while running liquorix 6.6.8 kernel I cannot use function keys to switch to console under sysVinit. Actually, what I think is happening is the console is available but the screen doesn't change.
using the terminal commands to change vt (chvt)did not work either, yielding either a blank screen (vt1) or a screen that still shows the graphical desktop (vt2).
using the debian 6.6.8 kernel does not have this problem at all.
I sort of suspect a graphics problem, but not sure why the debian kernel would be unaffected if that is the case.

like the original report, I appear to have no problems under systemd.
issue may be present with other liquorix kernels, I've just never noticed before the user in the previous thread mentioned it.

I've just sent up a new revision of the 6.6.8 Liquorix, 6.6-10, but I don't know if that bug was the reason, or if the cgroups fix is related.
Code: Select all
* implement stubs for current and legacy cgroup files
* update version to 6.6.8-2

This does NOT appear to happen in 6.4.9 liquorix on my test machines, but does happen on 6.5.9 and above.

And agree - it does actually appear to be changing to the console... just leaves the graphic on screen until you return.

I haven't tried the 6.6.8 but it's ok here with 6.6.5
The common point of your cards (at least the 1st cards) are being Intel (and AMD on siamhie's)
Mine is Nvidia with nouveau
(Just "maybe" ... )
(Had changed the vblank to off , but tried all now, still ok )

using the debian 6.6.8 kernel does not have this problem at all.
I sort of suspect a graphics problem, but not sure why the debian kernel would be unaffected if that is the case.
@dolphin_oracle I confirm that the problem not subsist in MX's 6.5.x ahs kernel(is Debians i guess).

I guess those graphic problems are very delicate/sneaky in Linux. In fact actually I use the last Liquorix kernel available in repo because the guys here suggested try using them to solve a stalling problem during boot after a Restart in a freshly installed Libretto system.
nomodeset resolves the hang but introduce other issues.All in all actually I dont'use Restart till stall problem resolution.
To get a better picture please take a look in
that thread

Still everything's fine here. I can navigate bw. ttys and manually login ... cursor etc.. all fine:

Looking at @Charlie Brown's QSI I noticed he had nosplash in his boot options, so I changed my boot options to nosplash and I can switch to tty's with no problem while booted to sys-v.
One other thing I noticed is with the splash option in my boot options, the screen is black (booted to sys-v) but if I press enter the tty eventually shows up and I can then switch back and forth between tty7 and tty1-6 and any tty shows up right away.
It seems to be something with the splash option and liquorix kernels 6.6.5? through the latest 6.6.8-2 versions.

and indeed just hitting enter on my "locked screen" brought up the console.
weird, but liveable.

My Goodness, in fact that was the first thing that came to my mind but I didn't say it as it might sound absurd or irrelevant. :D
Just btw. one more thing about that:
When decrypting on boot screen: if you use the
splash (or if you completely remove it) then it does the "echo" (displays the *** ) .. No matter you hit the tab key or backspace first and no matter you edit the fstab and add parameters for that. The only way is
nosplash. So, we can say "having no splash parameters and having a
nosplash parameter are not exactly the same things".

From what I understand (feel free to correct me) is the splash/nosplash refers to the plymouth screen during boot. So having the nosplash option is the same thing as disabling the splash theme which removes the splash option in your boot options.
splash.jpg
One more thing. I tried several other splash themes and I had the same results with any tty not showing unless I press enter and wait for the tty screen to show.

@Charlie Brown has a non UEFI machine but has the nosplash option in his boot options. (nosplash works for me on my UEFI machine)
I wonder if he would experience the same issue using the splash option instead?

Installed the 6.6.8 just now (just out of curiosity and of course to help bugfixing) "directly from Liquorix" ..
Still everything's fine here. I can navigate bw. ttys and manually login ... cursor etc.. all fine:

Another note. This isn't relegated to the liquorix kernel. I'm experiencing it also with the xanmod kernel.

Yes, I mean: in terms of Plymouth (and seeing a splash screen or not) it is. However, in terms of all/other consequences we can say they're not "exactly" the same. Actually that's why I (after just removing the
splash) turned back to particularly adding the
nosplash :)

Just now booted with splash (after a full shutdown rather than a reboot) and still everything's fine. Logged in manually on tty1, navigated between all ttys either with Ctrl+Alt+ F keys and Alt+ arrow keys (right/left) .. All fine..
Then... yes, it may be something due to Bios/Uefi ... Or at least we can say it doesn't affect the classic Bios machines, no matter it's splash or not :)

@Charlie Brown Could you test something for us. Enable splash and boot to sys-v and let us know if the tty's respond or if you also get a black screen.
Your system is the only one we know of that uses BIOS and not UEFI as the boot mode.
Just saw your post. So it does seems to be a UEFI issue. I wonder if the same thing happens to those running the latest 6.6.x kernels in MX-21 and UEFI?

I suppose we can rule out plymouth as a possible culprit? I wonder what has changed since kernel 6.6.5 then?
The current (semi) fix is if you are using UEFI and encounter the black screen, just press enter and wait for the tty to show.

I'd say : Maybe the version and/or additional SysV script (
plymouth-modified-init) :
Code: Select all
plymouth-label 0.9.5-3 amd64
plymouth-themes-mx 21.09.01 all
plymouth-themes 0.9.5-3 amd64
plymouth-x11 0.9.5-3 amd64
plymouth 0.9.5-3 amd64
vs.
Code: Select all
plymouth-label/stable,now 22.02.122-3 amd64 [installed,automatic]
plymouth-modified-init/mx,mx,now 23.07.021 all [installed]
plymouth-themes-mx/mx,mx,now 23.07.01 all [installed]
plymouth-themes/stable,now 22.02.122-3 amd64 [installed]
plymouth-x11/stable,now 22.02.122-3 amd64 [installed]
plymouth/stable,now 22.02.122-3 amd64 [installed]
But:
CharlesV wrote: Mon Jan 01, 2024 12:42 pm ...mx21 and 6.6.7 liquorix ( UEFI ) yes it happens ...
Then... just the Liquorix causes something (related to splash and on Uefi only) ...

Would you like some more confusion? (

)
Since it happens on SysV only :
My init version is: 3.08 (had installed from source manually) ... yours are 3.06 (also MX-21 : 2.96)
... Though the release notes don't mention something that might be related:
Code: Select all
3.08:
Enable kexec, fix halt in some situations Latest
This release focuses on three changes which are basically imports of patches from Gentoo. Special thanks to floppym for supplying these.
Applied a patch from floppm which adds kexec option to the halt command. This can be used as "halt -k".
floppym provided patch which causes the halt command to call "shutdown -h -H" instead of "shutdown -h" when halt is invoked without parameters.
This forces the shutdown command to set the INIT_HALT variable and assume, unless other conditions apply, that the "halt" call really wants to
halt the machine and INIT_HALT should be set. In other words we assume halt wants to halt unless told otherwise.
Addresses downstream Gentoo bug ID 911257.
Updated halt documentation and help output to display parameters in alphabetical order.
3.07:
Fixes for killall5 and pidof
The 3.07 release of SysV init mostly introduces fixes and improvements for the killall5 and pidof programs. (These are actually the same program,
but are invoked with two different names, which result in different behaviour. The main highlights in this release are:
Fixed killall5 so that processes in the omit list are not sent any signals, including SIGSTOP.
Fixed usage message for killall5 to be more accurate.
pidof was not returning PIDs of programs which were launched using a symbolic link. This has been fixed so programs run from a symbolic link show up in process lists.

I think it might have something to do with the liquorix/xanmod kernels.
I installed the Debian 6.6.8 kernel from the popular apps tab and I have no problem switching to a tty session.

Correct. Still doesn't pin down where the issue lies but if it really bothers someone running those kernels, they can use Debian's latest kernel without issue.

Maybe any of you installs the init 3.08 and tests with Liq + Uefi + SysV :D

@Charlie Brown I'll test it if I know exactly which app to upgrade.

Oh, it's already there , I realize this just now :)
I've been using the above one: simply
sudo make (and)
sudo make install
You can use the gui if you like... (check the 3: initscripts..., sysv... )

While looking through my syslog, I keep coming across this section which correlates when I was switching to a tty while booted to sys-v on my UEFI machine.
There seems to be a lot of these entries, probably when I was testing. Odd that it's setting the console to 320x90 which of course my monitor doesn't support.
Code: Select all

Here's a twist.
I can get it to work with the 6.6.9 liquorix kernel and UEFI.
Open MX Boot Options and on the kernel parameters line remove either splash or quiet. Having both of them creates the issue.
Works: splash
Works: quiet
Doesn't work: splash quiet
Code: Select all

Continuing with this tty error testing, I tried out 6 different kernels and found a common ground (I think). It does happen to be framebuffer related.
kernels.jpg
Here are the two kernels that work with UEFI machines.
Debian 6.6.8 (AHS) <----MXPI
Debian 6.6.9 (AHS) <----MXPI
Here are the four kernels that don't work with UEFI machines.
Liquorix 6.3.9-1 <----MXPI
Liquorix 6.4.15-2 <----MXPI
Liquorix 6.5.11-3 <----MXPI
Liquorix 6.6.9-1 <----directly from the Liquorix repo
While looking at each of the config files in the headers folder for each kernel (/usr/src) I noticed this section seems to be different between Debian's kernels and Liquorix's kernels.
Debian:
Code: Select all
#
# Console display driver support
#
CONFIG_VGA_CONSOLE=y
CONFIG_DUMMY_CONSOLE=y
CONFIG_DUMMY_CONSOLE_COLUMNS=80
CONFIG_DUMMY_CONSOLE_ROWS=25
CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE=y
# CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE_LEGACY_ACCELERATION is not set
CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE_DETECT_PRIMARY=y
CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE_ROTATION=y
# CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE_DEFERRED_TAKEOVER is not set
# end of Console display driver support
Liquorix:
Code: Select all
#
# Console display driver support
#
CONFIG_VGA_CONSOLE=y
CONFIG_DUMMY_CONSOLE=y
CONFIG_DUMMY_CONSOLE_COLUMNS=80
CONFIG_DUMMY_CONSOLE_ROWS=25
CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE=y
# CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE_LEGACY_ACCELERATION is not set
CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE_DETECT_PRIMARY=y
CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE_ROTATION=y
CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE_DEFERRED_TAKEOVER=y
# end of Console display driver support
Seems Debian comments out "CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE_DEFERRED_TAKEOVER" and Liquorix doesn't.

@siamhie THIS might explain why I had so much trouble with the plymouth animation being wonky when I was setting it up! We came to the conclusion it was frame buffering, and I got around it, but there was flat out something odd at play and I was testing on regular / liquorix and different versions.
Excellent work at tracking that! Seriously nice!

@CharlesV Did you happen to test it on a UEFI machine with MX-21? Seems 21 uses plymouth version 0.9.5-3 whereas 23 uses version 22.02.122-3, so I wonder if the liquorix kernels also have this framebuffer issue with 0.9.5-3 plymouth.
I do have a sata ssd laying around that I could add to my system and test with.

Yes, I use mx21 on my main rigs and this was where I created the plymouth animation. When I tested it on mx23 it got all weird on me - that was the beginning of the weirdness (mx23). I was rock solid on mx21, but I was also not up in the 6.x kernels either - I was in 5.14?
This issue of the virtual consoles DOES happen as I explained in post #9 mx21 and 6.6.7 liquorix ( UEFI ) , as well as 6.6.8 as I am on now.

Though it says "do not manually edit", does it change if you comment out that line (then reboot) ?

Hi,
Secondary question: Could this issue affect Remasters/ISO builds in some way?
Before the holidays I built a Test ISO with Liquorix 6.6.6 (not with Snapshot, with build-iso-mx) everything worked as expected... Liquorix 6.6.6 has been removed from the AHS Repo so this morning I built a test ISO with Liquorix 6.6.9 and it would not load the DE (Enlightenment). The mouse pointer appeared and turned into a cursor and that was that. I was able to get into X with a Ctrl-Alt-F2 and 'startx' but something has changed since 6.6.6...
I'm booting with: AVL_MXE_LIVE_BOOT_OPTIONS="quiet threadirqs nosplash"
*EDIT I will retry with 'quiet' removed..

I guess yes , but at least we know that nosplash cures it :)
Edit: Ah, that one looks like a bit different. This issue was only about/when switching ttys ...

But I'm booting with nosplash... Maybe I have a different problem...

I believe those are compile time options.

Hi,
To clarify in case I've muddied the water... It's entirely possible X not loading was simply a boot glitch but removing 'quiet' from my boot switches allowed X to start normally on a rebuilt ISO... I suppose we will hear more about this if more issues pop up with people remastering on these newer kernels..
The removal of 'quiet' seemed to only mean an extra couple of milliseconds of code blurting across the screen so not really a vital option anyway, Although boot splashes look very professional I have never minded watching the console output..

What if you just: threadirqs splash ?
At least out of curiosity :)

@CharlesV . I should go through the thread and make notes as to what does work and what doesn't.
So I think we can now rule out plymouth as there are two versions between MX-21 and MX-23.
MX-21 uses plymouth-0.9.5 version released 2020-07-08 (0.9.5-3)
MX-23 uses plymouth-22.02.122 version released 2022-01-11 (22.02.122-3)

Not entirely sure. I find it easier to just open MX Boot Options and make the changes right there on the kernel parameters line.

From my limited understanding of those two kernel options from this trial and error.
The quiet option just suppresses more of the log messages you'll see on the screen.
The splash/nosplash option just enables or disables the plymouth boot animation.

Liquorix:
Code: Select all
CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE_DEFERRED_TAKEOVER=y
# end of Console display driver support
Seems Debian comments out "CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE_DEFERRED_TAKEOVER" and Liquorix doesn't.
Good findings.
Maybe try this kernel boot parameter:
to disabled "deferred takeover" of the framebuffer,
which may help to show the virtual console.

I'm putting together a what works and what doesn't list regarding the switching to a tty console.
(work in progress)
What works:
Booting to systemd regardless of the machine (BIOS/UEFI) or kernel (Debian/Liquorix)
Booting to sys-v with BIOS and ANY 6.6.x kernel
Booting to sys-v with UEFI and only the Debian 6.6.x kernel
What doesn't:
Booting to sys-v with UEFI and any Liquorix 6.6.x kernel
Current fixes for the sys-v, UEFI and Liquorix 6.6.x kernel:
Remove splash from kernel parameter
or
Remove quiet from kernel parameter
or
Add fbcon=nodefer to the kernel parameter
