system corrupted without apparent reason

Yesterday late after managed to set
ActivityWatch activity tracker all good before shutdown and go to sleep, but after a logout and login I got an unusable system what I mean is:
- All open windows lies amassed one above the other on the screen's left up corner,
- windows have lost the 3 symbols on the right (minimise, maximize, close) and mouse/touchpad focus,
- the cursor become an x but now after some logout, shutdown is again an arrow, then an x again etc,
- cloak is unset and now conky have a dark frame around(see pic),
- the icons(files) I had on desktop disappeared(appear after I open the lip but then disappear then panel and have to shutdown and restart),
- when screensaver goes on and after when I reenter appear the desktop icons but disappear the panel(I have to logout and login to appear again the panel --and disappear desktop icons--),
- the 2 default workspaces not exist more now exist only 1 workspace,
- when cursor goes on a context menu(not on all windows but for sure on browser and file manager(thunar)) the context menu disappear I have to use combo keyboard keys,
- network manager with no wifi(the only net inerface I use actually)-- fortunately when logged in today for some magic reason restart worked so I can write here--
- Actually I can open only one window at a time because they overlap and not change focus not only with cursor but even after tap on them.
...and who knows what other.
Practically the system as is it's definitely not usable :(
I thought to reinstall but before that step lets see with your help if something is recoverable. Really dunno what happened all was OK(a part few annoyances i reported here) and suddenly came the absolute chaos.
In your opinion/feeling happened something system wide or only in my home?
Meanwhile what's the easy way to copy/backup my home(preserving as possible as the original) to a storage device?
Let me know what you think about
TIA

Although I am a real fan of them, the Liquorix kernels can sometimes be hit and miss. At the grub screen press 'e' to edit and then select an earlier kernel as the boot choice. If this gets you back to near normal operation, you can make the switch permanent with Boot Options in MX Tools.

@j2mcgreg I use it some time now without any problem, but lets try your proposition
I changed to debians ahs kernel(no need of grub's edit key all available kernels in system form a list so at boot time it's enough choose one) but nothing changed (now clock shows the correct time and cursor from arrow become again an x. On purpose that reminds me X's pointer and behaviour of windows too)
Something goes wrong with the windowing system seems returned in the old X's good days

I have seen exactly what your describing, and I personally would do the following:
1) create a snapshot right now and preserve your data.
2) Back your data up using back in time or another back up program.
3) If you have recent timeshift, then :
___a) If you back up your home with timeshift, then run timeshift and create a back up now.
___b) Run timeshift again, this time restoring a the back up BEFORE teh one you just did in step a .
The panel can be fixed fairly easily with the panel restore in tweak, and you can also clear out the xfce settings to have it start fresh. But the real fix I found was to roll back to a previous timeshift.

...and cursor's shape changed from arrow become an x. On purpose that reminds me the good old times aka X's pointer and behaviour of windows too
Forgot to mention yesterday I did a Timeshift's rollback(only system no home) but to no avail :( . So probably that's not a wide system problem but regard only my home.
That brought me to create a second user account in the system (on occasion tried also MX users tool)with brand new skeleton of directories and .configuration files and as I thunk and now verified there is not problem at all.
So now what? We know that here some .configuration files, folders in my home for some weird reason have suddenly changed/broken and the weirdness I experience on screen is the result. All that refers locally to my home and not the wide system that's good news.
How can I do to replace the .hidden files, dirs of a new account on my broken account without more headaches?

Code: Select all
rm ~/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xfwm4.xml
Logout, login. (WM will be reset to defaults.)

possbily removing any saved sessions as well. sometimes it can stupidly remember that things like the desktop or the panel are not running, and so they won't be later on session restore.

@dolphin_oracle I had save sessions ticked. Where are stored the sessions?

you can remove them in the Sessions and Startup utility.
FYI removing the xfconf config directory while xfce and xfconf is running won't work. the files just get rewritten when xfce session is over.

I could not find a way to delete them in S&S and I did at one time but I'm in MX-21.3.
The "Saved Sessions" tab does not exist, perhaps it doesn't appear if no sessions were saved?
Unless I missed something.

Yes. It'll appear (for example) when you click "save session" in "Current Session" tab.

assuming something wrong with the Xfce desktop, you can reset your Xfce configuration the following way.
1. logout
2. use cntrl+alt+f1 to get a console, and log in as your regular user.
3. rm -R $HOME/.config/xfce4
4. exit
5. use cntrl+alt+f7 to get back to login prompt.
6. login. you should get the default Xfce desktop.
but I did take a look at activity watch and it should seems to have a lot of X related libraries included in it. maybe remove your autostart entry for it.

I did it but unfortunately no luck thank you for expanded what you refer in #10 post
@dolphin_oracle
As I reported in #5 a brand new home has no problems.
How about if I cp my home's content(~150GB) to a stick (what are the options to take a copy as nearly as possible (-a = -dR --preserve=all) to original?) and then copy a skeleton from /etc/skel to my home(cp -r /etc/skel/* ~/)?
Or maybe better rename my actual home dir as userhome.back and generate(if exist adhoc cmds for that or with a mkdir) a brand new home?

Just did it early morning today. You think can be the culprit?

You can copy from user to user with "MX User Manager" . (Since you say nothing changes with a reset home).
Edit: Oh, now , since you reset it, nothing to copy using that software. Just copy manually one by one from backup and test (after a pkill X ) :)

@Charlie Brown I'm not sure understand what you mean. I say (already verified) that a brand new account in the same system work fine haven't the problems I actually have.
Till now I did nothing new/reset anyway

I mean, normally you can copy from user to user, but since you did as Dolphin suggested, then nothing to copy, cause your previous settings are already gone. So, you can copy things one by one from your backup to the new user. (Then either logout, login or pkill X each time to make it take effect and see/catch the culprit)

Right now I'm again on my default home sweet home :)). In my spare time I do the needed investigation and refer results here

Finally Home Sweet Home
What I did:
- First thing first an integral copy(as near in the original as possible) of my home in a USB stick' The -a option did the trick
(same as -dR --preserve=all) ->
(-d: same as --no-dereference --preserve=links,
-R, -r, --recursive: copy directories recursively,
--preserve=all:
--preserve[=ATTR_LIST] preserve the specified attributes,
-p same as --preserve=mode,ownership,timestamps,
--no-dereference --preserve=link
)
- My brother borrow me a 0.5TB stick identified in linux as sda with a partition sda1 of type c W95 FAT32(LBA).
A first try to cp my home notifies me that stick's file system(i.e. FS fat32) was not capable to treat soft links so had to transform the sda1's FS's type to linux(i.e. from c to 83) trough t(i.e. type) fdisk's internal option. That's the so called "low level format":
- Create an ext4 FS(ext4 unlike MS Windows's FAT is obviously aware of soft links) in sda1 partition trough(t is for type of FS). That's the so called "high level format" or simply "format":

I would
thank all you guys that contributed to solve that issue. Hoping that can help the next misadventure comrade to feel a bit better.
PS:
1) For more info about the meaning(there's a caveat regard globbing :P) of the aforementioned cmd see in the tips & tricks section

2) Pic is pixelated because was heavy(~800KB) and was obliged to use gimp to lighten it up. Anyway that's the pixelated screen I got when used
nomodeset in boot options as a workaround on system freeze issue on machine's restart . For more look in

Thanks mate indeed the mess was heavy(Actually I haven't more machines other than that notebook) so that initially I was ready to a system complete reinstall.
Now with calm I'm wondered what was that caused all that brothel, the first suspect(in order of timing coincidence and nothing more) is ActivityWatch as they also advertise(as would be in general for every application) that AW can't broken an entire system.
Now on I refer here everything related on that inconvenience

Not convinced it was ActivityWatch as I have seen this same result a couple of times now, but it is indeed interesting and as I said I am not too hot on believing a coincidence :-)

After have restored the system I would try to analyze(at a lazy pace) the inconvenience.
So here's the session 2 available logs(x-session.errors) of today IIRC system's restore with few errors, early morning when booted up the system I saw one log(x-session.errors) full of errors unfortunatelly not copy/pasted
@dolphin_oracle If you can devise something interesting let me know

Good job and glad you got it!
@CharlesV
Thanks mate indeed the mess was heavy(Actually I haven't more machines other than that notebook) so that initially I was ready to a system complete reinstall.
Now with calm I'm wondered what was that caused all that brothel, the first suspect(in order of coincidence and nothing more) is ActivityWatch as they also advertise(as would be in general for every application) that AW can't broken an entire system.
Now on I refer here everything related on that inconvenience
Not convinced it was ActivityWatch as I have seen this same result a couple of times now, but it is indeed interesting and as I said I am not too hot on believing a coincidence :-)
@CharlesV Where? only in MX's boxes or in other Linux distros too?

Why the $PATH in VT is different than that on pseudoterminal?(for now --after system's recover I used only suspend the system not shutdown,restart-- is empty )
Why in VT $PATH include those paths to kernel? I'm sure in pst(after a little I rename the new /etc/skel/ .profile and .bashrc and use my original and verify) those kernel paths are absent
$PATH in VT:
Code: Select all
/home/harrykar/bin:/usr/src/linux-headers-6.6.12-1-liquorix-amd64/tools/power/x86/x86_energy_perf_policy:/usr/src/linux-headers-6.6.12-1-liquorix-amd64/tools/power/x86/turbostat:/usr/src/linux-headers-6.6.12-1-liquorix-amd64/tools/power/cpupower:/usr/src/linux-headers-6.6.12-1-liquorix-amd64/tools/perf:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/local/games:/usr/games:/sbin:/usr/sbin
=========================================================================
Update 1:
After have renamed the /etc/skel and did the first logout login after recover .local, .config, .bashrc, .profile now are in use my old dotties seems all good so far
(is lost only the windows focus catch on touchpad cursor,
the terminal I had in panel,
the keybord languages in panel,
xscreensaver show a black screen --was enough CTRL+ALT+delete and password to recover xscreensaver's multicolor screens -- and
some files icons I had on desktop is now shuffled not big deal)
I last .conky and .cache for a next time. because my .conky seems the same as that of /etc/skel (I really not touched it after system install) and .cache is not important and moreover is often source of problems
Regard $PATH:
$PATH in pst
Code: Select all
harrykar@mx:~
$ echo $PATH
/home/harrykar/bin:/usr/local/lib/nodejs/node-v20.11.0-linux-x64/bin:/home/harrykar/go/bin:/usr/local/go/bin:/home/harrykar/.cargo/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/local/games:/usr/games:/sbin:/usr/sbin
$PATH in VT
Code: Select all
/home/harrykar/bin:/home/harrykar/bin:/usr/local/lib/nodejs/node-v20.11.0-linux-x64/bin:/home/harrykar/go/bin:/usr/local/go/bin:/home/harrykar/.cargo/bin:/usr/src/linux-headers-6.6.12-1-liquorix-amd64/tools/power/x86/x86_energy_perf_policy:/usr/src/linux-headers-6.6.12-1-liquorix-amd64/tools/power/x86/turbostat:/usr/src/linux-headers-6.6.12-1-liquorix-amd64/tools/power/cpupower:/usr/src/linux-headers-6.6.12-1-liquorix-amd64/tools/perf:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/local/games:/usr/games:/sbin:/usr/sbin
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Update 2:
I renamed .cache to my old folder and I saw all the mess I experienced 2 days ago. Moreover now for some reason pseudoterminal not get focus at all so I had to rename it again trough VT. If someone more experienced want investigate further I can send it.
Result:
Something in .cache been corrupted. If I knew that in time before do anything else probably would enough remove only that dir to return in normality.

I have seen this in two mx21 xfce machines, one of mine (which has done it twice) and then in one machine I support.

I can think of a few ways to screw up a desktop, besides just random crashes. the easiest would be modification of privileges on files in the home folder, or the home folder itself, and not necessarily desktop config files. a sudo operation in the wrong place could change a permission or an ownership, and then all heck breaks loose.
its one reason we got rid of some right-click options to change file permissions and ownership that long ago we had. They were dangerous for both skilled and unskilled users alike. and a reason we do not ship with bleachbit installed and why the much safer mx-cleanup was born.
not saying an issue like that is in play here, but back in the day users would report problems on multiple machines and it often came down to the same ownership change being done on all machines.
something to consider anyway.

Not convinced it was ActivityWatch as I have seen this same result a couple of times now, but it is indeed interesting and as I said I am not too hot on believing a coincidence :-)
@CharlesV Where? only in MX's boxes or in other Linux distros too?
I have seen this in two mx21 xfce machines, one of mine (which has done it twice) and then in one machine I support.
So as I can understand the point is if is a xfce or MX's problem

What u did in that occasion? you tried to understand what happened? someone reported the issue in xfce team?

I remember finding topics in the xfce forums, for me the fix was to restore my config ( timeshift - I back up my configs) The weird thing on one of mine was there was no updates or anything it was a reboot as the system was starting to leak memory ( I was up to 8gb used with nothing running ) .
The other one was after an update, but it rolled back perfectly .
My clients machine, I also restored timeshift - and they said there was 'nothing they did' .. but .. I take that with a grain.
All three times I had no real clue, only the update was questionable, and when I applied it again.. no issue.

@CharlesV OK next time you & others who experience that inconvenience first thing first try to rename .cache dir and reboot or maybe only logout/relogin in your box.
As last step I have to take a glance in my messed backuped .cache dir to see if can understand something more about
PS: I noticed after system's restoration the screen becomes black when xscreensave have to operate. The first time I did CTRL+ALT+delete + xscreensave required password and saw xscreensave's multicolor screensavers.
But if shutdown and start the system the screen (in screensave's operating time) is always black. You have a clue about how to restore the normal behaviour?

What tool you use for home's backup? Timeshift as I understand is used only for system's backup/recover and is not recommended for home

@dolphin_oracle Yeah as I can remember in my use case haven't tinkering with privileges.
For learning/knowledge sake can you provide a concrete example of your thesis?
TIA

well, if your home folder permissions are such that files can't be created in it by the user, then anything from X not starting to configs that won't update can happen.

Good to know and I will give this a try if it happens again.
Yes, I use Timeshift for a regular timed backup and then I have BackInTime for my big backup, and then SpiderOak backing up off site every 15 min. I run my /home a little different than most, carrying only confg's and a small amount of data there. 99% of my data ( docs, pictures, everything else) is on a completely different drive, and I have links to get there . ( ie my ~/Documents ~/Pictures etc are all symlinks )
Yes, people say not to use Timeshift to 'backup' your data. And I believe the main reason is that a restore will drop you BACK to where you were when it last run. (ie you LOSE all data since that timeshift! ) ... So.. easy to do as long as you remember, if your going to restore using TImeShift you either a) make another TImeShift right before you restore, or you copy out your entire ~/ ... and replace anything 'new' since that TimeShift that you restored. ( obviously ... better to NOT do this - but I like the timed save, and I have SpiderOak too.)
For your xscreensaver, there is a ~/.xscreensaver that holds all config data, I would remove that and see if it resolves your black saver. (also - mine does that on occasion, but is always good the next round - but then I rarely shut my machines down, locking them each time i walk away. )

Timeshift only save difference between files on the same disk, if the disk dies you don't have anything left to recover -- thus "not a backup" it's however good if you want to recover previous versions of file in case of non-disk related problems.

Precisely. In my case, its really all abut the system and the config files

Tnx for the hints. Tell me your opinion about BackInTime(was discontinued or remember bad?) and SpiderOak
You have used rsync ? If yes what's your opinion?

I'm not sure what you mean can you translate it in steps(1. 2. 3. etc)?
I Notice that TS do automatically a snapshot point before do a snaphot IIRC.
Note: On btrfs do (or restore from) a (till now did only system's) snapshot are literally a snap, really impressive IMHO.I Have to be more accustomed with that awesome tool

Good strategy I will bare it in mind just in case because without do anything xscreensaver showed his colorful screens, maybe back screen is one of his screens?
I will observe it

@Adrian Thanks got it Timeshift behave like 'a hard link than can't go a out of a partition'

BackInTime is currently under production. (
https://github.com/bit-team/backintime )
While I really like SpiderOak... it has started to become bogged down and problematic on several clients machines (windows - but the service ) .. I am currently evaluating it on my machines, but starting to fall out of favor with it - which is to bad as I *really* like it.
Looking at borgBase and Vorta.
I have used rsync, and it works well.. but I am more GUI driven and rsync was failing to write to my NAS (synology ).
As I thought about that on TimeShift(TS). But that's not the behaviour of other backup tools too?
Yes, it is really. However, I typically restore to some other location when I use the other backup utils - but yes you are correct.

The safest way I have found to restore with timeshift is:
1) Make a new timeshift snapshot (saving current ) ( Call this one "snapshot of today" )
2) Restore previous timeshift ( call this one 'yesterdays')
3) after your all back up and good, then using fsearch and thunar pluck out of "snapshot of today" the files that are later than "yesterdays".
I Notice that TS do automatically a snapshot point before do a snaphot IIRC.
Note: On btrfs do (or restore from) a (till now did only system's) snapshot are literally a snap, really impressive IMHO.I Have to be more accustomed with that awesome tool
If your talking about MX snapshot, yes I agree. it is an awesome tool for keeping things rolling along. (I make one once a month minimum, or sooner if I feel the need ;-p )
