My son was updating his laptop, the updates killed it.
I booted it with my latest Live USB, checked for updates, it wanted to remove lots !
Recorded the following on my wifes Laptop, check the video link below.

@dolphin_oracle @Eadwine Rose @anticapitalista
Just keying in a few in case and the Antix crew just in case they are affected. This is URGENT
EDIT
Sorry for the low volume in the recording. My wife's running Xfce but with KDE Elements. Had she updated, she would have lost the ability to use her Laptop. I just had to get this out there.

I cannot do anything repo wise.
I have seen Wayland come by as problematic, but as far as I know that upgrade has been removed already.
@timkb4cq is the repo man, I think..
Mind.. automatically say yes.. untick that. And I have broken my system once with that no longer needed can be removed nonsense, long ago. I say nonsense because there is stuff in there you DO need, you don't want that to remove.

I just did a test install of 23.6 AHS, and updated. There are huge numbers of updates including removals. After accepting them, a reboot left me with just a console login. Logging in and trying startx did not succeed, so this is a confirmed issue.
(UK repo.)

It would really really help if we knew what was the proposed update instead of what was to be removed from it. Wayland in KDE would still let you get to the login and then to a KDE X11 session. I have the newer anyway, but I don't use Wayland sessions in KDE. XFCE should be immune.
Anyway, I don't see any updates here. Maybe it's a corrupted mirror or something.

You can see the updates in Mike's video.
My test was with Xfce.
Mike is on a different continent to me, so reasonable to assume a different mirror.

Sorry, the video I see ends before he scrolls to the bottom where the updates are shown, so all I see are the autoremoves. That's why I'm asking for help, since it's not affecting me.

FWIW, there are no updates available via the SLC repo this a.m. ( I only use XFCE)

Are you using AHS? The standard Xfce version is not affected.

I can confirm this happens here in Finland when using the Umeå mirror in Sweden.

FWIW, there are no updates available via the SLC repo this a.m. ( I only use XFCE)
Are you using AHS? The standard Xfce version is not affected.
Chris
Yes.

Edited to add that I don't auto-update the kernel.

I let the updater roll through the procedure and it does indeed bork the system of the default AHS ISO currently. Reinstalling xorg from a TTY allowed me to manually run lightdm again, and get back a desktop session. There's of course a bunch of stuff missing, but at least it was just one install away to successfully go into a graphical session.

I've just tested with a fresh AHS install, and the repos set to SLC, and get the same problem on reboot.

Also, just mentioning: the dependencies of at least libegl-mesa0 are broken. When trying to update libegl-mesa0, both on a fresh system straight from the AHS ISO and on an up to date AHS sytem (per this month), you get:
Code: Select all
libegl-mesa0 : Depends: libwayland-client0 (>= 1.23.0) but 1.21.0-1 is to be installed
and it fails there.
Edit: yeah it's the mesa stuff. Try to install just libgl1-mesa-dri on a fresh AHS system. That borks it. Using the Umeå mirror I mentioned earlier for these over here.

MX-23 XFCE ahs based extrox has broken by recentry updates. (XCE+Compiz)
Press emerald window's close button, compiz suddenly stops.
My two extrox machines are same state.

@Stevo @timkb4cq so we either need to pull the mesa update or selectively add the libwayland-client0 back in. I think.
people that updated before we pulled the wayland packages won't be affected.

A couple days before the mesa update in our ahs repos I upgraded mesa from backports (the 25.0.4-1~bpo12+1 version).
The upgrade from backports didn't require any wayland upgrades.

yeah backports may have built it a little differently. looks like it still has a depend on the earlier version of libwayland-client0 (1.21)

I having seen any errors on a number of machines, I think I was luck and didn't catch things in between upgrades, I tried now with a clean install in a VM and updated everything OK.

can you post the apt-history from that update? I'm presuming the KDE iso?

Yeah it's specifically the AHS release using Xfce that uninstalls the whole xorg (among other things) if hitting this update.

There is something more going on here though. I updated last night approx 945 pst and I noticed some oddities, but it didnt take my machine down. ( xfce, using ahs repo's )

Just keying in a few in case and the Antix crew just in case they are affected. This is URGENT
EDIT
Sorry for the low volume in the recording. My wife's running Xfce but with KDE Elements. Had she updated, she would have lost the ability to use her Laptop. I just had to get this out there.
Just to point out that antiX is not affected.

Maybe if you're using nala as a frontend to apt or as a backend to MX updater, it will not nuke your system, since autoremove is disabled on it.
Anyway, I'm rebuilding Mesa without the newer wayland, just the newer wayland-protocols, which I hope will duplicate backports.

There is something more going on here though. I updated last night approx 945 pst and I noticed some oddities, but it didnt take my machine down.
Maybe this, also:

people that updated before we pulled the wayland packages won't be affected.
Don't know when exactly they were pulled, though.

They were pulled because they broke the KDE Wayland sessions--not a factor for XFCE. I use KDE X11 sessions, so I just kept the newer Wayland until just now, when I installed the new rebuilt Mesa I just redid, and then used aptitude to downgrade wayland to the bookworm version.

The rebuild is uploaded for Tim, hopefully for ahs-staging so we can test it first. Those that have a local-apt-repository can install these debs from it to test:

For temporary mitigation, libwayland-client0 has been restored to ahs.
Stevo's new Mesa build has been uploaded to ahs-staging so it can be tested.

After upgrading Mesa, libwayland-client0 should be downgraded to Bookworm's 1.21.0-1, if it doesn't get done automatically, by specifying the version in aptitude or apt to reinstall. I actually just used aptitude to install libwayland-dev and let it downgrade the rest of wayland to do so. Please test!

With the fixed mesa upgrade installed, I can downgrade the wayland packages back to the bookworm version without anything else being removed.
Code: Select all
kent@mx:~
$ apt install libwayland-cursor0/stable libwayland-egl1/stable libwayland-server0/stable libwayland-dev/stable -s
NOTE: This is only a simulation!
apt needs root privileges for real execution.
Keep also in mind that locking is deactivated,
so don't depend on the relevance to the real current situation!

Tested here too. Fixed mesa update goes fine. Moving to AHS and removing the libwayland-client0 debs that are no longer needed for mitigation.

Thank you all! For people who borked their systems (but still get a terminal) what's the best way to get the critical stuff back without reinstalling?
I tried on my test machine but was unsuccessful. Booted with a Live USB, mounted the root fs, located the apt.log and saved it to the Live-usb-storage folder. After removing all the fluff, I strung it all together into a single apt install command, unmountes the root fs, then used chroot rescue scan to gain access to the borked system, ran apt-update then pasted in the rather long apt command and let it rip, too many files were manually installed and not available for it to be a success and on rebooting into the ssd install, it arrived at a terminal login, followed by endless messages saying could not access <live-usb-name>.
I don't think it would have worked if I simply did a similar thing with a standard terminal login due to the manually installed content that comes through the build scripts.
EDIT
The machine I tested on was loaded with a snapshot-general (for redistribution, as in no user data) which I made in May this year as a backup for her. The type is AHS Xfce with elements she likes from KDE, such as Dolphin and Okular and I had some others in there for good measure.

OK. I copied this string into a Featherpad .txt file on the Live MX USB stick.
Then I booted the Toughpad.
Then mounted the ssd, opened a terminal, and ran it. This was the output:

Did you run a "sudo apt update" first?

In a terminally broken system (pun intended), it might be necessary to have an active wired LAN connection up and running before doing any of this, then test it with
followed by Adrians recommendation above when the connection is confirmed.

Sometimes a "dhclient" is enough to get an IP address, but it depends on specifics.

Thanks for the warning but I already updated before I saw this. It removes most of the GUI and quite a few very useful files. Luckily I had a Timeshift file from about 4 hours before the update and was able to restore everything fairly easily from a Live USB and the Timeshift file.
It looks like the update has been fixed now.

Some of those package were in the things that were removed and should have been reinstalled with the previous command. I dont believe it can hurt to try though .

A bit nervous...Has this issue been fixed?
Got a message on my KDE install that there are 9 updates, all of which are listed in the previously-posted list of problematic updates. Well, not exactly; you'll see the minor, but I'm hoping, critical, difference:
Code: Select all
libegl-mesa0
libgbm1
libgl1-mesa-dri
libglx-mesa0
libxatracker2
mesa-libgallium

mesa-vdpau-drivers
mesa-vulkan-drivers
They all show the proposed upgrade as:
25.0.4-1~mx23ahs -> 25.0.4-1~mx23ahs+1
The previous post showing the proposed updates were to upgrade to:
Now, my updater in KDE (Discover) says it wants to upgrade to:
Can I assume that I am safe to upgrade?

A bit nervous...Has this issue been fixed?
Got a message on my KDE install that there are 9 updates, all of which are listed in the previously-posted list of problematic updates. Well, not exactly; you'll see the minor, but I'm hoping, critical, difference:
Code: Select all
libegl-mesa0
libgbm1
libgl1-mesa-dri
libglx-mesa0
libxatracker2
mesa-libgallium
mesa-va-drivers
mesa-vdpau-drivers
mesa-vulkan-drivers
They all show the proposed upgrade as:
25.0.4-1~mx23ahs -> 25.0.4-1~mx23ahs+1
The previous post showing the proposed updates were to upgrade to:
Now, my updater in KDE (Discover) says it wants to upgrade to:
Can I assume that I am safe to upgrade?
And, yes, @CharlesV, I DO HAVE a Timeshift Snapshot (I do weekly). I also have an MX-Snapshot from "...The 4th of July !!!..." (Sung to the tune of "Yankee Doodle Dandy").

Thread marked as solved, a good team effort. I selected Timb4cqs post because I had to choose one that best reflected that things were OK now.

I know I sound like a broken record when say that a timeshift can save you from problems... but as we just saw... "things happen" :-)

Also, give it a lot of thought when an upgrade wants to remove a load of packages, and asks your permission to do so.
Just sayin'.
I don't know if Discover shows the terminal output, though.

Yeah, No, I have never seen Discover (KDE) show me the terminal output, nor the result of accepting the update, i.e., removing 'everything'...
Maybe there's a way to have Discover show me the results of updating...
Anyway...Yeah, good advice.
