It may not have been seated properly. Ram sticks are keyed and they only fit in the sockets one way. When properly inserted the fold down tabs at both ends of the sockets should snap upright.

There's also the possibility that you purchased dual channel ram when the existing stick is single channel (or vice versa). If the existing stick doesn't specify which type it is, my suggestion is to purchase a matched pair like this:
https://www.canadacomputers.com/product ... _id=060911
and then discard the existing stick after the new ram has been installed and is working properly.
Also, I think that in this instance, I think that it would be a good idea to go to an actual computer parts store and asking for their help rather than blindly ordering on Amazon.
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

Can't overemphasize CB's comment about
"/ ... used: ... (90.7%) ... dev: /dev/sda1"
, (post #69) as the rule of thumb is 80% max for any partition or drive – maybe not quite as problematic on data partitions.

Often, it'll work higher, but sometimes it will work sporadically and sporadic makes it more difficult to find the cause, and sometimes it wont' work.
MX-Cleanup -default settings, also remove old kernels within MX-Cleanup, suggest keep two, current and backup.

If that doesn't do it, maybe try Stacer, or QDirStat (visualize space used), or simply remove items. If trouble, start a new topic.

Okay, well first things first. The wifi adapter thingy arrived and I've installed it. It works.

We'll see how it does when the baby monitor goes on at 9pm!

Good stuff Spider. Is it connecting via the 5ghz band for that is what you should aim for to preclude not only the baby monitor interference but a range of other things that are possible causes for interference on the 2.4ghz band - these are even such things at times as garage door openers and camera doorbells and etc. I was going to offer the following reminder from that dongle's Amazon page about installation but it seems you've had little trouble in installing the driver and etc. However, here's the relevant section for anyone else who may require it ....
Hardware Supported: x86_64/x86_32 (PCs, VirtualBox...), aarch64/armhf (Raspberry Pi 2+, Odroid...). Please find the Linux Driver Installation Guide which is included in the package and follow the steps to download the driver. IMPORTANT NOTE for initial driver installation on Linux: 1. Internet connection is needed. 2. Install the Linux driver before plugging in your WiFi adapter

from here:
https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA ... v-30/sp#sp

Theses are the supported memory types for the desktop's motherboard:
Support for DDR3 2400(OC)/2133/1866/1600/1333 MHz memory modules
Edited to add that since you already have DDR3 1600 installed, any future ram should also be that speed.
In addition to J2Mcgreg's commentary on this RAM topic, I would suggest that different RAM sticks from different suppliers can sometimes be problematic. Do some research on voltages and timings and you will see what I mean - see for example, https://www.linkedin.com/advice/0/how-d ... ge-timings. Once again, the preferred method IMO, is to enter in your motherboard's details to the supplier website such as Crucial and you can't go too far wrong esp. if you order the twin dual ram sticks such as J2 has mentioned.

The router drivers were easy to install. It did come with a dick with linux drivers on it but also a link, which I went to and downloaded them as that was easier.

It works great :)

Monitor is on and he's getting 100mbps download speed (our connection promises up to 150mbps)

Thank you so much everyone for your help on this, so happy!!

Good to know that the dongle I linked to works as hoped Spider. I have had no use experience nor need for it as my current dongles work fine but given the controversy in various quarters about Realtek drivers it's good to know that this one installed and worked so well even with said driver; the manufacturer's promise that it works for a variety of Linux distros would seem accurate.
