this also happens with other brands

2. ocs-url
Nice to have (to directly install from store.kde.org)

3. plasma-browser-integration
Again, nice to have

4. plasma-firewall
A more simple (but KDE/integrated) implementation of a GUI for ufw

OK, we now have in the 23 repos:

kde-servicemenu-extract-and-compress
kde-servicemenu-checkhash-installdebs
kde-servicemenu-rootactions
kde-thumbnailer-epub

and Tim had already done kde-servicemenu-kim5 for image processing.

I'll have to check on the rootactions one. The one in 19 and 21 was using polkit to get root access, so I wonder why that stopped working.

I installed the MX 23 rootactions on the alpha2 in Boxes, and was able to open a system conf file as root in Kate, and then open a root Dolphin in that same folder.

root dolphin was one I couldn't do. perhaps this is a change since 5.27 came out.

kate and kwrite can edit and save documents as root already, they just prompt when you save, same as featherpad (in action if not method)

Some MX-KDE metapackage update did pull in the new servicemenu packages, barring the rootactions. I think that can be added now. I didn't check the epub thumbnailer, but it's nice to see the cover of an epub book as a thumbnail in the file browser.

Hi there
It's my first post, so firstly let's say hello community :)

Is it possible to get plasma 5.27 also running in wildflower right now, or only with using alpha?

thx

You should ask this as a separate question on the forum, as it isn't MX23_KDE alpha2 feedback

I don't think it is possible to run plasma 5.27 atop debian bullseye nor MX21. It is possible though to run 5.24 LTS or 5.25 using a third-party repository, see instructions here.

If you have further questions, please post them on the relevant thread, not this one here which is dedicated to providing feedback to the MX23 alpha KDE edition (based on debian bokworm which should be released in june)

I did it also
Logged in. configured to sync storage. answered with yes to integrate it in filemanager.
But where is it? Cannot find any NC folder

This KDE online access and the Nextcloud integration is actually nothing more than a WebDav connection being displayed in Dolphin.
But you can also do this directly in Dolphin.
It is also a pure WebDav drive. No data is synced.
If you want to be able to use the NC data offline, you need the NC Client.

You need to remove partitionmanager-modified-launcher, we removed from the build script and actually from the repo too.

Yep - that did it.

For my future reference, did I miss that note somewhere? If I know where to look, I can look before I post!

MX-23_KDE alpha2 feedback thread

Google translate (rus, ukr -> eng).
Hello.
I've been using MX-23 KDE alpha2 for about a week now. Experience with Linux systems is not great. On my 10 year old HP 4740s ProBook laptop with 8 GB of RAM and SSD (instead of HDD) MX-23 KDE alpha2 works fast, I have not found any significant problems yet. My little observations (may be useful to someone). All of the following is my IMHO.
1. Booting MX-23 KDE alpha2 (iso file) from a multi-bootable USB stick written with Ventoy does not work. Booting from a USB flash drive written to Rufus worked fine (UEFI is enabled in BIOS, GPT in Rufus: Patition scheme, target system is UEFI). Then everything loads fine.
2. Somewhere on the Internet I met that in order to improve WiFi performance, it is better to disable LAN in the settings (if you constantly use WiFi and LAN is not needed). Disabled. Time will tell how WiFi will work.
3. More about WiFi. If WiFi does not turn on after booting the computer, indicate that this connection (WiFi) can be used by all users (“Setting up network connections” - “General configuration” - “All users can connect to this network” - “Apply”). Something like this.
4. I did not find where TimeShift is (or it is not here). There is a snapshot, but this is IMHO different.
4.1. TimeShift helps to get back to a certain point in a WORKING system because TimeShift works when the system itself is working properly. If the system does not work at all (for example, it does not boot), I do not know if TimeShift will help in this case.
4.2. It seems that Snapshot should help when the system does NOT work at all (for example, it does not boot). But I have not yet figured out how to restore the system using the created Snapshot file.
4.3. Now when I'm experimenting a bit and tweaking the system, in order to save the system image and return to a working system (if something went wrong) I make an image of the logical disk on which the MX-23 KDE alpha2 is installed, using external programs that can do image of logical disks by booting from a USB flash drive and running this program. A little long (about 10 minutes in total), but I worked a lot with such programs, I know how they work and this method helps me.
Good luck everyone.
UPD.
1. Today the sound card disappeared from the settings :-(, there is no sound. Where she went, I don't know.
2. After exiting sleep mode, the screen is green and stretched. You need to reboot to restore normal mode.

My few thoughts:
1. Strawberry should for sure replace Clementine. Clementine's last release was in 2016 and it is basically abandoned, Strawberry is actively maintained and gets better with every release. Strawberry is IMHO a much better and feature-rich application than Audacious. Other Qt audio player I would consider is Sayonara: https://sayonara-player.com/
2. As a firewall, have you considered having OpenSnitch (https://github.com/evilsocket/opensnitch) installed by default?
3. I always install nala as the first thing on the new system. It is great and should be there by default.
4. plasma-browser-integration is another thing I always use and I think it should be there.
5. Include SMPlayer by default instead of VLC. It is a much better player than VLC, no visual and audio artifacts. One thing to consider is changing the skin to "Black" as the default one looks very bad.
6. KRename can be there by default.
7. Double Commander (Qt) could be there by default.
8. I would have only Kate installed by default, no KWrite.
9. Perhaps Qalculate (Qt) by default?

Some other suggestions:
1. There is a CLI metadata cleaner app called mat2: https://0xacab.org/jvoisin/mat2. It has an option to integrate it with Dolphin: https://0xacab.org/jvoisin/mat2/-/tree/master/dolphin. Maybe this could be done by default in MX-23?
2. CopyQ (https://hluk.github.io/CopyQ/) as the default clipboard manager.
3. Spectacle (https://apps.kde.org/spectacle/) as the default screenshot tool. It has gained a lot of useful features in the latest release.
4. Fastfetch (https://github.com/LinusDierheimer/fastfetch) as the default fetch app.
5. maza (https://github.com/tanrax/maza-ad-blocking) installed and by configured in cron to update daily/weekly by default.

I also think that TimeShift should be there by default. Maybe perhaps it could be added to the welcome screen that asks user, if he wants to set up a backup schedule with TimeShift, especially when installed on a BTRFS partition.

I vote for the Timeshift too, and I would like to know what needs to be in place, to have the same backup-restore functionality as in Linux Mint, when used with BTRFS.
I have deemed BTRFS a SSD life eater (quite substantial volume written per unit of time, even in PC idle states), but, with availability of modern SSDs with huge TBW, I am reconsidering it now.

I would like to have snapshots of root, and installer to support subvolume layout required for Timeshift to work on BTRFS. Also on top of LUKS.
Is that feasible?

EDIT: just to reiterate main points of Timeshift on BTRFS - ability to change which subvolue will be mounted as root, with a mere click, no overwriting of data. If system is screwed, you can do that from live rescue environment.
And the "screwed" version will be kept, available to future usage.

The installer does that now.

Do you mean, that if I choose BTRFS on root, the subvolume layout will be same as on Ubuntu, using "@", and I can switch between different snapshots with Timeshift?
(I have read, that Timeshift requires this type of subvolume layot, to support this on "fast" switching, and to use BTRFS snapshots. If I already have BTRFS root volume, I want to avoid rsync.)

You might have to add the subvolume (right click the partition that is to be formatted btrfs), but if you make it the target for root, yes its "@". to work with timeshift.

This is excellent information!
Since when is this functionality available? I have still been using classic EXT4 root + EXT4 backup "news" FS type, together with Rsync, not knowing that BTRFS stuff it is possible already.

There's this bug in Settings (Startup and Shutdown > Login Screen) in Monochrome SDDM theme that is installed by default. When I try to change/remove the login background, the buttons (Load from file, Clear image) are missing on the image preview window. It works in 5.24.7.
