I'd use Tim's instructions from this post earlier in this topic

It's possible that the rtl8821au-dmks package in Main is too old to build the drivers on your kernel.
Use the MX Repo Manager -> Individual Sources (tab) to enable the MX ahs repository, Then open a terminal and run

sudo apt update
sudo apt install rtl8821au-dkms

to install the newest version of that driver.
If any error messages appear during the building of the driver, please copy & paste the output here.

Afterwards, before doing a regular update, go back into MX Repo Manager and disable the ahs repo - otherwise you'll get an upgrade of your entire graphics stack, which would probably be OK but which on your 12+ year old year old hardware is as likely to work less well as it is better.

CB et all - Wow - once again, saved by the experts - many thanks - speed has gone from 20 mbs to 100 mbs - is there a way to avoid this situation with future installs ?

So glad to hear it's ok now. You can take a snapshot when everything's fine (and use that as a live usb when needed or even install). Also I guess MX Team will update the one in regular repo to this version from ahs :)

Yes, currently the latest version in regular MX repo is the one that didn't work (and for MX-21) :
