Did you verify computer1 IP address each time and edit the command I gave you before running it?Falcon wrote: Sat Nov 25, 2023 7:10 pm After booting computer #1 from a USB, I reran the command in the terminal on computer #2 and got the same error as mentioned above.

The MX Tool called MX Samba config is in place to eliminate this frustrating experience. No longer do you need to edit files, it's all mouse actions!adamofbremen wrote: Sat Nov 25, 2023 10:39 am I had no end of trouble trying to work with samba under mx linux. There seems to be some sort of permissions problem. I gave up in the end. I use NFS. It is much simpler.
....
It's easier to understand and it's real Linux, not some Microsoft rubbish.

Re: Setting Up and Sharing Files on the Network - Any More Ideas?
I went back and started to trace this thread from the beginning. In a previous post, you stated:
This has not been done. I opened User Manager, but the way that it appears, this is used to add users to THIS computer. How do I add another computer to the Users? Do I just do it like I'm adding a user to this computer, or is there more to it?Samba on Linux desktops has no concept of 'network' users.
So, the primary user of computer2 and computer3 also need a User Account on computer1 via MX User Manager.
They will then show up on the share tab as users that can be given permissions.

Yes.Falcon wrote: Sun Nov 26, 2023 3:52 pm Do I just do it like I'm adding a user to this computer, or is there more to it?
This is referring to a transparent connection to shares. If the user on computer2 logs into computer2 when they connect to a share on computer1:
1) If the share on computer1 only has the computer1 user in its permissions when the computer2 user clicks on the share they will get a login popup. They have ONE choice, to log in as the computer1 user.
2) If a user account exists on computer1 for the user of computer2 it changes the behavior. When the computer2 user clicks on the share from computer1 it will open, WITHOUT requiring a login if they have permission to the share.
KDE eases connecting to shares by eliminating the login popup. You fill in a Default user name and Default password: in Network ---> Settings ---> Windows Shares as below.

I assume that when I add the new Uses, that I should not give them Administrator Rights and I still need to add them into the MX SAMBA CONFIG. Correct?

Re: Setting Up and Sharing Files on the Network - Any More Ideas?
Okay, I went into each computer and added the other two computers as Users. Then I went into the SAMBA Config on computer #1 and computer #2 and added the folder that I wanted to share and also the user names and passwords for the other two computers. When I started SAMBA Config on computer #3, I got a message window saying "Error listing shares". I clicked OK and I got the SAMBA screen. However, when I attempted to enter the path to the folder that I wanted to share, I got the same message - Error listing shares. That's the first issue.
When I opened File Manager on computer #1, I see computer #2, computer #3, and MX. If I double click on MX, I see print$ and Computer #1 Music Folder.
When I open File Manager on computer #2, I see the same thing - computer #2, computer #3, and MX. If I double click MX I see print$ and Computer #1 Music Folder. If I double click on the Computer #1 Music Folder, I get a window asking me for a password. I enter the password that I chose in the SAMBA Config on computer #1 for computer #2 and click Connect, but the window disappears and nothing happens.
The same thing occurs if I try these operations on computer #3.
For some reason, computer #1 appears as MX and attempting to connect to computer #1 does not work from the other two computers..

Re: Setting Up and Sharing Files on the Network - Can anyone else think of anything?
Does anyone else have an idea on how to get this working?
Re: Setting Up and Sharing Files on the Network - Can anyone else think of anything?
I believe what you are seeing is a samba failure to start (ie no logs, computer not showing up etc. )
you might try removing samba completely and then reinstalling it - this is one thing I have not seen in walking back through this thread.
On computer #1
1) Remove Samba
2) clear cache ( apt and app ) in MX Cleanup
3) Reboot
4) Reinstall samba
5) Go to /var/log and verify a samba folder and in that folder watch for the samba log ( log.smbd )
__ If there is no /var/log/samba folder, then create it using root account
____ sudo mkdir /var/log/samba
6) restart samba and check the log (I would also restart nmbd and check that log too )
7) verify that you see something very close in the log.smbd to this:
If you dont have a log after the restart or it doesnt specifically say the above, then something is very corrupt with samba.
if the log.smbd looks like the above, then you should see computer1 on the network, and then can set up the shares.

daemon_ready: daemon 'smbd' finished starting up and ready to serve connections

Re: Setting Up and Sharing Files on the Network - Can anyone else think of anything?
I just got a chance to look at this again.
I followed all of the steps above and there is no log file under var/log/samba
Computer #1 does show up in the Network display, in a way, but the computer name is not displayed. It is shown as MX. Computer #2 on the network is shown by its correct name.
If I go to computer #2 and look at the network, computer #! shows up as MX. If I double click on it, the folder name that I want to share on computer #1 appears, However, when I attempt to access it, after entering the password, nothing happens; the login window disappears, but there is still no access to the folder on computer #1.
The same thing happens if I try to access the share folder on computer #2 from computer #1. I enter the proper password on the login screen but after I press Connect, the window disappears and I still can't access the folder.
The same thing happens if I try to access the shared folder on computer #2 from computer #3, and vice versa. I double click on the computer name, enter the password on the login screen, click Connect, and the window disappears but there is no access to the shared folder in either case.
By the way, under DOMAIN on the login window, the domain shown is WORKGROUP. This is filled in automatically. Is this correct, or should it be something different. Also, I noticed that there is a version of MX SAMBA Config in the Test Repo. Would it be worth giving that a try?
