not included on the default iso. and requires user intervention even if it was. no worries. doesnt even affect the xfce compositor unless you turn compton on.

@richb,
I don't normally use any compositing,
but it seems that so long as you don't have
MX-Compton running it should have no effect.
Uninstall it, if present, should avoid conflict.

Never installed it. Kwin has very powerful compositing and effects. I was just asking a question regarding the proposed change which initially sounded like a permanent startup program. D-O explained it was not.

Version 17.01.03 per mx-compton_17.01.03_amd64.deb just added here. Popup notes 'An older version is available in a software channel...etc' which corresponds to the custom *deb now available, thanks DO.

On first glance, not ticking 'Launch Compton at Login' offers a nice test run until I logout (reboot in practice mostly here so test and forget until I choose to use again).

Right off I have noticed the hplip panel icon lost the odd look (bottom and right borders incorrectly showing black instead of being transparent as with other sides).

Also, my custom xfce compositing effects are gone so obviously, testing blurry transparent window effects and such requires me to begin a new 'theme' as it were, with various options to experiment with. After 2,500km and two 12h ferry crossings this week, it works good for me and seems quite logical and intuitive to use.

Edit: I would like to fade windows out since it is a nice effect, yet have selected windows simply appear immediately, but not sure the effects can be separated as such yet in my tinkering.

Notes: simply had to re-enable compositing checkbox (Windows Manager Tweaks-Compositor tab) to resume previous xfce settings after restarting machine, but admittedly, custom settings had been reset, which is a 20 second job to reinstate.

From what I can see, my earlier Compton settings were 'remembered' (in a simple user config type file?) when I reinstalled the *.deb (*awaiting an 'Apply').

Also, my xfce personal settings (sliders) were also displayed in WIndows Manager Tweaks, Compositing simply being unchecked after running the latest Compton *.deb, thus elevating the application to the effective status of MX 'windows manager switcher/Compton GUI settings manager' now  I hope this fits with your intentions somewhat. It works for me looking at it this way, at least.

I gather xfce Windows Manager Tweaks and Compton offer slightly different flavors of windows effects, with Compton allowing further 'manual' tinkering if the user is so inclined. compton.conf looks relatively simple and non-intimidating to me, with only html experience to draw from.

DO,
I tried the "hairbrained" package and unfortunately, try as I might, the app refuses to do anything but behave similarly to all my previous reports. This is to say particularly, that the Compton Manager GUI appears once one launches the app from the CLI. And, once it appears (irrespective of whether you then click it to start at login or not) it refuses to survive a close (not Stop button) exit of the manager itself. Perhaps even more telling that I at least, am better off sticking with the XFCE compositor is that changes to settings in the settings section of the manager really doesn't appear to do anything. And even worse still, that temperature phenomenon I have mentioned before seems to have re-surfaced and the comparative readings follow. I have uninstalled compton and reactivated XFCE compositing and hope that after I log out of this session and reboot the temperature issue will resolve (as it did before).

Prior to the latest compton install
-----------------------------------------
Physical id 0 49 C
Core 0 49 C
Core 1 47 C
Core 2 41 C
Core 3 45 C

After latest compton install
---------------------------------
Physical id 70 C
Core 0 54 C
Core 1 53 C
Core 2 55 C
Core 3 73 C

The "after" readings are actually what is happening as I write so once again, I am hopeful that they return to a more normal state upon a system restart.

Cheers.

Edit after reboot
--------------------
44 C
44 C
44 C
40 C
44 C

All the above readings obtained from Sensors Viewer.

I see nothing unusual regarding temperature here. Using a clear Panel image, Compton is running much like it appears in xfce, settings chosen being somewhat similar. It is currently set to launch Compton at login since I'm happy with using it for a while, checking out more settings as I go.

Interesting Tascoast, then it follows that the app just does not like my rig for the temperature phenomena is as I have reported, real.
Right now and some 10 minutes after the reboot, Sensors Viewer is reporting even cooler temps of 44 43 44 39 and 42. I should also note that during those elevated readings I have described, I heard the fans in the case really take off.

With readings now a more normal 43, 42, 43, 37 and 41, and no evidence of high speed fan activity, it convinces me that unfortunately something seems to happen (if only in my rig) with the interaction of the XFCE compositor and the MX-Compton app. This notwithstanding the fact that before I installed compton, I unchecked the XFCE compositor and even rebooted before installing compton.
