When asking for help, use Quick System Info from MX Tools. It will be properly formatted using the following steps.
1. Click on Quick System Info in MX Tools
2. Right click in your post and paste.

I experienced some kind of, either system or desktop, corruption with both Plasma and Xfce editions ... both 64 bit.
The corruptions happened after doing a system update.

When booting up I did not get the usual screen display ... a keyboard was shown ... alt+tab shows a login screen, but had to use the keyboard to type in a password ... and nothing happened.

Dell Inspiron 15 5567 PC Laptop, 16 gb system memory, samsung 512 ssd.

No joy!

Please do not tack onto an already solved thread. That kernel has already gone through several updates since then by Debian.

Also, forum rules ask for a QSI with every post about this kind of issue. One thing among many is that it tells us exactly what kernel you have now.
MXPI = MX Package Installer
QSI = Quick System Info from menu
The MX Test repository is mostly backports; not the same as Debian testing
