Hello friends,
My latest Live USB fails after the GRUB menu with a kernel panic. I have tried with the 6.6.11-1~mx23ahs kernel and the one before that (maybe it's 6.6.9?) , using 2 different USB sticks. So, 4 tests total with different kernels and different sticks. Snapshot maker and Live USB maker both finish successfully every time. The kernel panic message starts with " init: eval : line 1 : syntax error: unexpected "(" "
Thank you for letting me know if you know which latest update in snapshot or live usb maker is causing this issue. The last working Live USB was made about 2-3 weeks ago, with kernel 6.6.9 (the one before the latest 6.6.11), and I tried with both these kernels as mentioned before.

Interesting, cause there's a similar complaint here:

Hi. Yes, I searched the forum before posting and saw that. But I felt the direction of that thread didn't help my case.

Does the iso boot attached to a VM or with a fromiso-grub menu entry?
Or from LiveUSB made with dd-mode (not full-feature with MX Live USB Maker)?
( on CLI e.g. with: sudo dd-live-usb -f path-to-iso-file )

what compression was used to make the snapshot?
I've got snapshots that work, and several that don't, exhibiting the same kernel panic here in a virtualbox vm.

do the snapshots with the kernel panic have more than one kernel installed?
edit**tested, no difference.

I just took a reset accounts snapshot with LZ4 from my minimal ISO, no problems... @dolphin_oracle can you reliably reproduce the issue? maybe a specific compression algorithm or specific kernel?

so far the only snapshots I have that work are my systemd_only and sysVinit_only respin isos I updated the other day. I did those snapshots from live usb starting from the previous 23.1 isos.
I have tried 3 kernels and two compression schemes tonight.
default 6.1.0-17
liquorix 6.6.12
liquorix 6.7
all with lz4. all kernel panics. with the 6.7 I did zstd and lz4. with the 6.1 I've done reset snapshots and personal snapshots. all from an installed system.
I've taken my system down to just the 6.1 kernel at the moment. all bits of other kernels are removed.
my snapshots are fair size, about 6.7 GB. I have not had trouble booting them before.

I've gone back to 23.11.05 of snapshot. no change, still getting the kernel panics, so I'm leaning toward the problem being elsewhere.

if there is something on the iso to check or that might help, I can access them via isomount. I currently have 8 non-working isos, all with the same kernel panic. I even made one with gzip.
currently checking against making on iso from a running live-usb.

creating a snapshot from a running mx23.2 iso with 6.1 kernel and lz4 compression worked fine. produced a bootable iso.

the panic message may be different than what the OP reports. it does match that reported in this thread though.

actually once I got a UEFI boot I can see that the very first message cut off in the screenshot above does match the OP's report.
I'm currently uploading a snapshot iso that has the kernel panic issue.
notes: my failed snapshot is an ahs-enabled release. same for the OP and the other thread.
both are upgrades in place. The OP from our original ahs release iso and the other thread from MX-23.1_ahs.
My machine has 16 cores and makes the snaphot is about 1:07 minutes when using lz4 compression. I will post the QSI when I get home.

Tried to reproduce. Snapshot lz4-ISO from MX-23.2-ahs always boots both from LiveUSb and also booting from attached iso. Using latest snapshot and mx-live-usb-maker from MX-23.2

I'm getting the kernel panic, as well. Tried 3 different thumbdrives and 3 different snapshots.

The last working Live USB was made about 2-3 weeks ago, with kernel 6.6.9 (the one before the latest 6.6.11), and I tried with both these kernels as mentioned before.
how large is the snapshot iso?

Tried to reproduce. Snapshot lz4-ISO from MX-23.2-ahs always boots both from LiveUSb and also booting from attached iso. Using latest snapshot and mx-live-usb-maker from MX-23.2
yeah anything fresh I'm not failing on. or small.
I also just did a snapshot on a vm at work that has been upgraded from the original mx23 standard iso, and no problems there. that was a 3.9 GB iso, 6.1.0-17 kernel, and lz4 compression. and it booted up fine.

Writing when booted "fromiso" on my "just now" created 23.2 snapshot iso: All fine :)
Personal Snapshot
Nothing's excluded
Zstd
ro quiet nosplash
Liq. 6.7-1.1~bookworm directly from Liq.
P.S. Also my initrd.img is zstd as I had set it to be so, though this is probably irrelevant.

failed iso here:

sorry its so big, its the only one so far that I can reproduce.

there was a bug in the liquorix kernels some time back that dealt with zstd compression of the kernel modules. I've purged those off, but I wonder if installing those kernels had some left over effect. I forget the version. 6.6.10-3 maybe.

I can now reproduce problem a second way.
from 23.2 KDE iso.
install liquorix kernel via the metapackage entry in popular apps. (6.6.12).
reboot into new kernel.
run snapshot -> general reset.
kernel panic ensues.

The confusing part is:
Same kernel,
Same initrd image
Why no panic when booting the installed system ?
If it was something else we would understand and say "maybe squashfs or compression method" etc...
This may be even absurd but can someone try either nosplash or fbcon=nodefer as boot parameter?

I've never installed the liquorix kernel.

not the same initrd. the installed system uses the initramfs files, the live system does not.

I can replicate the issue. Clean install 01/21/24 MX-23.2 fluxbox.
Liquorix 6.7.1-1
zstd compression
Ventoy 1.0.95

there was a bug in the liquorix kernels some time back that dealt with zstd compression of the kernel modules. I've purged those off, but I wonder if installing those kernels had some left over effect. I forget the version. 6.6.10-3 maybe.
I've never installed the liquorix kernel.
Ok good, this is a good data point.
but you have installed multple kernels.
all of may failed snapshots either have or had have more than one kernel installed.

Maybe something related to the initrd_release file inserted into /etc/live_initrd with snapshot:
Code: Select all
NAME="MX"
VERSION="23.2_ahs (Libretto)
ID="mx"
VERSION_ID="23.2_"
PRETTY_NAME="MX 23.2_ahs (Libretto)"
ANSI_COLOR="0;34"
HOME_URL="https://mxlinux.org"
BUG_REPORT_URL="https://mxlinux.org"
BASE=MX
where the missing ["] double-quotes in the 2nd line
VERSION="23.2_ahs (Libretto)
breaks the live init.
The above is from the iso posted.

So for anybody does have the kernal panic issue:
Do check and fix the VERSION line in /etc/initrd_relase
and add missing double-quotes to the VERSION-line
before making the snapshot.
looks something like this, here for the MX-23.2 ahs installation:

Flashed my snapshot to another thumb drive with MX Live USB Maker and booted fine.
I do have two kernels on this system. linux-image-6.1.0-17-amd64 and linux-image-6.7.1-1-liquorix-amd64.
I see Ventoy has an update (1.0.97) and will upgrade to see if it fixes MY issue.

Maybe something related to the initrd_release file inserted into /etc/live_initrd with snapshot:
Code: Select all
NAME="MX"
VERSION="23.2_ahs (Libretto)
ID="mx"
VERSION_ID="23.2_"
PRETTY_NAME="MX 23.2_ahs (Libretto)"
ANSI_COLOR="0;34"
HOME_URL="https://mxlinux.org"
BUG_REPORT_URL="https://mxlinux.org"
BASE=MX
where the missing ["] double-quotes in the 2nd line
VERSION="23.2_ahs (Libretto)
breaks the live init.
The above is from the iso posted.
ah very good
@fehlix
my working snapshots have a single quote.
the non-working ones have a weird double quote instead of a missing one in the VERSION line.
Code: Select all
NAME="MX"
VERSION="23.2_KDE (Libretto)""
ID="mx"
VERSION_ID="23.2_"
PRETTY_NAME="MX 23.2_KDE (Libretto)"
ANSI_COLOR="0;34"
HOME_URL="https://mxlinux.org"
BUG_REPORT_URL="https://mxlinux.org"
BASE=MX
same for the /etc/initrd_release file in the main file system.

That may be the culprit cause till now (including the other thread by shmu26) all complaints were with KDE and AHS .

not that I'm one to not make a typo (

its in the generation of the file during the snapshot somewhere I think. the /etc/initrd_release on the system being snapshotted is correct.

Can't reproduce. It's here always a copy of /etc/inird_release within the live initrd.
That's, what snapshot is doing, just a copy.

and got now a kernel-panic-maker initrd_release:
by this changed line:

I think we found the root cause, no need for more info, just take a snapshot and report if you see any problem, but this should be fixed (if you updated mx-system).

My thanks too!
I made a snapshot on Tuesday. I tried to boot it and tried to make a live USB but it failed. I assumed that I made some change that broke snapshot.
I had some other things to do with family and got back here last night. Seeing this thread and then an mx-system update made my day and fixed my issues.
In addition to testing my backups, I now need to remember to not assume I broke it and test the theory.
