Here's a twist. :frustrated:

I can get it to work with the 6.6.9 liquorix kernel and UEFI.

Open MX Boot Options and on the kernel parameters line remove either splash or quiet. Having both of them creates the issue.

Works: splash
Works: quiet
Doesn't work: splash quiet

Re: liquourix 6.6.8 kernel, virtual consoles

#43 Post by siamhie »

Continuing with this tty error testing, I tried out 6 different kernels and found a common ground (I think). It does happen to be framebuffer related.

kernels.jpg

Here are the two kernels that work with UEFI machines.
Debian 6.6.8 (AHS) <----MXPI
Debian 6.6.9 (AHS) <----MXPI

Here are the four kernels that don't work with UEFI machines.
Liquorix 6.3.9-1 <----MXPI
Liquorix 6.4.15-2 <----MXPI
Liquorix 6.5.11-3 <----MXPI
Liquorix 6.6.9-1 <----directly from the Liquorix repo

While looking at each of the config files in the headers folder for each kernel (/usr/src) I noticed this section seems to be different between Debian's kernels and Liquorix's kernels.

Debian:

Code: Select all

#
# Console display driver support
#
CONFIG_VGA_CONSOLE=y
CONFIG_DUMMY_CONSOLE=y
CONFIG_DUMMY_CONSOLE_COLUMNS=80
CONFIG_DUMMY_CONSOLE_ROWS=25
CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE=y
# CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE_LEGACY_ACCELERATION is not set
CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE_DETECT_PRIMARY=y
CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE_ROTATION=y
# CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE_DEFERRED_TAKEOVER is not set
# end of Console display driver support
Liquorix:

Code: Select all

#
# Console display driver support
#
CONFIG_VGA_CONSOLE=y
CONFIG_DUMMY_CONSOLE=y
CONFIG_DUMMY_CONSOLE_COLUMNS=80
CONFIG_DUMMY_CONSOLE_ROWS=25
CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE=y
# CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE_LEGACY_ACCELERATION is not set
CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE_DETECT_PRIMARY=y
CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE_ROTATION=y
CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE_DEFERRED_TAKEOVER=y
# end of Console display driver support

Seems Debian comments out "CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE_DEFERRED_TAKEOVER" and Liquorix doesn't.

@siamhie THIS might explain why I had so much trouble with the plymouth animation being wonky when I was setting it up! We came to the conclusion it was frame buffering, and I got around it, but there was flat out something odd at play and I was testing on regular / liquorix and different versions.

Excellent work at tracking that! Seriously nice!

@CharlesV Did you happen to test it on a UEFI machine with MX-21? Seems 21 uses plymouth version 0.9.5-3 whereas 23 uses version 22.02.122-3, so I wonder if the liquorix kernels also have this framebuffer issue with 0.9.5-3 plymouth.

I do have a sata ssd laying around that I could add to my system and test with.

Yes, I use mx21 on my main rigs and this was where I created the plymouth animation. When I tested it on mx23 it got all weird on me - that was the beginning of the weirdness (mx23). I was rock solid on mx21, but I was also not up in the 6.x kernels either - I was in 5.14?

This issue of the virtual consoles DOES happen as I explained in post #9 mx21 and 6.6.7 liquorix ( UEFI ) , as well as 6.6.8 as I am on now.

Though it says "do not manually edit", does it change if you comment out that line (then reboot) ?

Hi,

Secondary question: Could this issue affect Remasters/ISO builds in some way?

Before the holidays I built a Test ISO with Liquorix 6.6.6 (not with Snapshot, with build-iso-mx) everything worked as expected... Liquorix 6.6.6 has been removed from the AHS Repo so this morning I built a test ISO with Liquorix 6.6.9 and it would not load the DE (Enlightenment). The mouse pointer appeared and turned into a cursor and that was that. I was able to get into X with a Ctrl-Alt-F2 and 'startx' but something has changed since 6.6.6... :confused:

I'm booting with: AVL_MXE_LIVE_BOOT_OPTIONS="quiet threadirqs nosplash"

*EDIT I will retry with 'quiet' removed..

I guess yes , but at least we know that nosplash cures it :)

Edit: Ah, that one looks like a bit different. This issue was only about/when switching ttys ...

But I'm booting with nosplash... Maybe I have a different problem...
