Steam not working / Uploads not working

Hey folks,

New Linux (and, obviously, MX-18) user here.
So, first off, this is the first distro where I felt that it was legitimately good enough to give ol' windows the boot. (With other distro's there was just always "something" missing.)

In any case, to the meat of the issue:

So I installed Steam without any issues. It worked perfectly.
I wanted to install VMware to load Elementary OS into it -with more than 256MB video ram, which is why I opted for VMware instead of VB.

After I finally got it installed and working, steam stopped working. It always came back basically with "Check your internet connection".
I did a speedtest and the upload is screwed. I thought it may be an ISP issue, so I used a different provider...with the same result.
I thought it may be VMware messing with the connections, so I completely removed it. Did the speed test...still kicks out an error when it tries to upload.

I still have Windows 10 installed so I booted into it, loaded up steam with zero issues and did a speed test -also with zero issues. (So we can safely conclude that it's definitely not a connection issue.)

I booted back into MX-18 and the "steam and speed test" issue persist.

I had Gufw Firewall enabled, I made rules for steam, I disabled it, removed it, reinstalled it, etc, etc...the issue persists.

I also have to add that I have TeamViewer installed, which takes forever to connect -so I'm assuming that also has to do with this "upload" issue.

So!
Does anyone have any idea what I'm dealing with here? Any suggestions? If you need more information on what's installed or anything like that, please let me know and I'll provide whatever I can.

I really, really want this to work.
I don't want to go back to Windows...so...someone, please help a noob out! :crossfingers:

(Thanking you in advance)

Please place the results of MX Tools- Quick System Info here to help people understand what your platform looks like.

I seriously doubt if there's a big of people here using VMware. Why pray tell does elementary need such a monstrous amount of video mem? (Never mind the requirement just seems weird.)

This is probably not the answer. But might solve someone else with almost the same symptoms...

I’ve had the house router that connects to the Internet have the same symptoms. Downloads fine, uploads zip. The router needed a BIOS update and then everything went back to normal.

Apologies for not replying sooner! (I thought I'd be notified when I got a reply, but apparently not. My mistake.)
(WRT E-OS and video ram...I don't know why I need more, haha! 1GB of video ram just seems "right" -I'm obviously making up excuses, because I really don't have a reason :happy: )

I think you get post notifications if you "subscribe" to the post, otherwise you don't get it by default. Or it might be a setting in your profile that you need to tick (not sure I don't need that).

As for the issue, I want to understand something, if you boot MX live, the original release do you have the same problem? So the question becomes, is this a "MX" problem or it's a setting that was screwed up somehow later on?

Thanks for the tip.

I'll boot into MX live and give it a shot -assuming that I can install steam when live.

I would see if you have the network issues while running live also because that may be root of the steam issue. If the network issues are not there while running live then I'm guessing it may have something to do with your firewall rules you created. By the way, what were they?

Alrighty!
So I booted into the live USB, installed Steam and..."Steam could not connect, etc, etc, etc...."

Booted into Win 10 and...steam starts up as it should :frown:

I added the "Allow Steam both ways" in the firewall and after that didn't work, I just disabled it completely. (For the time being, at least.)
I don't have any physical network issues -as in faulty hardware- because everything else works just fine (here in MX, as well as Win 10).

do you have a previously existing ~/.local/share/Steam folder? I'm thinking that maybe its looking for a network connection that is not longer present.

Hmm, I just checked and there is no ~/.local/share/Steam

EDIT: There is a ~/.steam folder, though. But I deleted it every time I did a new installation -as per some instructions I found online. (That was about the extent of
my manually deleting steam stuff.)

Off-topic, but you don't need those two Waterfox repos, since we have it in our own repo and it's installable in the MX Package Installer.

You have a Realtek 8111h ethernet chipset. Realtek suggests using the non-free r8168 driver for that chipset instead of the open source r8169 driver present in the kernel.

To build the r8168 driver, install the r8168-dkms package. This package builds the non-free driver and disables the one you are now using.
I would use

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get r8168-dkms
because you will see the messages as the driver auto-builds. It should work - but I haven't tried it with the newer kernels, and if the messages show that it failed you will want to

Code: Select all

dpkg -P 8168-dkms
before you reboot, lest you be left with no network driver at all.

Update 21:03
The r8168-dkms version 8.043.02 in debian stretch will not build with kernel 4.19. I have backported the buster version for the MX repo. I tested it with the same kernel version you have and it does build a working driver. Since I didn't have your particular problem I can't guarantee it will solve it but it does function normally on my similar realtek 8111 chipset.

Check to make sure your mirror has r8168-dkms version 8.046.00-1~mx17 before trying to install the package.

Ok, so I copied and pasted: sudo apt-get r8168-dkms
and I got: E: Invalid operation r8168-dkms

I thought this meant that the mirror didn't have "r8168-dkms".
So I changed to the London, UK mirror -in MX Repo Manager.
Did the "update" (and "upgrade").
After pasting in the command again, I still got the same "E: Invalid operation r8168-dkms"

I decided to try: sudo apt install r8168-dkms
That seemed to successfully install something.
I tried Steam after that, but still got the same "Could not connect...." error.

In the update of your post, you mentioned to make sure that the mirror has "r8168-dkms version 8.046.00-1~mx17"
I mistakenly did not do this...how can check this?

In the meantime, I'm going to reboot the system and try Steam again.

Ok, rebooted and still no success with Steam.

I scratched around online and did:

$ apt-cache policy r8168-dkms
r8168-dkms:
Installed: 8.046.00-1~mx17
Candidate: 8.046.00-1~mx17
Version table:
*** 8.046.00-1~mx17 500
500 http://mxlinux.mirrors.uk2.net/packages/mx/repo stretch/non-free amd64 Packages
500 http://mxlinux.mirrors.uk2.net/packages/mx/repo stretch/non-free i386 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
8.043.02-1 500
500 http://ftp.br.debian.org/debian stretch/non-free amd64 Packages
500 http://ftp.br.debian.org/debian stretch/non-free i386 Packages

According to that, I assume that I have the correct package version.

Let's check a setting that has caused users some problems in the past.
Right Click on the network manager icon in the panel.
Select Edit Connections...
Select Wired connection 1 and press Edit
Select the General tab.
Two checkboxes should be checked
Automatically connect to this network when it is available
and
All users may connect to this network

The latter box being unchecked has been a problem before.

If it is checked, run an online speedtest like Ookla's to see if it's actually a problem with network speed or something specific to Steam.

Have you run an online speedtest (like speedsmart.net or speedtest.net) to see if it's a general problem rather than something Steam related?

No, sir!
I did not.
I completely missed that.

And so I went ahead and did it...and this is what I got:

"Upload Test Error
A socket error occurred during the upload test. A firewall could be blocking the connection or the server might be having some issues.
Please try again later."

AHA! So it seems to be a socket issue!

I don't have the firewall enabled at all -at the moment.
So I guess the next bunch of questions are:
Which socket is it;
Why is it blocking steam / speedtest.net from uploading and;
How did it get to be blocked?

Interesting....

might be time to check the /etc/hosts file and see if you've got any blocking entries.

or maybe do you have a vpn?

Let's see

and for good measure

Code: Select all

sudo iptables -L

No, I'm not using a VPN
(Does using the VPN function on Opera count? Keeping in mind that I use Chromium for general browsing.)

I opened the hosts file and it had, a staggering, 1138 pages.
Is that normal?

if you are using an add blockier that might be normal. but mine is nearly empty.

Code: Select all

┌─[dolphin@mx]─[05:32:00 pm]─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────[~]
└─> cat /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1	localhost

fe00::0		ip6-localnet
ff00::0		ip6-mcastprefix
ff02::1		ip6-allnodes
ff02::2		ip6-allrouters

might be worth pursuing.

Definitely.
Mine looks the same:

127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.0.1 MX-18

# The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts
::1 localhost ip6-localhost ip6-loopback
fe00::0 ip6-localnet

ff02::1 ip6-allnodes
ff02::2 ip6-allrouters

# antiX-advert-blocker IPs below:

After "IPs below:" It's then followed by 1138 pages "127.0.0.1" followed by a URL.

I'm going to guess that that's the problem.

I really don't know what to do, other than perhaps completely removing "antiiX-advert-blocker"...and then reinstalling it.
I definitely did mess around with that when I was exploring the OS, hoping to get rid of any ad blocker extensions / add-on's in the browser.

(Sigh...I'm such a noob, but I have to ask these questions, else I'll never learn.)

I'm going to give the uninstall / reinstall option a go and will post an update.

Update:

Alright, so I uninstalled the antiX-advert-blocker.
Tried Steam and got the same "cannot connect" error.

I also noticed "advert-block" when I searched for "advert" in the menu.
There is no icon next to it and nothing happens when I click on it.
I can't remember if I installed that or not -I obviously must have if it doesn't come installed by default.
Anyway, so I removed that as well, although it still appears in the menu.

BTW, I tried to purge the above mentioned apps -after I did the uninstall- and it came back saying the apps can't be found.
This must mean I must've successfully uninstalled everything.

I can'f find anything else ad-block related.

After you removed the ad blocker did you check to make sure the entries were removed from the hosts file?

No, I didn't.
I didn't know I had to delete those.

Do I just open it up and delete everything in it?
Or just everything with the exception of what you have in your example?

Ok!
I did that and then speedtest worked!

So I opened Steam...but still the same "could not connect" error.
I rebooted and tried again...no success.

Dang it.
I thought this would be it.

Ok, let me just mention that I see 7 "host" files:

host.conf
hostname
hosts
hosts.allow
hosts.deny
hosts.ORIGINAL
hosts.saved

Is this what I'm supposed to see?
Are the "hosts.allow" and "hosts.deny" supposed to be there?

AFAIK, yes.
In the /etc/ directory,
hostname = Contains the hostname of your system
hosts = The hosts file
hosts.allow and hosts.deny are there by default.
hosts.ORIGINAL and hosts.saved are added by antiX-advert-blocker , just as backups of your /etc/hosts file.

I joined this forum only a few days back, that is why I could answer only now. I am very interested in adblocking (especially the hosts file).
