when I upgrade the headers , neither Generic nor Liquorix 6.10.11-1 work. there will be a blinking cursor when booting.
Please let me know what information is required to solve this issue.

As I understand it (could be wrong) a kernel and its headers are a matched pair and you can't upgrade one of the two on its own. Doing so would be like putting a Honda transmission into a Nissan and expecting good things.

linux-headers versions have to exactly match the kernel (linux-image) version you are running. If you install a kernel with the MX Package Installer it will automatically install the matching headers.

yes yes, sorry for the confusion, I mean headers and kernel. just the regular upgrade in terminal. I tried in the package installer also, with the same results.

When you used MXPI, were you accessing the Popular Apps tab or the Enabled Repos tab? If it's the latter, it's possible that you grabbed the wrong headers package by mistake.

In the package installer, I searched for linux-image, installed the latest ones available in Debian backports:
linux-image-6.10.6+bpo-amd64
linux-image-6.10.11-1-liquorix-amd64
thank you

I suspect that the issue is related to this:
1: deb [arch=amd64]
https://repo.radeon.com/rocm/apt/6.0.2 jammy main
Apart from using Ubuntu repos on a debian based system (generally bad idea and an easy way to accidentally break your installl) the rocm framework is closely tied to the amdgpu driver which partially resides in the kernel. That's why AMD lists rocm compatible OS versions - which doesn't include debian stable. I suspect you're stuck with the kernel you have unless you remove rocm, or go through the compatibility list and install the default kernel version from one of those systems.
I wish you luck, but by using so many Ubuntu repos you have created a frankenOS for which we can have no certain answers.

That particular 6.4 Liquorix kernel is no longer in our repository. When Liquorix starts packaging a new major version, such as 6.5 over 6.4, we delete all the previous version's releases except the last, which in 6.4's case is 6.4.15-2 (6.4-20). This is to free up some of our not unlimited space on the repository servers.
We will also delete kernels if they are discovered to have a major security flaw.

I sincerely don't remember adding this repo, and I am not sure how to go about removing it... my feeling is that when I boot one of the aforementioned images, something goes wrong with amdgpu driver, but I say this because the blinking cursor has been always there for me when there have been problems in the past with GPU drivers, nvidia especially. But i don't remember having any problems with GPU drivers in this MX23 installation.
If there is a way to fix this, i would be very thankful.

This is why you are having trouble with amdgpu drivers when the other MX users are happy using the stock version in our own repositories, and which is also included on the ISOs.
Maybe you could tell us why this is in your repositories:
Code: Select all
Active apt repos in: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/amdgpu.list
1: deb https://repo.radeon.com/amdgpu/6.0.2/ubuntu jammy main

I wish I had a time machine to go back and report, but I am pretty sure I didn't add this repo myself. Can it be that it was added when installing another package? I have been using Linux distributions for many years, I do what is necessary to keep my system running and actually use the computer to do things. I am not an expert by any means, I follow instructions on the web, previous solutions when available. I guess many users are in the same situation like me, we appreciate the effort developers put in to create and maintain a distro, but we just want to use our system to do the various things we want to do. when a problem comes up, we do our best to solve it, but a user should not be expected to understand in details the working of an operating system, otherwise how many people will be ready to deal with this kind of complexity when all they want to do is keep using their computer?

Then you will know that different distros have different requirements, function differently, and what works for one Linux distro will not work for another.

Most of the experts you're going to meet started out doing the same thing. I personally made a career for a year or so as a Linux consultant based on six or seven years of experience and, when I met an error I'd never seen before, I was just better at Googling than my clients were.

There's basic "dos" and "don'ts" for every operating system. Why would Linux be an exception? At the top of the Help forum is a pinned post called
How to Break Your System. If you run Windows for any serious length of time you learn not to mess with things in C:\Windows\System32. If you're going to run MX Linux for any serious length of time you're going to read, follow, and understand the How to Break Your System post. At the end of the day Linux offers a lot more independence than commercial operating systems. You might not be ready for that responsibility if "I should not be expected to understand [the] details" is your go-to argument for changing a config setting.
I understand you want to just Get Things Done. So too do we all. You have a responsibility to understand the changes you're making to your machine for one reason: no one else has the means or motive to tell you otherwise. It's your Linux install. You're allowed to break it if you want. When you have that kind of unrestricted freedom in your OS, you don't get to complain that it didn't come with training wheels and a big red "undo" button.

But were you following internet instructions that were meant for Ubuntu systems, when you were not running a Ubuntu-based distro? That seems a common-sense thing to check even for everyday non-expert users.
I'm not trying to pile on you even more, but it would be helpful now to dig through your memories to provide the experts on this forum [not me] with as much info as you can remember on what steps you took on or what packages you installed on your computer that was graphics-related. Examples: what websites did you visit, where did you download various packages [deb files] to install, or where did you copy terminal commands to run , etc.
Repos can be added if you copied some terminal commands and ran them, or in some cases it is true that a deb file you installed might automatically add a repo as part of installation.

I am sorry, this thing is turning into a debate, and that's not my intention. All I am saying is, I didn't do anything to change the system, I am well aware of the problems that can arise from messing around with things I don't fully understand in a Linux environment. Windows, i don't know too much about it, it's more or less 20 years that i don't use it anymore. I have been using MX-23 without any issue, updating when necessary and installing software when needed. I don't remember manually adding repos, i am not even sure i know how to do that in a Debian environment. My system has been running without issues. A few months ago i updated it, there is a new Liquorix Image, it doesn't work. I am stuck on this kernel. I point out the problem in the forum, because surely i am not the only one with the issue ( you can google it). if it can be solved, good, if i have to do a clean install, that's also good. Simple.

We know that's not true from the large number of uncommon package repos that are installed. I also see a dedicated liquorix kernel repository listed, so there isn't even a guarantee you're trying to use an MX-provided liquorix kernel:
Code: Select all
Active apt repos in: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/liquorix.list
1: deb [arch=amd64 signed-by=/etc/apt/keyrings/liquorix-keyring.gpg] https://liquorix.net/debian bookworm main
2: deb-src [arch=amd64 signed-by=/etc/apt/keyrings/liquorix-keyring.gpg] https://liquorix.net/debian bookworm main
MX Linux repos contain a handful of supported liquorix kernels that can be installed without relying on liquorix.net repositories. If I were in this situation, I'd first remove any non-MX kernels, backup and clean my repo situation, and make sure I'm installing MX-provided packages from MX-specific repos.

I installed the Liquorix Kernel using this guide
https://linuxcapable.com/how-to-install ... ian-linux/
Like I said, there were no problems and the system ran just fine. I updated the Kernel a few times without any problem. The last version that i can use is 6.4.11-1. After that, upgrading the Kernel and rebooting with the new Kernel, results in blinking cursor. Same thing happens if I install a generic Kernel above 6.4.
I have tried to install from MXPI, the results are the same.
Thank you

Understood, I apologize if I have caused any trouble.
It's ok if you want to say that I am stupid, I am the first one to say that I am, just don't call me a liar, please.

If you had already added this 3rd party Liquorix repo, then when you open MXPI to install from there, you are also seeing contents of this repo listed in the "enabled" tab of MXPI. Packages from all enabled repos will be listed. There is no certainty you are installing a kernel from MX own repos.
It might be helpful to the experts if you post here the contents of /boot/grub/grub.cfg .
It will give an indication of the various kernels installed on your system, at least those as detected by grub.
For now, you can also open MX Repo Manager, go the last tab, and untick the liquorix repo in order to disable it for now.

Reading package lists...
When I reboot using the new Kernel, the loading screen with the blue sun appears, albeit at a lower resolution. when loading is finished, there is the blinking cursor again. I can Ctrl+Alt+F1 go into a terminal and reboot from there. To me these are all signs of GPU drivers not loading properly.
Should I disable the 3rd party amdgpu repo as well? I am worried about bricking my system, which otherwise works fine.
Thank you for the help

What if you boot without the
amdgpu.ppfeaturemask=0xffffffff ?
( Press E when on Grub, delete that parameter , press F10 to go on boot. )
Meanwhile your card is supported by 6.10 :

Do you still have Debian's 6.1 kernel installed? If so, can you boot with that.
I'm curious about this section from grub
Code: Select all

corectrl is a utility for controlling Radeon GPU fans and overclocking.
Code: Select all
Device-1: AMD Polaris 20 XL [Radeon RX 580 2048SP] driver: amdgpu v: kernel arch: GCN-4
I had no problems running my RX580 in MX without corectrl.
I also noticed this repo.
Code: Select all
Active apt repos in: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/amdgpu.list
1: deb https://repo.radeon.com/amdgpu/6.0.2/ubuntu jammy main
Did you install your GPU drivers from the AMD web site?

In order to use the RX580 with good results in high demanding tasks, the card actually needs to be underclocked. there is much information about this topic on the web.
amdgpu worked straight out of the box with MX23. I definitely did not install the drivers from the AMD website. I went through that ordeal in a previous install of MX21, made a mess of it there, did a clean install of MX23 and the GPU worked just fine.
Under heavy load, the GPU would easily black out. Corectrl is used to fine tune voltages and clock rates. after underclocking, there is a net increase in performance (counterintuitive) and no more black outs.
whether installing corectrl automatically adds this repo, i couldn't be sure about that. but I am sure I didn't add that repo manually.

I'm well aware of corectrl (having used it myself before moving to
LACT) but it doesn't add the AMD repo.
Have you tried booting with the default 6.1 kernel?

It's ok if you want to say that I am stupid, I am the first one to say that I am, just don't call me a liar, please.
No one is saying that--and no one should--and it should be clear that
grovelling is not a substitute for doing your homework. The chimera of random repos that you've added to this system look to have finally pulled in something incompatible with kernels of a certain age or type. I've already stated what I would do to fix it and that begins with reading, following, and understanding the
How to Break Your System post and taking actions to remove software that MX didn't or can't install from its official repos.
Another option that occurs to me is to install MX on something else, like in a VM, add a liquorix kernel from the AHS repo, verify it boots as expected, and then make a snapshot ISO of that VM and try to boot it on the problem system. That will at the very least confirm what reinstalling the OS would accomplish without actually doing it. There may still be driver issues, but at least then you'd know it's a driver issue in liquorix and not something buried in a hodgepodge of PPAs.

It's not just the clearly-marked PPAs [which seem to the "normal" music-related ones that AVLinux says might be ok for Debian], it's the amdgpu and the liquorix 3rd party repos that are in question.
I went to the web page whose instructions the OP followed to install liquorix kernel(s) from the 3rd party liquorix repo, and there is a possibility that that one might be ok, since the web page claims this works for Debian 12. I can't be sure of the accuracy of that statement [there must be a reason MX's packaging team take the effort to build our own liquorix kernels from source], but let's assume for now this repo is not the issue.
However, the OP also added the amdgpu 3rd party repo that is meant for Ubuntu Jammy edition. This one raises huge question marks as there is every possibility that OP has pulled in dependencies [built for Ubuntu Jammy] that are not compatible with the MX23 Debian 12 system. It might seem to work for a while, but there comes a time when a system update finally brings the incompatibilities to light.
I agree the OP needs to check that he is able to boot into MX23 default 6.1 Debian kernel [seems to still be listed in his grub.cfg]. Hopefully if that is possible, then the next step is to disable both these repos and remove all packages installed from there [kernels, graphics-related stuff].

I've installed the Liquorix kernel from their
web site and have never had any issues. The instructions are this.
Code: Select all
curl -s 'https://liquorix.net/install-liquorix.sh' | sudo bash
which adds to your source list this entry
Code: Select all
Active apt repos in: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/liquorix.list

2: deb-src [arch=amd64 signed-by=/etc/apt/keyrings/liquorix-keyring.gpg] https://liquorix.net/debian bookworm main
The thing is his QSI shows 6.4.11-1-liquorix-amd64 [6.4-14.1~bookworm] but Liquorix's current kernel is at
6.10-15 (6.10.11-2).
I don't know how they managed to keep that version because when I ran Liquorix's kernel from their repo, it was always getting updated.

I port the Liquorix kernels over to our repo because they don't take that long, and I have to make changes anyway so that they will run on MX 21; specifically to go back to xz compression instead of zstd, since zstd is not supported in Bullseye kernels.

Lets start from scratch. Can you boot from the MX-23 live ISO? Also your topic is misleading, I think. Your wanting to update the kernel, right?
(By the way, I installed the Liquorix kernel from their web site and only the 6.4.15 kernel and headers are available. There is no 6.4.11 version listed).

I have to enter my support for your dilemma giubug. I too have experienced quite similar issues to which you've described. Notwithstanding some assertions from some on the board that it's because of something you (or indeed me) has installed, I too can't account for anything other than a sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade some week's ago which after this process saw the introduction of the problem particularly with amdgpu firmware (and I've seen it too with mediatek firmware) that resulted in as I've said, a very similar situation to you. I can no longer change my existing kernel by either upgrade or downgrade and so I've just resigned myself to putting up with the error messages on bootup (pertaining to no compatible firmware for amdgpu and mediatek devices). Even though those devices work fine with the current kernel I am left to run which is 6.5 ahs. Traditionally, I've always liked to have available in case of some system problem, a couple of kernels to select upon boot up but now alas, this is not possible. I may one day just reinstall MX after backing up files as required but for now, it's just an annoyance rather than an imperative.
I would strongly suggest you load and use Timeshift giubug because its saved me a lot of hassle when I've tried to (and failed) like you to update kernels. Hope this gives you some comfort that you are not alone with your problem and I think that whilst there are some very experienced personnel on this forum we might understand that no one is infallible in their understanding of the intricacies of an operating system be it Windows or Linux or any other computer system IMO.

thank you for expressing your thoughts in such a clear and polite manner.
It is somehow comforting to know that somebody else is experiencing similar issues, at least I can stop going through my mind trying to remember what I did to cause this problem.
As a power user, I am extremely grateful to the developers who build and maintain such a powerful and stable operating system that allows us to do all the wonderful things we do with our systems.
When there is a problem, I believe it is our duty to report the problem, because that is about the only thing we can do to help the developers address issues that might otherwise go unnoticed.
It is by no means a cry for help nor an effort to shame the developers for doing a "bad job", on the contrary, at least from my point of view, it's the only way we can contribute to the development of an OS that can be used by the general public.
Murphy's law is universal, if a system has the inbuilt possibilities to be compromised voluntarily or otherwise by the end user, these flaws will sooner or later show, regardless of who's fault it is, which is not the point at all.

Per your QSI, you have the standard XFCE ISO and not the ahs version.
Code: Select all
Active apt repos in: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/mx.list
1: deb https://mxlinux.cs.nycu.edu.tw/mx-workspace/mx/repo/ bookworm main non-free
which means you were able to boot the live ISO to the desktop using the 6.1 kernel which you can't do with your installation.
So it looks like we can rule out a kernel issue and focus on a graphics issue.
I would try removing the corectrl code from your boot options next and try booting the 6.1 kernel again. We will take this one step at a time.

Keeping that feature turned off for the time being, let's see if you can update to the latest Liquorix kernel provided by MX.
First open MX Repo Manager and go to the Individual sources tab. In the mx.list section check the box that has the "bookworm ahs" entry and apply.
Now open a terminal and type "sudo apt update" to update your sources. (window on the left)
After you have done that open MX Package Installer and on the Popular Applications tab, go to the Kernels section.
Select the Liquorix 64 bit (ahs update package) and click Install. (window on the right)
After you've installed the kernel, go ahead and reboot the computer into the 6.10.11-2 kernel.
Let us know if that works. (remember you have the 6.1.0-10 kernel to fall back on if anything goes wrong)

@giubug
@siamhie
I've been following this thread with some interest due (as stated to giubug in particular) quite similar issues with my set up. I'm running 6.5 ahs with xfce and boot with sysvinit not systemd if that is any factor.
I have tried before the various ways to review repo manager and update kernels from MXPI also to no avail - I can't do anything but keep my current (and only) kernel as described.
giubug, rather than relying on the three finger salute you may like to use Timeshift. That as I've previously mentioned, has saved me a lot of issues in getting my system back up and running without having to boot to a command screen and using the startx and etc route that has been mentioned here.

You seem to be running into issues with that broadcom module.
Try this. Boot back up into the working 6.1 kernel, run MX Cleanup and select Remove unused WiFi drivers.
If it removes the broadcom drivers then try installing the Liquorix kernel again.

You're getting an issue with building a Broadcom wi-fi driver we include on the ISO with a 6.10 kernel. But you don't need it, so the simplest thing to solve this is to use MX Cleanup to remove all the extra unused wi-fi drivers we ship by default, because we want it to work to "just work". We suggest removing unused drivers right after the installation, or even in the Live session, because they are a waste of time to build if you don't use them.
That's an issue with just installing a newer kernel by itself, because we do have updated drivers that will work with newer kernels, but they are in the Advanced Hardware Support (ahs) section of the repositories. They just work if you add the ahs section and upgrade, or if you use the AHS edition (MX-KDE uses it, but with the stock Bookworm 6.1 kernel).

Should I disable the Ubuntu Jammy amdgpu Repo?

Yes. As others have pointed out already, disable all Ubuntu repos, the Liquorix repo, the amdgpu repo so that you only have the Debian and MX repos enabled. MX Repo Manager can help with this.
You can enable them (if you wish) at a later time but we are trying to get you updated to the latest kernel from the MX repo.

One newbie question. Ubunutu is based on Debian. So is MX Linux. So if a driver is built by AMD for Ubuntu that should ideally work with Debian and its derivatives too. But in this case it fails. Why is that the case?
Also the issue appears to be fixed because of the
post by
@siamhie which called for removing the corectrl code from boot options

The issue isn't fixed because OP still can't install the 6.10 Liquorix kernel from the MX repo.
They are able to boot to the desktop with the 6.1 kernel (from the repo) with the
amdgpu.ppfeaturemask=0xffffffff boot option removed.
They are using that variable to undervolt their GPU with corectrl.

I should wait for the new topic, but it's for the same reason you are playing with fire if adding upstream
Debian packages to MX stable: they are very probably not going to be built against the same system libraries as your stable Debian release. They may seem to work fine, but could also then also have subtle bugs later that will be very difficult to root out.

Update: after trying many times, I can not longer boot in 6.1 Generic Kernel.
At this point, I would just re-install. With so many various repos installed, it's hard to distinguish which one is causing problems.
The good news is you have got a separate home partition, so no need to back up config files.
Code: Select all
Partition:
ID-1: / raw-size: 307.32 GiB size: 301.43 GiB (98.08%) used: 33.21 GiB (11.0%) fs: ext4
dev: /dev/sdb2 maj-min: 8:18
ID-2: /boot/efi raw-size: 256 MiB size: 252 MiB (98.46%) used: 274 KiB (0.1%) fs: vfat
dev: /dev/sdb1 maj-min: 8:17
ID-3: /home raw-size: 623.94 GiB size: 613.08 GiB (98.26%) used: 393.55 GiB (64.2%) fs: ext4
dev: /dev/sdb3 maj-min: 8:19
I would download a new copy of MX-23 and this time grab the ahs version (third link).
