I think I found the resolution thing. Went to lightdm.conf to see where its info is coming from, and found that it's /usr/share/dispsetup.sh. I believe that must have been set by the RPi version of arandr, and it does specify the resolution.

Please try commenting out that line 120 in lightdm.conf and see if it helps resolve the problem. Or maybe we have to substitute another source...

EDIT: just saw that old guy mentioned that file too

indeed, that file is present on the b2 but empty.

OK, new patch. Did DO's cleaning, commented out the line in lightdm.conf but left the file it pointed to (will remember to empty for Final), removed /home/pi/.config/autostart/lxrandr-autostart.desktop, removed the splash additions to /boot (though left one that gives me, at least so far, a completely black boot up screen):

Command to apply in folder where both downloaded patch and B2 image are located:

xdelta3 -d -s MXFBPi_B2.img RC.patch MXFBPi_RC2.img

It still booted to wrong res here.

in addition to what jerry said, please post the /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf file that is on RC2

Booted OK 2 different monitors
1680 x 1050
1920 x 1080
